Euphoria 2016 Topsy-Turvy Laboratory Survival Guide Ooh La La Lavender Farm - Eatonton, GA April 28-May 2, 2016 www.euphoriaburn.com TL;DR • New location! • Ooh La La Lavender Farm, 217 Tanyard Rd, Eatonton, GA 30124. • Map of new property on page 10 • Supplies! Shop locally to be good neighbors; see page 17 • This is an operating farm, so LNT will be even more important than ever. • No showers! Bring your own camp shower. • Have a graywater management plan. • Use biodegradable cleaning supplies. • Hazards of the land: • Fire ants: We will hopefully have them cleared from camping areas, but be mindful of your campsite and check for anthills (they are VERY obvious) • Cow poop: This will also hopefully be gone by the event, but be mindful. • Marshy areas: Even within event bounds, there are some marshy areas you will want to avoid. Watch where you’re walking and wear a headlamp. • Please wear headlamps, watch your steps, and always be aware of your surroundings and the ground, as there are several deep ravines. • Ticks! Wear repellent and check yourself daily. Or get Lyme disease if that’s how you radically express yourself. • Out Of Bounds: There are no-go areas clearly marked in the survival guide. Our new land is an operating farm and the owners live on-site; respect their desire to keep the area around their home peaceful Trespassing will result in you being removed from the property. Please see site map section for details, page 10. • No-go areas include the area around the homeowner’s house, the lake, the barn, the fields to north of barn and house, and everything between the Education Station and the house. • Some areas may be accessible to on-duty volunteers with their laminates only for work purposes due to location of infrastructure. • Fire Safety: • The Hinterlands (forested area to rear of camping areas) is a NO FIRE, NO SMOKING, GLOW-ONLY zone. There is no fire permitted of any kind, including cigarettes, pipes, or anything else, in the Hinterlands. This is for your safety and will be strictly enforced in order to preserve our relationship with the landowners. • Other areas may be marked as NO FIRE, GLOW-ONLY zones based on land conditions at time of event. We strongly urge you to read the whole guide as everything’s topsy-turvy this year with the move to the new land. There are important changes that you need to know about the Lavender Farm as opposed to Cherokee Farms. You mean I have to come up with more stupid things to say down here? . 2 New property. New landowners. New rules. No assumptions. Please be good to our new land so our new land remains our home for a long, long time. • Bring first aid supplies: First Aid team eliminated because radical self-reliance. • Schedule changes! More details on page 19 • Early entry begins at 10am on Wednesday. No in-and-out after midnight. • Regular entry opens at 9am Thursday. Gate will be open 24 hours except for during effigy, but you are strongly encouraged to arrive during daylight hours. • Temple burn is at 10am Sunday instead of sunrise. • New Arrival/Exodus Procedures! More detail on page 30 • There will be no vehicle access to camping areas after dark. If arriving after dark, there will be a shuttle with room for your gear (weather permitting, & as long as there are volunteers staffing it!) However, there may be a line. We strongly recommend arriving during daylight hours. Shuttle service begins at 7pm. • If you arrive during daylight, you must move your car to parking within two hours of arrival or before sunset, whichever is sooner. • Print waiver ahead of time for faster entry: http://www.euphoriaburn.com/waivers • RVs MUST register. You must be escorted to your campsite by a Traffic Team volunteer. If there are no available volunteers, you may be asked to wait. Unregistered RVs will only be placed in RV camping area if there’s space available. • Ingress, Exodus, and Traffic are new volunteer teams. The people helping you get where you need to go? They’re volunteers, spending time of their burn to help you. Please be respectful and patient, especially in our first event at new property. • Sunday, the new Exodus team will be managing traffic flow on-site to avoid traffic snarls and get everyone out in an orderly fashion. This means you may need to wait a few minutes to move your car or to leave the event. Reading is sexy. Clarke Atomic motion; protons and neutrons and electrons, a delicate balance in never-ending flight, whirling, dancing, colliding, energy releasing and recombining in elemental chaos. This is the lab of possibility; creation leads to destruction, destruction to creation, energy released only to recombine and be released once again. What truths shall we find when we shake it all up? What stories can we tell when we begin it all anew? A periodic table of human potential, rising from lavender fields; new elements created in the intersection of magic and science. Everything old is new again, so say yes to chaos. Challenge everything, including yourself. Design new experiments, test new hypotheses. Learn what is possible by doing the impossible. In this topsy-turvy laboratory, the wonders of the atom shall be revealed. The only missing element is you. Theme by Rebecca Rea * Image by Robert Dukes * Words by Ben Bjostad Rejected theme idea: “Who Invited All You Tacky People?” 7 Before Euphoria Our New Home: Starting with Euphoria, we’ll be moving to Ooh La La Lavender Farm, a few miles northeast of Eatonton, GA Located about an hour and a half east of Atlanta, our new home is an operating farm, in gently rolling hills with a mix of open pastures and fields, old-growth hardwood forest, and replanted pine forest. Situated on several hundred acres, it is surrounded by other farms and open land, with fewer neighbors than we’ve been used to. It is quite a bit larger than Cherokee Farms, although it is an operating farm so some parts may be closed off or inaccessible at any given burn. The open fields are flatter than at Cherokee Farms, which should be conducive both to campsites and to more bicycles and art cars. The older forested areas feature broad canopies and plenty of shade. The pine forest is perfect for hammock camping, and the trails provide room for people to wander and explore. (note: the forested areas will NOT be available for camping this year.) It is more rustic than Cherokee Farms; there are less structures, and no showers. We will improve the land, build new roads, establish more infrastructure, but this will take time, and it won’t all happen this year. So come prepared for rustic camping. Read on for maps, overviews of the different parts of the property, and important information on the new land and how to prepare. Think of all the trebuchets we could fit on this property! . 8 Where To Camp? The exciting part of moving to a new home is that everything is topsy-turvy! Veteran Alchemists and Euphorians knew what each area of Cherokee Farms tends to be like, but at Euphoria, each area of our new home will begin to develop its own identity. While Euphoria will only be using a small portion of our new home since it’s our first event there (and since Euphoria has a much lower population than Alchemy,) there will be plenty of room for both theme camps and open camping. Figuring out navigation and where you want to camp may difficult, but be patient, as at least this Euphoria will be sure to give you lots of ideas for where you want to be at Alchemy. If you’re part of a theme camp, your placement will be set and we’ll help you find it when you arrive. If not, no need to fret as there are areas set aside for open camping. If you need some help finding your people or a place to call home, ask at Education, go to Connexus inside the burn, or flag down a Ranger; they’re in bright blue shirts and available to help you anytime at the burn. Don’t like your placement? You can have your old spot from last year back. Might be awfully quiet though… 9 Site Map For the official Euphoria placement map, please visit http://www.euphoriaburn.com/placementmap . 7 4 NO ACCESS 1 3 2 6 5 9 8 1 – Dnagerzone (Effigy) 2 – The Borough (Theme Camps) 3 – Pandora (Theme Camps) 4 – Night Vale (Quiet Camping & Temple) 5 – District 13 (Open Camping) 6 – Downtown (Rangers / Connexus / Other Teams) 7 – Parking & Greeters 8 – Hinterlands 9- Old Forest All camping for Euphoria will be located in sections 2-5. Look Ma, no Roswell! 10 1 - Dnagerzone (Effigy area) This area will be where the effigy and art burns (except for Temple burn) are located, as well as a spot for art installations and social gathering. No camping will be permitted in this area. 2 – The Borough + 6 - Downtown The Borough will be one of the primary areas for theme camps. Stretching from the effigy to the ‘bend’ in the L-shaped field that is the central part of our city, this area is predominantly flat, although bumpy. It’s bordered on by forests and a creek. There are bridges over the creek at each end for easy access to District 13. Looking down the field from the effigy, Downtown, where many volunteer teams such as Rangers and Connexus will be placed, will be on the right, most of the way down toward the bend. #MakeEuphoriaGreatAgain 11 3 - Pandora Pandora runs down the other half of the ‘L’ from ‘downtown’ to the temple area. This is another prime section for theme camps It features slight, rolling hills to break up sightlines, and trees scattered throughout the field. 