April 15, 2016 Spring Island - Go2Guide Owner’s Manual Travel Guide for One-Tank Trips WE-Source List BY and FOR the People 1 April 15, 2016 Welcome to the Spring Island GO2GUIDE, which replaces the former Spring Island Member Resource Guide. Over the years, generous members have collaborated to create and maintain lists of their preferred suppliers, contractors, restaurants, resources and recommendations. With the influx of so many wonderful new members and burgeoning options in our area, it seemed timely and appropriate to give the primer book a much-needed update, new look and convenient online access at the Spring Island Member Website (www.springisland.com). Our goal with this material is to provide a fluid, “living document” that will continually reflect the recommendations of Spring Islanders. Therefore, member input is invited and encouraged! Every attempt was made to include most common areas of information and/or interest, but this by no means will ever be “final”! Maintenance of the GO2GUIDE will be managed by our Front Office Manager, Jennifer Elshoff. Additional recommendations and/or any new categories can be forwarded to her attention at [email protected] or by calling 843-9872044. It is important to note that recommendations/inclusions in this guide are NOT an endorsement of the Spring Island Club, Property Owners Association or the Spring Island Trust. In the case of contractors, we encourage members to please exercise due diligence and verify all necessary current licensing and insurance documents prior to hiring. As always, multiple quotes are suggested, too. The GO2GUIDE is available in .pdf format and can be accessed by clicking the website link. Please be a friend of the environment and print only what you need. It goes without saying that the GO2GUIDE would not be possible without the numerous and generous contributions of our Spring Island members and neighbors. Our sincerest gratitude to each and every person who generously shared their time and resources at every point in time. Finally, if you need to locate information that you’re not currently finding within, we encourage you to ask your friends and neighbors, who remain the best collective resource of all. Then, by all means, share it! After all, that’s what got us here in the first place! 2 April 15, 2016 Table of Contents I. II. III. IV. V. VI. Off-Island Conveniences A. Grocery Stores B. Off-Island Explorations & One-Tank Trips We all agree – there is nothing that compares to Spring Island. The “pristine and private”, idyllic setting truly sets the high-water standard. However, it’s been said that “Members cannot live on Spring Island alone”. When it’s time to venture beyond the causeway to explore the hinterlands, here are some suggestions to plug into that Navigation System: A. Beaufort – approximately 19 miles/30 minutes Beaufort is a charming and welcoming town with picturesque landscapes of live oaks, salt water marshes, creeks, rivers and deep harbors which serve as a back drop for many antebellum homes and historic buildings. Its rich history invites you to slow down and step back in time while still enjoying the conveniences of today. Beaufort County encompasses Port Royal and 200 Sea Islands (including Lady’s Island, Parris Island, Harbor Island, St. Helena Island, Hunting Island and Fripp Island, among others) and is located just 70 Miles south of Charleston and 42 miles north of Savannah. As you will see, there are many ways to explore and enjoy Beaufort. You won’t be disappointed! Brief History The Spanish explorer Pedro de Salza was first to visit Port Royal in 1514, and it was visited again in 1520 by Francisco Cordillo. In 1562, Captain Jean Ribaut, a French Huguenot attempted to establish a settlement near present day Port Royal. This was to be the first Protestant settlement in the United States, but was soon abandoned. In 1566, the Spaniards built fort San Felip and a military port, St Elena, which was considered the capital of the La Florida Province for 21 years. Native Americans destroyed this fort, but the Spaniards remained and built San Marcos, a larger fort, in 1587. That same year England sent Sir Francis Drake to take the land. Drake was successful in pushing the Spaniards back to St Augustine, making room for the English to settle the area. The town of Beaufort was established in 1711 and named for one of the original proprietors of Carolina, Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort (1684-1714). During the 18th century, Beaufort thrived as indigo and cotton plantation owners of St. Helena and Parris Island began to build homes in order to visit each other and enjoy cultural activities during the summer months. In 1860, the first Ordinance to secede from the Union was drafted at the Milton Maxey House. South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860 and about one year later, a Federal fleet circled Port Royal and the Confederates abandoned Beaufort. Shortly after, the Union general Isaac Stevens occupied Beaufort’s abandoned homes and turned them into hospitals and offices for the remainder of the Civil War, thus saving Beaufort from being burned by Sherman’s troops. Bluffton, SC - approximately 20 miles/30 minutes The town of Bluffton, located in what was formerly the King’s grant to Lord Proprietor Colleton, has had quite an interesting and important history. Situated on the “High Bluff” overlooking the beautiful May River, it came to be the summering place where families of the rice and cotton planters of the surrounding low country could escape the heat, insects and malaria of other plantations located near sea-level in the early 1800’s. In those days, people here swam, boated, fished, crabbed, shrimped – and also enjoyed oysters, clams and scallops in cooler weather, as Indians had done long before their arrival. In those respects, time has apparently stood still! Travel between the coastal towns in the early days was mainly by water. Because Bluffton is situated between Savannah to the south, and Beaufort and Charleston to the north, the town became an important distribution center. Crops from farms and plantations flowed out of Bluffton to those coastal cities, and often from there to Europe. Necessary farming supplies would be bought and shipped back to Bluffton, and soon the main street which led to the town wharf boasted well-stocked general stores. As commerce increased, so did the number of travelers and boarding houses. It wasn’t long before the numbers of year-round residents and the town grew and continued to prosper. 