Parts of the Sentence Direct Object • A direct object is a noun or object pronoun (me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them) that receives the action of the action verb. subj predicate Mary yells at Sally. Mary Sally (direct object) Indirect Object • An indirect object is a noun or object pronoun (me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them) located between the action verb and the direct object. The structure is: S-AV-IO-DO. S subj You AV IO DO predicate indirect object direct object me nothing. gave Subject Complement • A subject complement is a noun, subject pronoun, or adjective that complements the subject: it is linked to the subject by a linking verb. Subject Complement (cont.) • The subject complement, in a sense, renames the subject. It completes our knowledge of the subject. Example: She subj. is brilliant. predicate linking verb subject complement * To compliment someone is to praise him or her; to complement something is to complete it, as a subject complement completes the subject. Predicate Nominative • A predicate nominative is a subject complement that is a noun or subject pronoun. Example: It was she and I who came to visit. Predicate Adjective • Predicate adjective is a term sometimes used to describe a subject complement made out of an adjective. Example: I am sleepy. The Logic of Sentence Analysis • First find the subject/predicate set. – Is the verb ACTION or LINKING? • If the verb is ACTION, then – do not look for a subject compliment – look for a direct object – if you find a direct object then look for an indirect object. • If the verb is LINKING, then – do not look for the direct object – look for a subject complement • Look for the next subject/predicate set and repeat.