4 - Night Vale (Temple + quiet camping) Night Vale is where we get to place something many Alchemists and Euphorians have wanted for a long time: a quiet zone. This area will feature no amplified sound, no generators, and a general calm vibe. The topography of our new land means that unlike Silent Hill at Cherokee Farms, the area should actually be quiet, or as quiet as one can get at a burn. The Temple is also placed at this end of the field. To keep those other burners out, we’re gonna build a wall. And Transformus is gonna pay for it. 12 5 - District 13 (Open Camping) This is a small field separated from the Lfield by a creek (hidden by the row of trees in the picture. It backs up to the Hinterlands and is connected to The Borough and Downtown by bridges. It is mostly flat, and surrounded by tall trees for lots of shade. This area will be reserved for open camping at Euphoria. It is also walk-in camping only; no vehicles will be allowed across the creek. 7 - education / Parking This area is adjacent to the lavender patch that gives the farm its name, as well as the property owner’s home and the pond. This area will not be part of the burn proper; parking will be located here as will the Education Station, but we will ask people not to linger in this area aside from visiting Education or their vehicles. There will be no access to the lavender field, house, or pond. The pond is NOT swimmable anyway, for health reasons, as this is an operating farm (unless you like swimming in cow manure and despair.) Please respect the property owners by obeying the no trespassing rules around the pond, house, and lavender. See that bridge? It’s called the Bridge to Terabithia. Don’t argue with me. 13 8 – Hinterlands & 9 – Old Forest These areas are not open for camping at Euphoria, but will be accessible for exploration. Keep in mind that these two areas are larger than all of Cherokee Farms and it is easy to get lost. Explore at your own risk. The Hinterlands is one of the favorite sections of many who have been out to visit the new land. It is a pine forest, and much of it is comprised of regularly spaced rows of pine trees, perfect for hammock camping and beautiful at night. The Hinterlands will be closed for camping at Euphoria, but it is hoped that open camping can occur back here at future burns. Next to the Hinterlands is a large conservation old-growth forest, with many trees that are centuries old. The third-oldest tree in Georgia is in this forest, a 450year-old oak tree. Because pine forest, the Hinterlands is a glow-only, no fire, no open flame zone. This policy will be strictly enforced for safety & the health of the land. No fire pits, no fire spinning, no cigarettes, pipes, or smoking of any kind. It’ll always be Cheesepants’ Magical Forest of Manifestation to me, but Rebecca totes won that debate. 14 Farewell to Cherokee Farms It’s important to note that as late as November of 2015, much of the community was worried we wouldn’t have a home in time for Euphoria. The fact that we do have a home, and that our home is this amazing, is a testament to the diligent work of the Land Search Committee. Dozens of burners participated in the process, through suggestions of location, phone calls and e-mails, site visits, planning, contract negotiations, and all the boring administrative legwork that goes into finding a venue. Thank y’all for your hard work and for finding us a place to call home. It’s also important to remember Cherokee Farms as our home for 9 years of Alchemy and 5 years of Euphoria. Smokee, the owner of Cherokee Farms, not only was a gracious host, but in many ways he became part of the Alchemy/Euphoria family. We owe him a huge thank you for all he did for us; there were many issues out of his control that led to our move, but he did as much as any of us to make our first decade of burns a success. Farewell, Cherokee Farms. Hello, Lavender Farms. 15 Navigating to Euphoria Euphoria will be held at the Ooh La La Lavender Farm, located at 217 Tanyard Rd, Eatonton, GA 30124. Driving time is approximately ninety minutes from downtown Atlanta. Eatonton and Putnam County have done a lot to make Euphoria and Alchemy welcome in their county, and one of the best ways to show them our gratitude is through the economic impact we make on their community. When you buy your supplies in Eatonton or Putnam County, your tax dollars go to support the community that is welcoming us with open arms. That’s important. Please note that the Walmart right off the interstate is NOT in Putnam County, but if you must go to Walmart, the one listed below is and it’s only five minutes off the route to the burn. (Note: This list is presented for informational purposes. Flashpoint Artists Initiative does not endorse or recommend any specific business listed here.) NO PLEASE DON’T KILL ME I’M SORRY… 17 Showers & Sanitation Stay clean, but Leave No Trace. One of the changes with the new land is that we don’t have showers! It’s easy to bring your own; camp showers are available at many outdoor or camping supply stores, or there are plans online to build your own. That being said, in accordance with the Leave No Trace ethos, please take care with your camp shower to use only toiletries that are biodegradable. There is no gray water disposal at Lavender Farm, so you will need to transport any “gray water” (water which has been used for dishwashing, showering, etc. and contains ANY food, non-biodegradable soap or cleaning products, etc.) offsite. Bring a funnel and use the jugs you brought your water with to bring it back out! We recommend using a biodegradable soap like Dr. Bronner’s or Campsuds (available from REI. The easiest gray water to dispose of is the gray water you don’t produce. Find ways to minimize use of water and nonbiodegradable products. Use waterless disinfectant lotion (available at drugstores) to sanitize your hands before you handle food. When you shower, first get wet and turn the water off; then soap up and scrub down, then turn the water back on to rinse off. Or shower with a friend, and trade off controlling and directing the water supply. Hard core: take a sponge bath instead. It’s possible to wash your body clean with a pint of water, soap and a washrag. Dishwashing: In your kitchen area, set up a low-volume water spray over a basin, for dishwashing and hand cleaning. A personal spray bottle is a good starting point. Bring several small hand towels (say three per person); use one towel end on clean dishes and the other end to wipe your hands and face clean. You’ll need remarkably little water to wash up with. Wipe out dishes with paper towels rather than washing, or before washing. Porta-potties are located in several locations around the burn. Please don’t dispose of anything in the porta-potties, except for toilet paper, that didn’t come from your body. No trash, no wet wipes, nothing. Why? Someone has to fish it out before they can clean the porta-potty out. Let’s not be jerks to the porta-potty cleaners. Clean hippies > dirty hippies 18 Running on Burn Time As its own society, Euphoria runs on Burner Standard Time, but there are certain things it’s good to be on time for. Volunteer shifts…if you’re late getting there, someone else is late getting off-shift. • Early Entry Opens: Wed, April 27, 10am EST (Please note: You must have an early entry pass for early entry. ) • Gate Opens: Thurs, April 28 at 9AM EST (Please note, gate is open at all times during event, except during effigy burn Sat, or if there are weather challenges.) • Conclave Meeting: Sat, 2pm @ the Effigy. • Conclave: Saturday, 930pm (approximate) • Effigy Burn: Saturday, 10pm (approximate) • Temple Burn: Sunday, 10am. • Event closed (GTFO!): Monday, May 2, noon. Volunteer Opportunity: APW The Public Works Team (APW) oversees all infrastructure needs before and during the event. APW works with all other teams as well as the Event Committee s to identify and procure needed materials. Additionally, they are responsible for teardown of site, building or organizing the building of all structures (except the Effigy and Temple) and setting up infrastructure onsite, as well as overseeing the physical inventory and maintenance of all of FAI’s property. APW needs dedicated volunteers (timmies) to accomplish a great number of general and skilled labor tasks before and during the Burn. Check out Public Works at http://euphoriaburn.com/teams/publicworks Sunday, GTFO. Teardown (for what!) wants to leave too. 19 The Ten Principles These principles were developed to guide our ancestor event, Burning Man, and are central to Euphoria. This is, essentially, the underlying social contract of a burn. Please respect the Principles and make them a part of everything you do at the event. But remember, they are simply guidelines for you to question, interpret, and make your own. Don’t just blindly accept them. Talk about them. Develop your own interpretation. Radical Inclusion: Everyone is welcome, all types, all kinds, friends, strangers, and in between. Communal Effort: Cooperation and collaboration are cornerstones of the burn experience. We cooperate to build social networks, group spaces, and elaborate art, and we work together to support our creations. Leave No Trace: In an effort to respect the environments where we hold our burns, we commit to leaving no trace of our events after we leave. Everything that you bring with you goes home with you. Everyone cleans up after themselves. Whenever possible, we leave our hosting places better than we found them. Adorable kittens are allowed in survival guide, but please don’t bring them to Euphoria. 