10 April 15, 2016 In 1844, the area planters became angered by Federal tariffs which negatively impacted the price of goods they were importing from abroad. Their discontent became known as “The Bluffton Movement”. Finally, incensed planters gathered beneath what later became known as the “Secession Oak”, and the secessionist movement was born. Sixteen years later, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union. On June 4, 1863, several Union gunboats and transport carrying 1,000 infantrymen steamed up the river to Bluffton. As the officer in charge wrote in his report, “This town has been the headquarters for the rebels for a long time in this vicinity.” Troops landed with orders to fire on the town. Confederate soldiers attacked but were outnumbered and outgunned. When shelling and torching ended and the Union forces withdrew, at least 34 homes, churches and other buildings had been destroyed. This was a severe blow to the town, and it took many years for Bluffton to recover. Bluffton is as resilient as it is unique. Its antebellum homes and churches, many of which still stand, are as interesting today as they were when they were first completed. Third and fourth generation owners occupy many of the homes with tremendous pride. Today, the town draws an increasing number of residents – scholars, artists, writers, scientists, musicians, business owners, farmers and retirees – all seeking to experience the bluff, the river, the climate and the strong sense of community and independence woven into the fabric of Bluffton. 1. Hilton Head Island, SC (approximately 30 miles/45 min) Long renowned as a vacation destination, Hilton Head has become one of the foremost family vacation resorts on the East Coast. The largest barrier island south of Long Island, NY, its growth began in the 1950’s with Sea Pines, an entirely different type of land development based on environmental considerations and a prototype for Spring Island. A series of quality, private residential communities (or “plantations” as they are known on the island) continued to be developed along the 12 miles of outstanding island, beaches and waterways. The contemporary Hilton Head of today invites us to visit its world-class golf and tennis facilities, fine dining, shopping, culture centers, beaches, 50 miles of paved biking paths, water sports, boating and cruising. However, Hilton Head is more than just another resort. The island has been a frontier of Spain, a colony of France, a pivotal and strategic base of operations early in the Civil War, and a strong force in the economic resurgence of the South. These imprints of the Civil War, ruins of old plantations, Indian shell rings, the tales of ghosts and the lyrics of the Gullah language all beg for more exploration. Before you begin, you need to know the island’s “geography”. Hilton Head is shaped like a shoe, and residents refer to the toe of the shoe as the South End, the instep as Mid-Island, and the heel as the North End. As you cross the bridge onto Hilton Head, you will also encounter mile markers (staring with 1) to help you locate certain destinations. When possible, we will use these references. For easy access to the South End of the island, using the Cross Island Expressway can save time – although it does involve a toll fee ($1.25). 1. History To learn the island’s history, visit the Coastal Discovery Museum. This nationally-acclaimed Museum is a perfect place to gain a better understanding of the Low Country and Hilton Head Island’s cultural heritage and natural history. Located on the Honey Horn Plantation, the museum houses permanent and temporary exhibits, as well as educational programs for people of all ages. Savannah, GA (approximately 35 miles/40 minutes) Established in 1733, Savannah was the first planned city in the new world. Its founder, James Edward Oglethorpe, and a group of English settlers developed the city with 22 moss-draped, oak tree-filled squares located in the historic district. It remains a marvel of city planning, yet Savannah also evokes a unique sense of charm, romance, mystery, independence, resiliency and creativity. Located just 45 minutes from Spring Island, Savannah is nationally-renowned as a popular destination for tourists and visitors seeking to experience all of its mesmerizing qualities. It was not long after early settlers arrived that Savannah became the capitol of Georgia, and grew to be a bustling port famed for exporting cotton. She also became known as a city of culture, whose elegant 18th and 19th century homes and buildings blended a variety of styles still in evidence today. It was because of this beauty that during the Civil War, General Sherman spared Savannah by deciding not to burn the city during the devastating March to the Sea in December 1864. In the latter half of the 20th century, Savannah was threatened