Notes from Leslie... The temperature was a bit like fall the morning I was writing this newsletter, but I hope that summer isn’t going to leave us quite yet. It has been nice to have the windows open in August to get some fresh air through the house, when we are normally running the air conditioner to stay cool. There were eighty-four members at the August showing of “Unbroken”, a remarkable true story about resilience and redemption. Louis Zamperini, a 1936 Olympian, survived 47 days in a life raft after September 2015 his plane was shot down in WWII. He was captured by the Japanese ISSUE #324 MEMBER FDIC and endured extreme torture in their prisoner-of-war camps until the war ended. Lorna Wehrmann and Loren Garst helped draw the prize winning numbers. The $2 prizes were won by Judy Jacobs, Betty Lines, Pat Hunsche, Evelyn Long, JoAnn Lantz, Kenneth Bagby, Patricia Bentsen, Bill Langley, Jim Jorgensen and Carol Kahler. Leroy Lorsch won the morning $Moneybags$ drawing of $10, but there was no winner in the afternoon. Congratulations to all winners! Your next movie day will be Wednesday, September 9th with movie times at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Blair 3 Theatres. Our Alaska trip in July was full of so many wonderful adventures and memories that I ended up with over 1700 pictures on my camera! Obviously I had to narrow that down quite a bit and have selected a few to share with you in this newsletter. I know they would be much better in color, but you will have to use your imagination. We returned from our Chicago tour on the 20th and I will have to say we did have more excitement that wasn’t on our itinerary! The weather was very turbulent on Tuesday evening with some of the nastiest lightning I have experienced. We were caught in the middle of a tornado warning that night, which thankfully turned out to be a non-event other than the thunder, lightning and hard rains! We were fortunate that the bad weather occurred at night and didn’t interfere with our daily touring. We had a beautiful, clear day on Wednesday to view all of Chicago from the Willis (former Sears) Tower which was quite exhilarating. After a lot of encouragement, I did step onto the ledge long enough to get my picture taken but I didn’t waste any time getting off so others could take my place! We had some wonderful musical entertainment provided by three young gentlemen during dinner on our last evening. It literally brought everyone to their feet and a few brave souls showed off their dancing skills. There was plenty of energy in that dining room! Since the weather had calmed down we didn’t expect much more excitement, but on our last morning the fire alarm went off at the hotel as we were having breakfast and continued to sound until the firemen arrived to check things out and turn it off. I think everyone was anxious to get on the bus and head for home after that! All things considered, we really did have an enjoyable time. I will include a few pictures in the next newsletter of some sights we had the pleasure of visiting. CANCELLATION NOTICE: Unfortunately, the Northeast Nebraska Adventure that was scheduled for September 23rd has been canceled due to lack of interest. My apologies to those of you that were signed up for this one-day tour, but there were only 11 people that made reservations. LAST MINUTE ONE-DAY EVENT ADDED!! We will be going to The Lofte Community Theatre on Sunday, December 6th for some holiday entertainment. The Lofte Community Theatre, near Manley, Nebraska, has comfortable seating for 380 people and provides over 40 performances to more than 11,000 audience members each year. We will enjoy a hearty lunch prior to a 2:00 p.m. performance of “Dear Santa.” “Dear Santa” is composed of a number of short scenes that tackle the many mysteries about Santa. Different children share their view of Jolly St. Nick including the child who alphabetizes her wish list and mailed it to the North Pole in August. Santa and his helpers shed light on his many secrets and explain how his power transcends the boundaries of race, gender and religion. In the end, we find that it is the faith of many that sustains the magic of Santa Claus. The cost of $60 per person will include roundtrip transportation, lunch, admission ticket and all tips/gratuities. Seating will be limited to the first 35 members, so please call me at 402-533-0103 if you want to get more information or make a reservation. Don’t miss an opportunity to share this holiday experience with your Heritage Club friends! I am doing additional research on more trips and events for 2016, hoping to have some ideas to share with you very soon. Stay tuned for more information!