20 Radical Self-Reliance: You are responsible for you. Bring everything with you that you need. Burns are an opportunity for you to enjoy relying on yourself. Gifting: Gifts are unconditional offerings, whether material, service oriented, or even less tangible. Gifting does not ask for a return or an exchange for something else. Decommodification: Hand in hand with gifting, burns are environments with no commercial transactions or advertising. Nothing is for sale - we participate rather than consume. Participation: The radical participation ethic means you are the event. Everyone works; everyone plays. No one is a spectator or consumer. OMG Kittens! 21 Civic Responsibility: Civic responsibility involves the agreements that provide for the public welfare and serve to keep society civil. Event organizers take responsibility for communicating these agreements to participants and conducting events in accordance with applicable laws. Radical self-expression: What are your gifts, talents, and joys? Only you can determine the form of your expression. Immediacy: Experience things right now. Live for the moment, because that moment is fleeting, and you never get another chance. I like kitties. 22 A Partial Glossary • Events Committee (EC)): Formerly known as the ELT (Event Lead Team), this is the team of volunteers who manage the event. They’re burners like you and I who facilitate the needs of the community. They are selected by the Board of Directors, which in turn is elected by the burner community. • Team Leads: the people who head up teams that provide services to the burn, such as First Aid, Placement, Center Camp, etc. • Sparklepony: a somewhat negative term for burners who show up to the event with little or no food and water, suitcases full of costumes and makeup, who do no work and no volunteering and only exist to look pretty, have fun, and get drunk. Usually vapid and covered in glitter. • MOOP: Matter Out Of Place- trash, litter, things lost or left behind, things on the ground that shouldn’t be there. • POOP: People Out Of Place- people who are not where they should be. If you see someone passed out on the ground in the middle of the field, they may be drunk or having a medical emergency. Check on them and see if they’re ok. • LOOP: Llamas Out Of Place. OK, I’ll stop now. • LNT: Leave No Trace- the concept that we should leave the property in better shape than we found it. It can also be verbed, as in “Hey, I’m going to LNT the campsite after everyone packs up.” • Ground Score: MOOP that is useful to you, if you find something that someone dropped and you keep itit's a ground score. If it looks valuable or like someone would want it back, though, don’t be a dick, take it to lost and found. If you give it to any Ranger, they’ll make sure it gets to lost and found. • Darkwad: someone who is running around at night with no glow on It gets dark out there. Real dark. Don’t get run over by a golf cart or bicycle…wear some freaking light. • Swag: A memento from a burn, often wearable. You get swag for attending from Greeters, often swag from your volunteer teams, and people you meet may gift you swag they made for the burn. And this is just the part of the glossary I’m allowed to put in the guide… 23 Packing For Euphoria What should I bring? What shouldn’t I bring? Radical self-reliance, yo! Bring your necessities, your frivolities, your gifts and your supplies. There’s nothing for sale, nothing for trade…you are responsible for your own experience, your own supplies, and your own luxuries. But what about gifting? What about it? Gifting isn’t trading. Showing up expecting to live off of gifts defeats the purpose of gifting. Show up with everything you need to survive and thrive…and maybe you can help someone who forgets something or didn’t know how to prepare as well as you did. (And why didn’t they know how to prepare as well as you did? You’re reading the survival guide!) Pack it In To Pack It Out! Keep in mind that there are no trash cans or dumpsters at Euphoria. If you pack it in, you must pack it out. Here’s how to make it easier. • Pack reusable, washable dishes and utensils, not plastic or paper. It also saves you money! • Remove as much packaging as possible before packing. Especially food…put as much as possible in tupperwares or ziplocs. Take cereal out of the box and just bring the bag. Get creative! • Ziploc bags are your friend. • Use reusable lights instead of glowsticks. • Aluminum beer cans are crushable. Glass bottles aren’t. • Bring a water bottle to carry and refill from large containers of water instead of a bunch of small prefilled water bottles. It’s much cheaper to buy water in 2 or 5 gallon jugs anyway. • Heavy-duty contractor bags are a huge help in packing it all out. You don’t want your trash bag ripping open in your car or strapped to your roof on the way home! Don’t forget your lube. 24 It’s a found object game…see if you can find all the things in this drawing we recommend for Euphoria!– Art Credit: Citrus Blossom Don’t go to next page yet. You missed one. 25 What To Bring: Essentials Ticket: Please have your ticket ready when you get to the gate. By doing this you will get into the event quicker. You will also need your early entry pass, if you are arriving on Wednesday. You should also check the website and, if possible, print your own waiver and bring it with you to get in faster. ID: A valid government-issued ID is required to get into the event. Also, just like in default world, you have to be 21 to drink and you will be carded by theme camps that run bars. Burner pro-tip: Photocopy your ID and tape to the outside of your cup. That way you won’t lose your ID! Water: You should bring at least one gallon of water per person, per day, or more if hot weather is forecast. Please be aware of the predicted weather, and plan accordingly! Food: Make sure you bring enough food to sustain yourself for the whole event plus one day if there’s a delay in leaving. Bring jerky, energy bars, granola, or other easy and quick supplemental food to keep you going when there’s too much stuff going on to think about cooking. Or prepare meals at home, put them in your cooler and heat up on your camp stove. First Aid Kit: A good basic first-aid kit, including any medications you might need or are prescribed, ibuprofen or aspirin, bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze, etc. Shelter: Be sure your shelter is sufficient protect you and your belongings from the elements! If you're camping in a tent or other structure that employs stakes and/or guy-lines, mark your stakes and lines with something to increase their visibility. Tarps are essential should your tent require reinforcement against ground moisture or inclement weather. They're also particularly useful for slinging over hammocks and building tarp forts. Bedding and Blankets: Bring whatever bedding is necessary to turn your tiny corner of Euphoria into a cozy nest. Keep in mind air mattresses don’t retain heat…bring extra blankets! Appropriate Clothing: You should come to Euphoria prepared to live outside for several days in rain, snow, mud, or a heat wave…be prepared! FABULOUS COSTUMES are encouraged, but please make sure they don't have pieces that will fall off and become trash (e.g., feathers, loose glitter, sequins, or unsecured dangly bits). Light: Don't be a darkwad! It gets very dark at night. Bring light that will allow you to see (and allow others to see you). (Reusable > glowsticks, because LNT!) Toiletries: If you want it while using the shower or toilet, bring it with you (and take it with you when you leave). This includes toilet paper, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. Please use biodegradable toiletries as we’re on