Kravis Center Arts Integration Lesson Plan Grade Level: Kindergarten - Second Grade Lesson: Where Should Turtle Be? by Linda Tylka ESE and ESOL Strategies-Modeling Goal of Lesson: Students will learn about four different types of Florida turtles. Content Addressed: LA.K.2.1.5., LA.K.2.2.2, SC.1.L14.1, SC.2.L.17.2 Arts Objective Addressed: VA.K.S.1.1., VA. K.S.1.2, VA.1.S.1.2, VA.2.S.1.1. Essential Question: I can recognize different types of turtles and make one out of clay. Materials: Clay, tempera paint, paper, pencils Lesson Strategies (Procedure): 1. The teacher will read Where Should Turtle Be? to the class. 2. The teacher will discuss the different types of turtles and their environments. 3. The students will choose which turtle (box, painted, sea turtle or terrapin) to create from the clay. 4. The teacher will model how to make a turtle from a small pinch pot. 5. The teacher will model how to pull out the legs of the turtles. 6. The teacher will fire clay projects. 7. The students will paint the clay turtle to represent either a box turtle, painted turtle, terrapin or a sea turtle. 8. Follow up activity: The students will paint an environment for their turtle (salt marsh, pond, wetland, slow moving river, woods or ocean) Assessment Strategies: The students will be informally assessed by how well their turtle represents one of the four turtles studied.
