Scholars Program - Student Mentor Bios: #1: Hello, scholars! I am a sophomore Human Development major in the College of Community and Public Affairs. I am from New Rochelle, New York, in lower Westchester County. I am hoping to pursue teaching with the ultimate goal of studying and working in the field of education policy. Beyond academics, I am on the e-board of College Democrats, a great organization to get politically involved whether or not you share the views of the Democratic party! I also play for the club soccer team, a fun way to stay active and make friends. Within the Scholars program I am a member of the academic committee as well as the Pen Pals program. In my spare time, I like to play intramural sports, hang out with my friends, and either watch some of my favorite reality TV or cop shows and even binge-watch different programs on Netflix. Congratulations on picking Binghamton and welcome to the Scholars Program! It’s truly a great place and I can’t wait to meet all of you! #2: Hello incoming scholars. I’m from Levittown, Long Island and am a mechanical engineering major in the Watson school. I really enjoy math and physics but I am not the greatest writer as you can probably tell. Outside of scholars I am part of the outdoors club and enjoy all things outdoors including camping, hiking and other things of that nature. I also volunteer for habitat for humanity and play intramural football. In my free time I enjoy playing sports like football, volleyball and frisbee with my friends and going on runs throughout the nature preserve. When I’m not doing things outdoors, I like to play video games or watch sporting events especially the Patriots. Congrats on choosing the Binghamton Scholars program I look forward to meeting all of you next semester. #3: Hello Scholars! I’m a computer science major from rural Tully, NY. My love for my major extends well outside the classroom; in addition to coding my own personal side-projects for fun and practice, I regularly attend HackBU meetings and enjoy participating in Hackathons and other coding competitions. I also study computer vision in the Freshman Research Immersion program. Next semester, I’ll be sharing my love of computer science as an undergraduate tutor. When I’m not sitting in class or in front of a screen, I spend my time bowling, reading, or listening to and making music; my favorite genre is hip hop. I rap with the Freestyle Rap Club and with a local hip hop company called Project DCX, often performing shows on campus. On a side note, I was once an avid runner and bass clarinet player as well. I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you when you arrive! #4: Hi, incoming freshmen! I’m from Oceanside, NY. I’m currently a student in the Watson school of Engineering with a prospective major of Systems science and Industrial engineering. I’d like to think that I also have a knack for mathematics and writing, too. As for extracurriculars, I was the social VP of Broome Hall student government my freshman year. I participated in Peace Action, a discussion club that advocates non-violent political action, and was a member of the Rainbow Pride Union, one of Bing’s social equality clubs on campus. Outside academics, you’d probably catch me listening to tunes, because I identify as a indie aficionado but I’m really just a music snob. Or you’d probably catch me watching IMBD’s lowest rated movies of all time for some reason I can’t explain. I’m pretty decent at baking and I like to dabble at cooking every once in awhile. Anyway, congratulations for choosing Binghamton, and I can’t wait to meet you guys at the end of the summer! #5: Hey Scholars! I am from Tarrytown, New York and I'm currently majoring Environmental Studies and Political Science. I am the editor of the opinions section of our awesome campus newspaper, Pipe Dream. I love getting involved with social issues: I'm the president of Peace Action, a club that discusses and takes action on issues involving world peace. I also work with the Southern Tier Homeless Coalition, an amazing organization that is working to end homelessness in Broome county. I like to play music and jam, even though I’m not very good, so if you're musical at all come talk to me (Scholars band anyone?)! I also love to run, take photos, make awful puns and play board games. Congratulations on being accepted to BU and the Scholars program, it really is an incredible school and a great group of people. I can't wait to meet you all in August! #6: Hey everyone! I'm from Long Island and I'm a Biomedical Engineering major, but I also really enjoy drawing and painting. I like graphic design (I've designed t-shirts and Snapchat Geofilters) and I like sneaking into the Fine Arts building to play the piano in between classes. I'm a pescatarian, but I practically live off of granola bars, berries, and ice cream anyway. Still, I really love cooking and baking desserts, I love the snow and cold weather, and I love nature and plants - I have about twelve in my room, but to be honest, most are on the verge of death. I'm a member of the Pen Pals Program as well as an engineering society, and I'm also on our program's community service committee. I'm excited you chose to join the Scholars program, and I hope you love it here as much as I do! #7: Hey guys! I'm an Industrial and Systems Engineering major in the Watson School of Engineering. I'm from Brooklyn and love everything the city has to offer, but really like the outdoorsy feel of Binghamton. I'm a member of a couple of Engineering Societies on campus and I’d like to think that I am pretty involved in the Scholars Program. I am in the Scholars Community Service Committee and Pen Pals, a club where we write letters to local fourth graders. Aside from schoolwork, I like to stay active by swimming. Over the summer I'm a lifeguard like every other college aged student. I bake to destress and do it all the time, so watch out for some treats. Congrats on choosing Binghamton, I hope you love it here as much as I do! I can’t wait to meet you all! #8: Hi everyone! Congrats on being inducted into the Scholars program, and welcome to your new home here at Bing! I am from Nassau County on Long Island, and I currently am a biology major, on the pre med track, in the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences. I am enrolled in the FRI (Freshman Research Immersion) Program, which is a great program for anyone interested in getting an early start to lab work and research here on campus. Despite being a science major, I also play the violin in the university’s symphony orchestra, which is a ton of fun. In my free time I love hanging out with friends, or grabbing a milkshake from night owl (nowl for short) and binge watching House. I am more than willing to answer any questions you all have, whether it’s about music, research, or school in general. I can’t wait to meet everyone in the fall! #9: Hi guys, welcome to the Scholars Program! I am from East Meadow, New York and I am a Psychology major with an Applied Behavior Analysis concentration, following the pre-health track. I love working with people with disabilities, and am a member of multiple clubs on campus including Boys and Girls Club where I go downtown to volunteer with children from the surrounding Binghamton community, and Student Ambassadors where we speak to potential incoming freshmen about Binghamton. Next year I am excited to begin working as a campus tour guide and serve as Vice President of Autism Speaks University. I also love exploring new places on campus, going to fitness classes, and hanging out with friends. I am very involved in the Scholars Program and would love to show you all the great things it has to offer, as well as the ins and outs of this awesome university! I can’t wait to meet you all! #10: Hi everyone! I am very eager to be your student mentor! I'm currently a human development major in the College of Community and Public Affairs. I love helping others and I can't wait to show you around our campus. Academics are a priority for me but I make time to have fun and enjoy a variety of activities. I volunteer in a baking/charity club through Hillel on campus called Challah for Hunger. I'm also a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and Women in Business. I love to stay active and regularly go to Zumba and other gym classes. I am passionate about traveling and studied abroad in London this past winter. I am also part of the Scholars Community Service Committee and have visited soup kitchens and helped participate in other service projects. I can't wait to welcome you all and help you grow to love Binghamton as much as I do!