an operating farm! Utensils: You may meet many people who are willing (even eager) to share food and/or drinks with you, but most of them will expect you to have your own plate, bowl, spork, cup, etc. Utensils with loops or holes in their handles and a carabiner to keep them handy are highly recommended. Bug/Tick Repellent: Especially since there aren’t showers at Lavender Farms, you may not notice ticks for a couple days. It’s a good idea to wear tick repellent. According to the Dept. of Public Health, ticks usually need 24+ hours to transmit Lyme disease to their carriers, so check yourself 1-2x per day! Camping hack: Show up empty-handed and manifest the fuck out of some gear. (Don’t actually do this.) 26 Do Not Bring While we prefer to minimize rules and regulations, there’s a few things we don’t allow at Euphoria, due to either the law or the safety of our participants. Firearms: This is a no-brainer, but do not bring your firearm to Euphoria. This includes BB guns, airsoft guns, or paintball guns. Water guns are OK & NERF launchers if you make sure the darts don’t become MOOP. Wish/Sky Lanterns: We recognize that they’re super pretty and that many people use them as part of personal rituals. But they’re also uncontrolled flying fireballs in the air, and will cause fires and/or leave a mess. Pets: No pets (except preregistered service animals) are allowed at Euphoria. Fireworks: NOPE. Even if they’re legal in the state of Georgia. You’ve got 1000 people on a not terribly big piece of land, which makes this a safety hazard. Yes, we burn the effigy, but that is done according to a detailed safety plan.. Yes, you’ll see some epic flame effects and art, but each and every one is inspected for safety by the fire safety team. If you bring fireworks, you’re going to be asked to turn them in or leave. Don’t ruin your burn trying it. Proceed With Caution Lasers: BEHOLD THE SPACEFUTURE. Lasers are awesome, but with great awesome comes great responsibility. A Burning Man ranger was blinded by a portable laser last year on the playa. Even if you’re shining it at the trees, the slopes at the Lavender Farm mean you could be shining it right at someone on the other side of the trees. Do not shine your laser anywhere near the ground or you could seriously injure someone. Better yet, leave it at home and enjoy the stars. Drones: MOAR SPACEFUTURE! Photography drones, those little multi-rotor flying things with cameras on them, are awesome! But they can be dangerous if you’re not experienced with them; they’re so easy to fly that you don’t realize you don’t know what to do when something goes wrong. Also, there are privacy issues with flying cameras. You must get consent from anyone you photograph with a drone. Alcohol: It’s a burn, and a lot of people drink.. But if you can’t handle your alcohol, and you don’t have anyone to babysit you, getting drunk may be a bad idea (and not the fun kind!) Radical-self-reliance means no volunteers are going to spend their time taking care of you. We encourage camps with bars to own their drunks, and people to take care of their drunk friends, but if you’re a danger to yourself or others, you’ll be taken to the hospital. Drink responsibly, or stay with someone you trust to be responsible for you. Don’t be that guy. 27 Euphorians Of All Ages! Euphoria is an all-ages community; we love kids! Please note that there are all kinds of people, camps and events that may be present at Euphoria. Just as in daily life, you are fully and solely responsible for the safety and security of your own spawn and the things to which they are exposed. Please keep your eye on your children and be responsible for their well‐being. This year, adults with children under 12 years old can go to Rangers after entering Euphoria to enlist in the ‘tag and release’ program. The Ranger shift lead will put an arm band on you and one on your child, each with a unique number that corresponds to your neighborhood or theme camp. No other identifying information will be on the bracelets. The Ranger on-duty will get your name, your child's name, a picture of you together, and where you are camped, and will store that information in a locked file box that is only accessible to event leadership. If we find your child separate from you, we can use that bracelet to look up the child's information and hopefully return the child to you more quickly. This registration is completely optional, but highly suggested. If you lose track of your child, please let a Ranger or any volunteer know. While children under 12 do not need their own ticket, everyone twelve and up must have their own ticket for entry. Children under 18 must be accompanied by their legal guardian(s) in order to enter Euphoria. If a legal guardian is not one of the child's biological or adoptive parents, they need to provide proper, legal documents to establish legal guardianship, such as a court order - a letter signed by the parent purporting to grant a power or attorney or guardianship is not sufficient. You will be required to sign a waiver for each person in your care who is under 18 years old. The gate staff will provide a separate waiver for each minor. Service Animals If you have a service dog, you must pre-register by April 11. Your service animal must be microchipped and up to date on their shots, and must be tagged with owner’s contact info. Service animals must be leashed at all times by direction of the landowner. If you’re interested in camping with or getting advice from other burner families, there are several theme camps that specialize in families with children.! Check the theme camp list at Euphoriaburn.com or the Euphoria Facebook group. Note: Service animals are working. If you see a burner with a service dog, please do not ask them why they have a service dog or interrupt them doing their job. Would you ask someone to pet their wheelchair? Would you ask someone why they’re in a wheelchair? Then don’t ask about their service dog. For more info, visit http://euphoriaburn.com/teams/serviceanimals Don’t pet people’s service animals (or kids, for that matter) without consent. Not cool. 28 Volunteering At Euphoria Did you know Euphoria is 99.99% volunteer-run? The only paid staff we have are trained paramedics for major injuries and a few perimeter patrollers to keep everyone safe. Everyone else, from the Event Leads on down, is a burner who believes in civic responsibility enough to work to make the burn more awesome. We call ourselves action hippies. And you can be one! It brings a whole new level of awesome to your burn to know that you helped make it happen. And we all help make it happen, but keeping it running, pitching in and helping, gives many people more of a sense of ownership of their burn. And even when the burn’s over, there’s always opportunities to help plan for the next one. Since Flashpoint Artists Initiative (the producers of Alchemy and Euphoria), is a non-profit, doing volunteer work even looks fantastic on a resume! Scattered throughout this guide are short snippets of info about each team. Some are included in information about other items, and some get a sidebar if we couldn’t find a different place to put them. If you’d like to dive right in, go to volunteer.alchemyburn.com,, or stop by Connexus on-site to sign up for a shift. Volunteer Opportunity: Connexus Connexus is the main information station during the event. We're the ones you want to visit when you have questions and are in need of answers! We rely heavily on participants to stop by and let us know if you wandered upon a cool thing that you think others would want to know about, or maybe you have a theme camp wanting to feed people or throw a party. Stop by and let us know so we can add it to our board of events and spread the word! Connexus is also the public interface between the burn and the Volunteer Coordinator. Want the effigy to burn on time? Stop by and ask if they're in need of more volunteers! If you decide on site that you have more you want to give to the community, Connexus has an up to date volunteer schedule where you can write yourself in to pick up a list minute shift with your favorite (or decently liked) team. http://euphoriaburn.com/teams/connexus Volunteers are very sexy. 29 Entering Euphoria The first place you’ll get to is gate. Have your printed-out ticket and photo ID ready to go. You’ll get your ticket scanned, sign your waiver, and then you get to go to the education station! Note that tickets are transferable. It is not necessary for your name to be on your ticket, nor do you need to notify us if you have transferred your ticket to someone else. Each ticket has a unique bar code that may only be used once for entry to Euphoria. Please note that you must have a ticket when you arrive at the gate. Do not show up to wait for a ticket; for safety purposes, there is no loitering or camping at the gate. To get through gate faster, you may