Mighty God - BJ`s Bible Lessons

―HIS NAME…MIGHTY GOD‖
(Isa 9:6; 10:21; 11:11)
A. From the Hebrew text of the OT we can understand
the meaning of this name.
1. The Hebrew word for ―Mighty‖ is gibbor, which means
strong or powerful.
A. Isaiah the prophet, nearly 800 years before the birth
of Jesus Christ, declared the names that would
identify Jesus Christ our Lord.
2. The Hebrew word for ―God‖ is El, which means
Almighty, or Mighty One.
1. He would be called ―Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.‖
a. When the two words are put together, they mean
―Strong One – Mighty One.‖ (―The‖ not present in Hebrew).
2. These names tell us about His nature.
3. In addition to that, the word El is ONLY used in
reference to God.
a. ―Wonderful‖: His mighty works caused astonishment,
amazement, belief, in those who saw them.
a. It‘s never used to identify men or idols, & it‘s never
used metaphorically.
b. ―Counselor‖: His wise counsel is the only sure guide
to Father‘s house, eternal salvation.
b. So the name ―Mighty God‖ Identifies Jesus Christ our
Lord & Savior to be --- GOD!
[In this lesson we want to look at the descriptive name of
Jesus: ―Mighty God.‖]

THE MEANING OF HIS NAME: ―MIGHTY GOD‖
c. And people are foolish enough today to use that
name profusely & profanely in their speech.
…
II.
HE WAS ―MIGHTY GOD‖ AT HIS BIRTH
A. The first words in our text read, ―Unto us [Israel] a
Child is born, unto us a Son is given.‖
1. Most translations capitalize the words ―Child‖ & ―Son‖
knowing that they refer to the Christ.
2. When the angel Gabriel was sent to Mary to speak to
her about her impending delivery.
-
-
Luke 1:31-32, 35 – And behold, you will conceive in
your womb & bring forth a Son, & shall call His name
Jesus. 32 He will be great, & will be called the Son of
the Highest; & the Lord God will give Him the throne
of His father David…35 The Holy Spirit will come
upon you, & the power of the Highest will
overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who
is to be born will be called the Son of God.
―Will be called the Son of God‖ tells us that His
human nature was brought into being by God.
3. But was He ―Mighty God‖ at His birth?
2
B. God‘s prophet said, ―His name shall be called …
Mighty God.‖
1. Jesus IS deity; He is not only the Son of God - He is
God himself, as the angel declared to Joseph.
-
Matt 1:23 – Behold, the virgin shall be with child, &
bear a Son, & they shall call His name Immanuel,‖
which is translated, ―God with us.‖
-
Col 2:9 – In Him dwells all the fullness of the
Godhead bodily.
2. WHAT JESUS CAME TO DO COULD BE DONE BY
NONE OTHER THAN GOD HIMSELF.
-
Titus 2:13-14 – …our great God & Savior Jesus
Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might
redeem us from every lawless deed & purify for
Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
-
2 Tim 1:10 – … by the appearing of our Savior Jesus
Christ, who has abolished death [to render idle,
unemployed, inactive, inoperative. Thayer] & brought
life & immortality to light through the gospel,
-
Heb 2:14 – Inasmuch then as the children have
partaken of flesh & blood, He Himself likewise
shared in the same, that through death He might
destroy him [to render idle, unemployed, inactive,
inoperative. Thayer] who had the power of death, that
is, the devil,
-
Rom 5:10 – For if when we were enemies we were
reconciled to God through the death of His Son,
much more, having been reconciled, we shall be
saved by His life.
-
2 Cor 5:18 – Now all things are of God, who has
reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, &
has given us the ministry of reconciliation,
-
Col 1:21-22 – And you, who once were alienated &
enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He
has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through
death, to present you holy, & blameless, & above
reproach in His sight —
[He was, thankfully, the ―Mighty God‖ at His birth, through
His life & at His death.
But it doesn‘t end there. In fact, it doesn‘t even begin with
His birth.]

III.
HE WAS ―MIGHTY GOD‖ BEFORE HIS BIRTH
A. ―From Everlasting‖
1. Mic 5:2 (Consider reading 5:1-5) – But you, Bethlehem
Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of
Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to
be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old,
from everlasting.”
2. Psa 90:2 (Prayer of Moses) – Lord, You have been our
dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains
were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth &
the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You
are God. (Isa 40:28; Gen 21:33; Psa 41:13)
B. ―Before Abraham was I am‖
1. John 8:56-59 – ―Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My
day, & he saw it & was glad.‖ 57 Then the Jews said to
Him, ―You are not yet fifty years old, & have You seen
Abraham?‖ 58 Jesus said to them, ―Most assuredly, I say
to you, before Abraham was, I AM.‖ 59 Then they took
up stones to throw at Him…
2. Exo 3:14 – And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”
And He said, ―Thus you shall say to the children of
Israel, „I AM has sent me to you.‟”
C. ―The First & the Last‖
1. Rev 1:17 – And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as
dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me,
―Do not be afraid; I am the First & the Last.‖
A. ―God‖
1. Heb 1:8-9 – But to the Son He says: ―Your throne, O
God, is forever & ever; a scepter of righteousness is the
scepter of Your kingdom. (Psa 45:6; 83:1)
B. ―Mighty God‖ (Isa 9:6)
1. Isa 9:6 – Compare (Isa 10:21; Jer 32:18; Psa 50:1)
2. Rev 22:13 – ―I am the Alpha & the Omega, the Beginning & the End, the First & the Last.‖
3. Isa 44:6 – Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, & his
Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: ‗I am the First & I am the
Last; besides Me there is no God. (Isa 41:4; 48:12)
[Not only do the Scriptures tell us that Jesus has always
been ―Mighty God, but even His names indicate it.]