again, only this time by urban renewal. Thankfully, historic preservationists rallied efforts that continue to be amplified and refined today. One of the city’s most valued assets is the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). As the largest such school in the country, it imbues the city with a creativity that bursts forth in the offerings of a myriad of galleries and boutiques tucked amid the row houses and 13 April 15, 2016 public buildings lining the oak-shaded streets. The university also offers the SCAD Museum of Art, a premier contemporary art museum located at 601 Turner Boulevard. In addition to SCAD, the culture found in the Telfair Museum of Art is unsurpassed in the region. It is housed in a mansion designed by famous English architect William Jay, and boasts a permanent collection of priceless paintings, prints, sculptures and decorative arts. The $24.5 million Jepson Center for the Arts, adjacent to the Telfair, opened in 2006. It is the largest public arts facility in the region. Savannah obviously offers enumerable points of interest for history buffs. Cobblestone streets are paved with ballast stones used in the first ships traveling to the New World. Many homes, restaurants and buildings are fortified by two-foot thick original brick walls. Savannah Sightseeing, Tours and Attractions Savannah is a virtual plethora of styles and personalities that combine beautifully. From her nationally-known historic district to her beaches, rivers and marshes, to quaint residential areas of all eras and styles, not to mention the historic downtown squares, there is something for everyone in this city. Savannah is not only historic and lovely; it’s also a bit quirky! If you take a tour during your visit, you will hear many tales of mystery, fact, lore and gossip! For example, you might hear tales of the many ghosts who still live downtown in their ancient homes. Also, when the Colony of Georgia was founded in 1733, Catholics, lawyers and hard liquor were banned. But considering that Savannah is now home to the largest celebration in the South honoring St. Patrick, the Irish Catholic Saint, and is famous for the “To-Go Cup” (thanks to the city’s liberal view on cocktails-to-go!), Savannah has dropped those bans created long ago. Over the years, Savannah has become the fictional home of some of the silver screen’s most memorable movies, including “Forrest Gump”, “Roots”, “Gator”, “Glory”, “Something to Talk About”, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, “Forces of Nature”, “The General’s Daughter”, and the Robert Redford golf epic, “Legend of Bagger Vance”. Hollywood loves Savannah because of the beautiful Historic District and lowcountry landscapes. Take a movie tour and see the sights featured in some of pop culture’s favorite films! In a study published by the Savannah Historic Foundation, one of the most admired preservation groups in the country, more than 40 percent of the 2,500 buildings inventoried in Savannah had architectural or historical significance. Some must-see spots include: o Savannah Convention & Visitors Bureau – restored in the 1860’s, the Central Georgia Railroad Station now houses the SCVB and Savannah History Museum. Next door is the Roundhouse Railroad Museum which tells the story of more than a century of railroad history. 1-877-SAVANNAH. o Historic Downtown Savannah – Professionally-guided carriage tours, trolley tours, walking tours and automobile tours can be arranged at the SCVB. Excellent way to learn and see the city! o River Street and Riverfront Plaza – Restaurants, pubs, and unique shops in old cotton warehouses border a nine-block concourse of parks for strolling and ship watching. Don’t miss the Ships of the Sea Museum! o Factor’s Walk and The Cotton Exchange – Noted for iron bridges and cobblestones, these outstanding architectural structures embrace and preserve this unique district of the 19th century Cotton Factor’s buildings. o City Market – Vintage storefronts feature unique shops, galleries, restaurants and night life. o Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace – Founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA in 1912, this childhood home now serves as the National Headquarters of the Girl Scouts at 10 E. Oglethorpe. o Owens-Thomas House – One of the finest examples of English Regency architecture in the country, it features a historic house museum and lovely parterre gardens at 124 Abercorn St. 15 April 15, 2016 o Davenport House – Fine example of Federal architecture that served as the catalyst to organize citizens of Savannah to restore their city at 324 East State Street. o Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences – Oldest public art museum in the south! Fine American and European art collections. 121 Barnard St. o Savannah Theater – The oldest and longest continuously-running theater in America built in 1818 and designed by the same architect of Telfair Academy of Arts & Sciences. 222 Bull Street. o The Lucas Theater – This theater was built in 1921, a spectacular architectural design. Once the hub of culture for performing arts in Savannah, the building slid into dismal decline following the popularity of television. Slated for demolition and parking lot, a group of citizens united to save the beloved Lucas, including Kevin Spacey, Clint Eastwood, the cast and crew of “Forrest Gump”, and others. After 13 years and $12 million, the Lucas Theater reopened in December 2000 with a screening of “Gone with the Wind”. Although early subsequent attendance was high, the operation of the building proved too costly to maintain. The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) recognized the theater as an important cultural asset in the community and formed a relationship with the Lucas Theater for the Arts. The theater’s future is now assured by the college’s support, which allows for a wide range of community uses in addition to top-notch entertainment, including European opera, orchestral performances, traveling repertory companies, and film series. 