print your waiver out here and fill it out in advance: http://www.euphoriaburn.com/waivers Education, often called “greeters,” is your next stop. They’re here to welcome you home to Euphoria, and to act as a portal of transition from the mundane Default World into the Temporary Autonomous Zone of the Burn. This team also exists to acculturate you into the burn and promote a deep understanding and practice of the 10 Principles of Burning Man , which are central to the Euphoria experience. The Education Team highly encourages you to be familiar with the principles before arrival, as they are the shared values that tie together all that is burn culture. Are you ready to burn? Got everything you need? There’s no in and out. If you leave, there’s only three ways to get back in: Pay for another ticket, collect 15 pieces of swag to turn in, or get approval prior to leaving from an Event Lead (this option only applies in genuine emergencies.) Make sure you’re ready before you reach the gate. Be sure to ask for the special VIP initiation at greeters. Bring your own electrified alligator clips or we’ll use the really painful ones. 30 Driving Into Euphoria If you arrive at Euphoria during daylight hours, you will have two (2) hours *or* until sunset to unload your belongings, whichever comes first. You must then immediately move your car to the parking lot. If you arrive at Euphoria after dark, you will not be able to drive into event. You will be directed to the parking lot. A truck with trailer will shuttle arriving burners and their gear to their campsite or a point close to it. Once you’ve parked, you can swing back by Greeters long enough to get your swag. Once your vehicle is parked it must stay parked until you leave unless you’re a registered art car. We recommend arriving during daylight: shuttles will only run if there are volunteers to drive them, and there may be a wait. It is critical to keep roads clear for emergency vehicles, so please make sure you park in a designated parking area or you could get towed, and that you have pulled completely out of the road when offloading if you offload at your camp. Rules of the Road • All vehicles must drive at a speed of 5 mph or less. • All motor vehicles must give the right of way to pedestrians & bicycles. Volunteer Opportunities: Parking / Traffic / Exodus Traffic, Parking, and Exodus teams work to get you in and out of the burn safely! They are responsible for controlling access into and out of the burn areas, running shuttles between parking and camping areas after dark & at other times that vehicle access to camping areas is shut down, and managing vehicle flow throughout the burn, but especially during Exodus. Those of you who attended Alchemy 2015 know how crucial these volunteers are to a successful, smooth burn. If you’d like to volunteer, visit Traffic: http://euphoriaburn.com/teams/traffic Exodus: http://euphoriaburn.com/teams/exodus Parking: http://euphoriaburn.com/teams/parking • All vehicles must stop immediately upon being hailed by any Euphoria volunteer (Rangers / Traffic / Exodus / etc.) • Drive only in approved areas (see map for details). • Traffic in and out of burn areas is daylight only, weather permitting. • Lamplighters have right of way during procession. • All traffic will STOP so long as an Emergency Vehicle is on property. “Tire pressure is a privilege, not a right.” - Danger Ranger, founder of the Black Rock Rangers. 31 Enduring Euphoria Nature Self-Care It’s cold at night, you won’t be sleeping much or on a regular schedule, and you’ll be running all over the place acting crazy. Take care of yourself. Dose up on vitamin C, take your vitamins, bring some ibuprofen and Tylenol with you, etc. Take the time to sleep when you can so you don’t burn out by Saturday and crash. Be good to yourself. If you have a teddy bear or blanket you love when you’re sad/overwhelmed/sick, bring it. Many participants are physically taxed and emotionally overwhelmed. Take the steps you need to take so that you’re not miserable by burn day. You are out in a very rural area, so be aware of your surroundings. Some hazards you might expect to find include: poison oak, poison ivy, snakes, fire ants, mosquitos, spiders, ticks, skunks, and scorpions. It isn't exactly Australia, but don't play with the wildlife all the same. Be careful and attentive, and you should be able to avoid any unpleasant or painful encounters with the itchy, pointy, and/or smelly side of nature. Be aware of your surroundings and take care in setting up camp. Also, there are potholes, ravines, and steep drop-offs throughout the property. Wear a light at night and watch where you’re going. You may occasionally see orange fencing, and this is used to mark specific dangers (e.g., fuel storage, trip hazards, and bear traps.) Other areas may be marked as off-limits in different ways due to ravines or other known land hazards. Introverts, Unite! (separately, in our own tents) “I usually need to find a way to be alone at least once during the burn. Part of my self-care is bringing a pair of headphones. Most of the time, you don’t want to close yourself off from the burn by putting headphones on, but I find that if, every couple of days, I wander off into the woods or close myself into my tent and put my headphones on for an hour and listen to music, it gives my inner introvert the recharge of ‘alone time’ I need to go back out and be awesome. That’s just an example. Take into account what you need to be emotionally healthy for four-five days without a lot of places to get away from everyone.” Srsly, bring your teddy bear. He or she would miss you. 32 In Case Of Emergency For 2016, the First Aid team has been eliminated. You will need to bring your own first aid kit for any minor sicknesses or injuries; Euphoria does NOT provide first aid supplies for participants. All registered theme camps are required to maintain a first aid kit for their members or other participants that may be injured at your camp. We do have paid medics on-site for medical emergencies. If you have a medical emergency, you may come to the Ranger station to request a medic, or flag down any Ranger or anyone with a radio to call one to your location. In most cases, contacting Rangers or other emergency staff on-site is faster and more effective than directly calling 911; if 911 needs to be called, we’re happy to do so. If you feel like you must call 911, you may, but please notify a Ranger or staff member as soon as possible. This way we can clear the road and have staff members standing by to guide them to the correct location. This is very important, as if an ambulance arrives Volunteer Opportunity: unannounced, we won’t be able to help them find you. Please note that some cell Rangers phone carriers do NOT have service or have Rangers are participants, first and poor service at the Lavender Farm. foremost. We have no authority, only the desire to be there for those who need help. Rangers wear distinctive blue shirts and can be found walking around the burn, We’re often asked to help burners with conflict resolution, or providing information. We also play a role in safety; if someone is injured, we will assist with escorting medical personnel to where they need to go, or be present if someone feels unsafe at a given moment. If you have a pre-existing medical condition that could require emergency care, please share this with your campmates so that they know what you may need in case of an emergency. Also, please be sure to bring any inhalers, epipens, or medications you might need, and know where they are at all times. If you enjoy taking care of others, and the satisfaction of helping other burners have the best experience they can have, we might be the team for you! It’s a great way to meet people and get to know the burn. Come join us! For more info, visit www.euphoriaburn.com/teams/rangers Seriously. Be careful. We like you. Don’t get hurt. But if you do, do it in a hilarious way. 33 Fire Safety Obviously we are burners, and we love to burn. Everyone likes to say, “Safety Third!” Realistically though, we have to be cautious about things like fuel storage and fire play. Ground Fires and Burn Barrels There are no ground fires allowed at Euphoria. Even if there is a burn scar on the ground, you cannot have a ground fire. