Ellison Park MESA/STEM Science Club 2014-2015 Disclosure Presenting Ellison Park’s first ever MESA/STEM after school science club. The science club is offered to 5th and 6th grade students who love to explore science. What does MESA stand for? MESA/Math Engineering Science Achievement What does STEM stand for? STEM /Science, Technology, Engineering, Math What is the MESA/STEM Science Club? The MESA/STEM Science Club is an after school academic activity for students interested in learning and experimenting with science, math, technology and engineering. The purpose of the club is to learn about science/math/technology/engineering and create a link towards these subjects and the types of careers and professions in the actual workplace. The MESA/STEM Science Club will be taught by Mrs. Olsen. The science club will be limited to 5th and 6th grade students. The club will consist of 25-30 members selected by the following criteria: classroom recommendations, behavior and math/science grades and assessments. Club Meeting Times and Dates: The MESA/STEM Science Club will be held 2-3 times a month on Thursdays after school from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Mrs. Olsen’s portable (located on the south end of the school playground). Parents/guardians are responsible for students getting home after science club is dismissed; NO school transportation is provided. The club will run from December through April. Club dates and schedule are as follows. MESA/STEM modules to be implemented are: Rocket module, Matter module, Space module and Mechanical Engineering module dealing with catapults, etc. Family Science Night: A family science activity will be held on one of the dates previously identified (see above dates). Science Club Rules: 1. Club members will show respect to Mrs. Olsen, other instructors/volunteers, guest presenters, fellow club members and school property. 2. Club members will listen to directions, have appropriate behavior and participate in club meetings. 3. Club members will be on time, attend regularly and be ready at the front of the school for parent pick-up to go home the conclusion of the club meeting/activity. 4. Club members will follow instructions and try their best. 5. Club members will have fun learning and experimenting with math/science. 6. Students not following the rules, i.e. being disrespectful to others and school property; having more than two absences; having excessive tardies; and/or accumulating more than 2 behavior warnings may be dismissed from participating in the club.