32 Abercorn Street. o Florence Martus – Born August 7, 1868, Florence earned fame as the “Waving Girl”. She lived with her brother and lighthouse-keeper, George Martus, and between 1887 and 1931, she would wave a welcome to every incoming ship and wave goodbye to every outgoing vessel – an estimated 50,000 ships. A memorial to her legacy of Southern Hospitality is located on Historic River Street. o John Berendt’s novel, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, explores Savannah’s secrets, socialites and murder. The novel topped the NY Times best-seller list for over 5 years, and Clint Eastwood made the story into a movie in 1997 which he himself directed. See the home and walk through scenes featured in the film! o Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) – Founded in 1978 offering degrees in fine art. The college is closely engaged with the city and preservation of its rich architectural heritage. SCAD has over 9,000 students from 50 states and 100 countries. A tour of SCAD-restored buildings as well as the Gift Shop are well worth the time. o Bonaventure Cemetery – One of the most beautiful, historical sites in Savannah, and made more popular by the novel “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, with its cover depicting a young girl in sculpture (“The Bird Girl”) that had been in the cemetery essentially unnoticed for over 50 years. After publication of the book, the sculpture was donated to the Telfair Museum of Art. Bonaventure is the resting ground of fallen soldiers and citizens, including song writer Johnny Mercer, who wrote timeless classics including “Moon River” and “Fools Rush In”. The cemetery sits high on the bluff overlooking the Wilmington River in Thunderbolt and is a beautiful place for quiet reflection and meditation. 16 April 15, 2016 o Walking Tours of Savannah - Writer/Educator/Savannah Tour Guide & Story Teller, Ted Eldridge, provides a unique walking tour experience billed as “A Walk Through Savannah”. Contact him at 912-921-4455. o Tybee Island – As Savannah’s beach on the Atlantic Ocean, this is mainly a residential community mindful of a quaint beachfront village. Be sure to see the Tybee Lighthouse and Museum. o Old Fort Jackson and Fort Pulaski – On the fringes of the city, en route to Tybee Island, the remains of brick structures that have stood for many years as sentinels by the Savannah River serve as reminders of the forts’ protection of the city. o Wormsloe Plantation Historic Site – Located on the beautiful Isle of Hope, just south of downtown, scheduled reenactments of life from the earliest days of settlements take place. o Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum – Located on I-95 and Highway 80 at Exit 202, this tribute serves as a reminder of heroic deeds of service to our country. 3. Recurring Events in Savannah: (the fun never stops!) o First Saturday on the River – (held 9am – 6pm) the first weekend of each month (except Jan & Feb) features local art, crafts, food, entertainment, and fun for the family. Life’s a BEACH! Sand & Surf Spots Near Spring Island Sandy beaches in our area are predominantly found along the coastal shores of barrier islands Hilton Head, Harbor, Hunting and Fripp Islands being the most notable. Access to these beaches is often restricted, requiring visitors to make reservations at property hotels, condominiums or homes. Many SI residents visit beaches and sand bars by boat, anchoring for a few hours before motoring on their way. For a day at the beach, however, Hilton Head and Hunting Island offer the more practical options and are listed below. A. Hilton Head Island Beaches Hilton Head Island’s official beach season is April 1st through September 30th of each year. All of the beaches are public, from the ocean to the high water mark. Access to the beach, though, is often private. The Town of Hilton Head Island provides beach accesses at the following locations: o Alder Lane Beach Access, off South Forest Beach Drive o Burkes Beach Access, at the end of Burkes Beach Road o Chaplin Community Park, off William Hilton Parkway o Coligny Beach Park, off Coligny Circle o Driessen Beach Park, at the end of Bradley Beach Road o Fish Haul Park, at the end of Beach City Road o Folly Field Beach Park, off Folly Field Road o Islanders Beach Park, off Folly Field Road o Mitchelville Beach Park, off Beach City Road For complete information including directions, parking and beach rules & regulations, please visit www.hiltonheadislandsc.gov. B. Hunting Island Hunting Island, approximately 17.5 miles southeast of Beaufort, is a barrier island that is home to 5,000 acre Hunting Island State Park: a five-mile, palmetto-laden stretch of beach along the Atlantic with maritime forests, a historic lighthouse, a rental cabin and about 200 campsites near the ocean offering destinations for tents, trailers, and RV’s. Other amenities include a nature center, hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, fishing in the ocean, saltwater lagoons or off a 1,200foot pier. A park entrance fee is required, and another nominal fee is charged to access the 130foot tall lighthouse (circa 1875), and the only publicly-accessible lighthouse in the state. Brave the trip up 175 steps in the cast-iron spiral staircase! You can see for miles across the neighboring Sea Islands and Atlantic Ocean.