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. This is an operating farm and practicing LNT is essential. You may bring your own burn barrels or fire bowls, but please place something under burn barrels so that no scars are left beneath them. Bricks work well, but make sure the object is elevated high enough to not cause a burn scar. All previous burn scars and all reported/identified fire bowls and burn barrels will be recorded. Any new burn scars after the event will be identified on the MOOP map and may result in denial of placement for your theme camp next year. Please put out open fires if you are not going to be around to tend them. If we find an unattended fire and cannot find who is watching over it, we will extinguish it. Flame Art and Flame Effects Any flame art or flame effects must be inspected for safety and tagged as approved for use by a member of the fire safety team. All operators must receive a tag that they are approved to use the flame art or flame effects. Any untagged fire installations, or installations without an approved operator present, will be shut down. NO FIRE ZONE For safety reasons, the pine forest (Hinterlands) is a zero-tolerance NO FIRE zone. This includes fire spinning and open flame of any sort. Pine forests of this type are very prone to forest fire and open flame could present an extreme hazard to all participants. It’s all Buddy’s fault. 34 Fire Spinning And Flow For fire performers: • Don't spin fire if you are inebriated and can't do it safely. • Store your fuel safely and closed! There will be safe fuel stations placed around the property. They will be marked and easy to find. If you want to spin fire, we encourage you to use one of these stations! (If you are a theme camp who would like to host a station, please contact [email protected]) • All fire performers must have a safety. Find a responsible spotter when you play with fire. • Spotters must have a fire blanket or appropriate material to use as a fire blanket. (Wet towels ARE NOT sufficient) • If you see someone spinning without a spotter/safety, tell them to put it out! It is your civic responsibility to keep yourself and others safe. Volunteer Opportunity: Fire Safety Fire Safety welcomes all volunteers. We do not require any specific skills, other than a willingness to serve the community and help keep us all safe. You can sign up for a Fire Patrol and patrol the burn helping to make sure fire is used safely. This is the first step to getting involved with Fire Safety, and is the gateway to other activities. In order to take a patrol, you need to be trained on Euphoria radio protocols. You can get this training by attending a training session for Rangers or Tranquility Base, or you can join us for a Fire Safety training (which is really the most fun of the options). If you have any questions, visit: www.euphoriaburn.com/teams/firesafety If you decide not to have a safety, well…you didn’t really need eyebrows anyway. 35 The Law & Law Enforcement We have few rules at Euphoria, but you are responsible for abiding by all federal, state, and local laws. While law enforcement officials generally don’t come on site, we can’t stop them from doing so. If you do have an encounter with a law enforcement official while on-site, please let a Team Lead or Ranger know as soon as possible, but you are required to comply with all legal instructions from law enforcement. Know your rights, but be aware that law enforcement officials do have the same authority at Euphoria that they do anywhere else. If a police officer requests to The drinking age at Euphoria is 21, just enter your home (tent or RV) you may request to see their warrant, unless they have probable cause for a like anywhere else. You must ID everyone search (typically, if a police officer can see, hear, or you serve to ensure they are 21 or older. smell evidence of criminal activity, then they are If you are caught serving to minors, you considered to have probable cause.) The more steps will no longer be allowed to serve alcohol you take to make your tent or RV private (keeping and may be ejected from the event. door shut, locking your door or tent when you are not in it, making sure the windows and/or blinds are closed, etc.) the more expectation of privacy you have against an unwarranted search. You do have the constitutional right to not consent to a search. If they search you or your belongings anyway, do not resist the search, but you may have valid grounds later to challenge the legality of the search. If you do give consent to a search of your person, car, tent, RV, etc., you generally give up your rights to challenge the search as being unconstitutional. If someone in your camp is arrested, that does not necessarily constitute the right to search other tents or RVs in the area with no evidence of criminal activity, but again, do not resist the officers - simply make it known you do not consent to the search. Remember, I’m a survival guide writer, not an attorney, so please consult an Remember, kids, cops don’t attorney instead of relying on anything I have to say. listen to safewords! Alcohol Volunteer Opportunity: Tranquility Base Tranquility Base is a space in which participants can reground during the Burn. This space is meant for those who may need an environment or space in which to better acclimate, adjust, or recenter. Whether you’re arriving home for the first time, or freshly repacked from the ashes of burns gone by, our space is open to those who have need. The Burn environment offers a wealth of stimulus input, a veritable flood of the senses. These are often very transformative experiences. We are here to assist those who are in need of a calm, grounded space in which to integrate being home. For those interested in assisting us in offering safe space within our community, please email [email protected]. We have need for volunteers at Tranquility Base! Onsite training will be held at 6pm on Thursday & Friday, location to be announced. http://euphoriaburn.com/team/tranquilitybase I’m not actually an attorney, I just play one on TV. 36 Participate In Euphoria So much to do, so much to see, so much to create! There’s a billionty-one things to do at Euphoria. What will you experience? What will you create for others to experience? Theme Camps Theme camps are one of the key elements of burns; they provide activities and services for the community. Anyone can start a theme camp around whatever wacky ideas or activities they wish to; some of Euphoria’s theme camps have been around since the beginning, and some have been around since the last burn. For many people, music and dancing are an integral part of their burn experience, and sound camps are where they get their fix. Sound camps must pre-register and are carefully placed to ensure minimal sound leakage to the areas surrounding the burn. You may not have amplified sound without pre-registration and approval by the sound team, who also monitor sound levels throughout the event to keep the music going and the county sheriff from getting upset! Moreover, the level of sound you are allowed to have may be limited - simply being placed or approved for placement at a particular location is not, in and of itself, approval to run sound at a particular level. For many theme camps without amplified sound, registration is optional. All registered theme camps (with or without sound) will be assigned campsites by the Placement Team. You will be able to view a list of the camps via the Euphoria website. All Theme Camps are required to review their camp sites before departure and ensure that they “leave no trace.” This includes the removal of any marking tape, stakes, signs, or other materials used to mark placement - it is the responsibility of each Theme Camp to handle disposal of these items. Pocket Guide For a complete guide to all the things happening at Euphoria, whether they’re run by the burn, individuals, or theme camps, check out the Euphoria Pocket Guide! This guide will be published online on the Monday of burn week so you can print it out or save it to your phone and have it for the burn. Also, we will have an app! Download before the burn, though, as you may not have signal on-site. Radical Exclusion becomes much easier with a wall. 37 Consent Some burns refer to consent as the eleventh principle, but the ten principles are intended to be mutable and debatable, and consent isn’t either of those things. So we’ll just say it: People have boundaries. You will respect the rights of others to consent or not consent to your actions in their personal space, body, or possessions. • If someone is violating your personal boundaries, communicate with those around you. Ask for help. Almost all burners are good people, and will help you if you run into someone that won’t take no for an answer. If you need more help, find a Ranger or anyone wearing a radio. • Only you are in charge of your boundaries. No one else can dictate what they should be. • You MUST ask before photographing, filming, or in any way recording anyone on any media. If you do so and they ask you to stop, you must do so, and erase any recording you have made of them. • Note: There will be “No Photography” wristbands available at Connexus for those who don’t wish to be photographed or filmed. This is an explicit NO and you should simply not photograph or film them. For anyone not wearing a wristband, YOU STILL MUST ASK. • Show respect for other participants by not interfering with their art, selfexpression, or activities. • You are responsible for your own experience. If someone’s being obnoxious near you, that’s their right unless they break burn rules. If they’re being obnoxious TO you non-consensually, that’s not OK. • If you violate others’ consent, you will be either escorted out of the burn or, if you have broken the law, you will be turned over to the appropriate law enforcement authorities. It will not be tolerated. You must ask people before you go in for a hug, a kiss, or any sort of touch, and you must respect their answer. Pleading, coercion, and emotional blackmail are not acceptable. No means no. Silence means no. A clear yes is necessary to touch people or cross their personal boundaries. Please bear in mind sobriety is needed for informed consent; if the other person is drunk, you can always hook up once you’re sober. YES MEANS YES. NO MEANS NO. SILENCE IS NOT CONSENT. “Still Don’t Shit On The Coffee Table” – Michael Harrison. 