HIS NAMES INDICATE HE IS ―MIGHTY GOD‖
C. ―The Great God & Savior‖
1. Titus 2:13-14 – Read earlier
2. 2 Peter 1:1 – Simon Peter, a bondservant & apostle of
Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained like precious
faith with us by the righteousness of our God & Savior
Jesus Christ: (Isa 43:10-11)
a. Greek grammar confirms that both names refer to
the same person: the adjective ―our‖ precedes both
nouns connected by a conjunction.
D. ―Jehovah‖
1. Isa 40:3 – The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
―Prepare the way of the LORD [YAHWEY]; make
straight in the desert a highway for our God.‖
2. Mark 1:2-3 – As it is written in the Prophets: ―Behold, I
send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare
Your way before You.‖ 3 ‗The voice of one crying in the
wilderness: ‗Prepare the way of the LORD [Kurios] make
His paths straight.‘‖ (Jer 23:5-6; Rev 22:6, 16)
E. ―The True God‖
1. 1 John 5:20 – And we know that the Son of God has
come & has given us an understanding, that we may
know Him who is true; & we are in Him who is true, in
His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God & eternal
life (John 1:4; Matt 1:23; 1 Jn 1:1-2).
2. NLT – And we know that the Son of God has come, &
he has given us understanding so that we can know the
true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true
God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus
Christ. He is the only true God, & he is eternal life.
5
[All these passages indicate that Jesus is one & the same eternal
nature as the One God described in the Old Testament (cf. John
1:1-3, 14).
He even accepted worship, which only God has the authority to
command or receive (Matt 4:10; Deut 6:13; John 20:27-29; Exo
20:3; Matt 8:2; 9:18; 28:9; John 9:34-38; Heb 1:6).]
CLOSING
A. Jesus is the exact representation of God; if you
understand Jesus then you know God.
1. Jesus is co-existent, co-eternal, having the same
nature as the Father & the Holy Spirit.
a. Col 1:15 – He is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn over all creation.
b. Heb 1:3 – who being the brightness of His glory &
the express image of His person, & upholding all
things by the word of His power, when He had by
Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand
of the Majesty on high (John 14:9; 10:30; 12:45;
14:7, 10-11, 17:20-21).
c. Phil 2:6 – ―in the form of God.‖
-
The Greek word ―form‖ is morphe: the sum of
qualities that make a thing precisely what it is.
-
How would you describe the ―form‖ of a spoon? It
is metal, but so is a shovel. It has a handle, but
so has the shovel.
-
―Form‖ means more than size & shape. It means
the genesis of being, the purpose of being, & of
the same.
-
Christ is more than ―like‖ God; he is precisely &
specifically God.
HOW SHOULD KNOWING JESUS BY THIS NAME
AFFECT US!
1. We should desire to give Him our most humble & sincere
obedience.
2. We should have a sense of fear at the thought of doing
something that He would not condone.
3. It should cause to rely on Him & follow His word when we
set our course of life.
6
4. We must not tamper with His Name, it speaks of His nature:
He is not a God or a lesser God than the Father. His name
is due all the honor & praise due the Father, & it should
never be used in a common or profane manner.
B. The day is quickly approaching when everyone will
confess that Jesus Christ is the ―Mighty God‖.
1. He will soon return His glory, with all the holy angels, to
judge the nations.
2. On that day every eye will see him, every knee will bow
& every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of
the Father (Phil 2:11).
3. It will be too late for some; in that day they will make a
confession out of fear of condemnation because they
neglected to serve Him as their mighty God.
4. Do not wait for the day of vengeance.
5. Now is the day of salvation. Now is the acceptable time.
Confess Christ today as the ―Mighty God‖ who came in
His love to be your Savior.

HISTORY PROCLAIMS JESUS AS THE MIGHTY GOD
7

How else will you explain his mark on history?

Nearly twenty centuries ago he was born contrary to all the laws of
human reproduction.

He lived in poverty & was reared in obscurity.

As an infant he was exiled to Egypt to escape the wrath of a jealous
king. His hometown of Nazareth was synonymous with that which is
little & least.

He seldom moved outside an area no larger than our county. Yet
millions call him ―Lord.‖

As a lad of twelve, Jesus startled the professors of his day with his
knowledge.

In his manhood he ruled the course of nature, walked on the surface
of the sea, & stilled the tempest & healed every type of illness or
malady.

The least that was said about him was, ―He went about doing good.‖

He never wrote a book, but volumes have been written to explain
what He said.

He never attended an academy, yet scholars recognize his greatness.

He never commanded an army, but no commander had more
volunteers than he.

Explain all this if he is not the mighty God.