38 Leave No Trace LNT (Leave No Trace) is everyone’s job. There is a superdedicated team, known as the MOOP (Matter Out Of Place) fairies, because they wear fairy wings as they work, wandering the event, passing out trash bags and reminding our community that we should all Leave No Trace. They do and will pick up MOOP that people leave behind, but their main job is NOT to clean up after messy burners. Instead, they try to keep people from making a mess in the first place and educating people about what MOOP truly is. The best way to help them is to not leave any MOOP, and clean up any MOOP you see as you run around the burn; many people carry a plastic sack to pick up MOOP everywhere they go. LNT is everyone’s job at Euphoria. If you’d like to volunteer to help with the organized LNT effort, you can find LNT's tent in the “Downtown” area, near Connexus and Rangers. http://euphoriaburn.com/teams/LNT Volunteer Opportunity: Lamplighters Lamplighters brings the most precious gift of all to the burn: the gift of light. At dusk, they gather at the Lamplighters Chapel, donning ceremonial robes of red and black, symbolizing the fire and light that emanates from each individual as they bring their gifts to the burn: Illumination. Navigation. Celebration. Slowly, deliberately, they pace the roads and paths of Euphoria, casting light in their wake so that the citizens of our city may find their way in the darkness. More info? Visit http://Euphoriaburn.com/teams/lamplighters . MOOP Fairies are dead sexy! (No need to riot, ladies, there’s plenty more MOOP Fairies to go around) 39 Art There will be a huge variety of art created and brought to Euphoria by your fellow Burners to share with everyone, including music, dance, crafts, workshops, costumes, visual pieces, and more. Many of these projects are more than just pretty to look at; many are interactive and designed for Participation! Come experience these unique projects, or radically express yourself by creating your own. Fire effects, decorated vehicles, lasers, lights, and/or huge sound systems can be part of your art experience. Be sure to read the relevant portions of the Safety & Legal sections and to contact the Euphoria leadership if you are planning to bring an art project. Hey Artists! If you have a Funded Art Project or have registered your Independent Project for Placement, please be sure to check the placement map. Your project location will be marked onsite. We’ll be reaching out to all artists ahead of time. There will be additional maps at Connexus for reference where you can find your placement information and get help setting up your project if needed. Also, if you’re a Funded Artist, have Connexus radio someone from the Art Team to come meet you. We have shiny things to hand you! Art Strolls Introduced at Euphoria 2015 and we’ll be continuing the tradition this year. There will be a tour on both Friday and Saturday starting at 2:00 PM EST. The stroll will cover the in-depth history and lore of each project. Meeting at Connexus, the Strolls will be conducted by volunteers and include all of the Funded Art, Effigy, Temple, and Independent Registered Art. The strolls could take a couple hours to complete. “Art is what you can get away with”-Andy Warhol 40 Funded Art This year our burn organization and community has sponsored 11 projects with about $5,000 in funding. For more information on these funded art projects, you can check out the Art Fundraiser page on the Euphoria Burn website. Do you want to have your art sponsored? Fundraising is wrapped up for Euphoria 2016, but we’d love to see your artsy awesome at a future burn! Be sure to subscribe to The Alchemist and to watch the website and Facebook groups for more information. Your art project DOES NOT have to be funded to come to the Burn. Funded Art Scavenger Hunt Building off of the successful Scavenger Hunts from burns past, this Euphoria gives you an opportunity to find Exclusive Swag. Your quest: Discover the hidden location of Swag at the Funded Art Projects. Swag Awesomeness: Community Created Pet Rocks! They are all unique snowflakes and include a wide range of adorable / interesting / offputting arts! Check the map at Connexus to see where all of the Funded Art pieces will be installed to start your expedition. Other details will come as the Burn gets closer, so stay tuned to the Funded Artist Blogs or Alchemy Facebook group. Don’t forget to tag photos of your finds on Instagram with #euphoriaburnart and add @flashpointart for updates on art coming to a Georgia burn near you! I left some art in the portapotties. 41 Art Cars / Mutated Vehicles An Art Car (or Mutant Vehicle) is any kind of vehicle that is intended to move people around Euphoria rather than to remain parked for the duration of the event. If you plan to bring an Art Car to Euphoria, you must register the vehicle with the Department of Mutant Vehicles. Be sure to indicate whether your Art Car design includes fire effects or amplified sound, and include a photo or detailed plans and drawings of your Art Car. Prior to being authorized to operate around Euphoria, all Art Cars must be inspected by the necessary Team Lead(s). Inspections will be held Thursday through Saturday at Connexus, between 12:00PM and 4:00PM on each of those days. Art Cars MUST be decorated completely. Art Car drivers must abide by the citywide speed limit of 5mph. All of these rules also apply to dirt bikes, scooters, carts other than those utilized by volunteers on-duty, and motorcycles. Art Car Safety • Art cars must have working brakes, steering, and lights (lights optional if daytime-only vehicle) • All Art Cars operating outside of daylight hours must have appropriate lighting. • You may not operate a vehicle at Euphoria while you are intoxicated. There will be no tolerance for intoxicated driving or reckless driving; we will take the keys after your first offense. • If you violate Euphoria's speed and light regulations, you will receive only one warning. If a Team Lead has to intervene after your first warning for violating a speed or light regulation, we will follow you to your campsite and take away the keys to the vehicle. All rules of the road (from Page 30) must be followed in addition to these art car rules. Looking for the rave? Stop at Connexus and they’ll direct you to Center Camp…Live DJs 24 hours a day. 42 BURN NIGHT Each year, members of the community design the effigy, the focal point of our city. This year’s effigy team is led by Keith Prossick, Robert Dukes, and Stefanie Roberts. The winning design is pre-built before the event and assembled the weekend before the burn on-site; many members of the community name their first sight of the effigy as one of the most anticipated moments of their burn. No pictures of the effigy are allowed prior to the burn, as most people enjoy the surprise. The effigy is a focal point, a gathering place and venue for events and shenanigans. The effigy will be closed to access after noon or so for burn prep. Burn night will begin with fire conclave, which starts at approximately 9:30 PM (or a little later if there are safety concerns to address), at the base of the effigy. Be there early! Conclave lasts approximately 15-20 minutes, and the effigy will burn immediately after. As the crowd gathers, a perimeter forms, a human chain of voliunteers standing shoulder to shoulder with their back to the effigy. They’re not here to block your view, but as a safety precaution. The effigy burns at literally thousands of degrees…those guys in the fire suits (also volunteers!) aren’t wearing those for fun. The perimeter helps keep the circle clear for fire safety to manage the fire, for conclave to perform, and keeps people from getting pushed forward to where they are uncomfortable or, worse, injured. Volunteer Opportunity: Fire Conclave Conclave is a group of fire performers that unite in honor of the Burn. Just before our Effigy is brought to life Saturday night, Lamplighters bring fire to the performers to begin this fiery ceremony. This ritual is a gift of spirit and fire to the Effigy; to help build the energy needed to fully treasure our symbol for the community and its hard work. If you wish to be a part of conclave this year, there will be a mandatory meeting for all performers and safeties Saturday from 2-3pm at the Effigy. Here we will cover all the things you need to know and then some. Even if you are a pro it is still mandatory, no exceptions! Safety monitors are also needed, so sign up to be a safety and get a front row view of the fire! Visit http://euphoriaburn.com/teams/conclave1 for details. Indoctrinating a whole new county to our BIG BOOM. 43 BURN NIGHT After the Conclave performance, the pyrotechnics begin. Alchemy and Euphoria pride themselves on big booms and spectacular fire. The effigy will ignite in a firestorm of awesome, and 1000 burners will hoot and holler as the flame consumes this piece of art. Eventually, it will collapse, which usually ignites an additional round of cheering. Once the structure has cooled to the point where it has completely collapsed and is safe to approach without protective gear, the burndown team will give the ‘all clear’ and the perimeter will be dropped. At this point, the “Running of the Hippies” occurs; many participants sprint into the circle and run around the fire, screaming and dancing in a primal release of pent up energy. Just don’t be that guy who runs the opposite direction as everyone else…concussions are bad, m’kay? Volunteer Opportunity: Burn Perimeter The only thing more awesome than watching the effigy burn is watching the awesome looks on your fellow burners’ faces.“Working perimeter, being part of the crew that burns this structure down, is different. It’s truly participating in the burn, and not just experiencing it.” If we don’t have a fully staffed perimeter, the effigy doesn’t burn. This goes for the temple burn and art burns too. It’s the only way to be safe. Perimeter meets at 7pm at the Effigy! Soft perimeter starts at 730 and hard perimeter at 930. Join us! http://euphoriaburn.com/teams/perimeter Hey Eatonton, is that a gas pipeline exploding or is it just your new neighbors? 44 Temple The 2016 Euphoria temple team is led by Niki Austin, Kelly Wilcox, and Johnny Newell. The temple is a tradition at burns dating back to the 2000 Burning Man. David Best and his art crew were planning an art installation on the playa that year; when one of their close friends died in a tragic accident shortly before the burn, the installation became a memorial, a non-denominational yet sacred space for grief, reflection, and remembrance. It filled such a void that it became an instant tradition. There has been a Temple every year since; David Best being the lead artist for half of them, with the other Temples built by a wide range of artists. Most regional burns follow this tradition; many people attend burns to let go, to remember, to celebrate life and mourn those no longer with us, and the temple honors and holds space for that process. While the effigy burn is traditionally very celebratory, the temple burn is often more subdued. As people process the experience of the temple burn in different ways, we simply ask that participants be respectful of others at the temple, throughout the event and at the temple burn. While some regional burns follow the Burning Man tradition of burning the temple on Sunday night, Euphoria burns the temple Sunday morning (10am this year.) Please be respectful of others’ experiences during the temple burn. 45 Spontaneity In The Laboratory There’s lots of stuff going on in the Euphoria laboratory, and it’s always good to have a loose plan of what you want to see and do, but don’t forget to leave lots of room for experimentation. Once you’re on site, you’ll find that adventures happen, quests present themselves, and there’s always some crazy stuff that appears on no schedule. The Pocket Guide will contain many events hosted by camps, teams, and individuals, but we urge you to set out in search of adventure, and adventure will find you along the way. Make a new friend, do something you’ve never done before. Challenge yourself. Ride the chaos. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Make “Yes” your new favorite word, but don’t be afraid to say no if you need to. If you see something that looks cool, go over and join in. Srsly, “fuck your burn” is old and played out. Don’t even go there. 46 Exiting Euphoria All good things must come to an end, and the Temple is traditionally the last major event of the burn. While the burn is ‘officially’ open until Monday at noon to give theme camps and major art installations time to break down, it’s generally expected that most people will leave Sunday so that the hard work of breaking the city down and restoring it to the way it was when we arrived can take place. How can you make it easier for our teardown team if you’re not volunteering to help with teardown? It’s easy! The answer is: Do a detailed MOOP sweep of your camping area before you leave. Pack out everything you packed in. There are no dumpsters at the Lavender Farm….bring it home with you. Keep in mind if you are a registered theme camp and you leave a mess, it will affect your placement for following years. Many burners also MOOP sweep the surrounding areas & roads. Lost And Found If you misplace something during the burn, Lost and Found is usually at Connexus during the day and moved to the Ranger station at night. After Connexus closes on Sunday, check with a team lead or Ranger to find out where Lost and Found has been moved to. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS OUR FIRST YEAR IN NEW LOCATION. THE CONDITION OF THE LAND WILL PLAY A MAJOR PART IN WHETHER WE CAN RETURN FOR FUTURE YEARS. HELP US MAKE THIS OUR FOREVER HOME! We hope you had fun. GTFO. 47 Euphoria All The Time Part of what makes Euphoria and Alchemy so awesome is that they’re not just a festival, where you go home and have to wait until next year. They’re part of a community. You can live by the principles as best you can every day, not just while you’re at the burn. You don’t ever have to wait for a burn to get your burn on. Alchemy and Euphoria are the two primary events produced by Flashpoint Artists Initiative, our non-profit parent organization. We promote and support art and artists throughout the southeastern U.S. Follow the FAI Facebook page to learn of other local art events we’re involved with. Also, we’re always looking for volunteers to help between events. You could lead a team, help with board committees, or find dozens of other ways to help make future events happen! If you want to get more involved, subscribe to The Alchemist (the biweekly e-newsletter), follow our Facebook page at Flashpoint Artists Initiative, and join the Alchemy and Euphoria Facebook groups. Drink the kool-aid….drink the kool-aid. 48 Euphoria Leadership Euphoria, along with its sibling event Alchemy, are both events of Flashpoint Artists Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to the arts in Georgia and the southeast. Our Board of Directors is elected by the community and oversees the entire organization. The Events Committee is selected by the board for a year-long term to produce Alchemy and Euphoria. Events Committee members (known as ELTs) are typically selected from those who have succeeded in leading teams or projects for the burns. There are two Event Leads, in charge of managing the overall burn., and four Department Leads,, one for each department. Each ELT has 1-2 assistants to help manage their workload. Each Dept. Lead supervises 8-10 teams or projects, each overseen by a team or task lead and 1-4 co-leads and assistant leads that are selected for each burn. All of these positions are completely unpaid. Each team lead or co-lead, ELT, assistant ELT, and board member puts in literally hundreds of hours to prepare for each event. For ELTs in particular, the workload to organize each burn is the equivalent of a second full-time job. So when you see one of these people, give them a hug or a highfive and thank them for what they do. And when things go wrong, sure, you’re allowed to be frustrated, but realize they’re participants just like you are, and they’re doing the best they can to make it all run smoothly for everyone. 2016 Flashpoint Artists Initiative Board of Directors: Rebecca McConnell Rea, Dusty Graham, Michelle Waymire, Tunna Kerosene, Anna Stroup 2016 Events Committee: Event Leads: Ash Monogue and Dusty Graham. It is through the hard work of the Board of Directors, events committee, team leads, volunteers, theme camp organizers, artists, dreamers, action hippies, musicians, and burners of all stripes that this magical city has risen in this newfound forest, to burn as a beacon of fire and light. There are no spectators here, only participants. Euphoria is only what you make of it. See you all there!
