Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish Sunday of Divine Mercy April 23, 2017 Page two Sunday of Divine Mercy PASTOR'S CORNER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I invite you to attend our Divine Mercy Liturgy at 3:00 p.m. today led by Father Zachary. Divine Mercy is the theme of today’s Gospel according to John. (John 20: 19-31) Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ came and stood in the midst of his disciples. Twice he said to them, “Peace be with you.” He showed them his hands that the nails had pierced, and his side that the soldier’s lance had stabbed. Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Our Lord died upon the Cross and rose from the dead to free us from our sins and bring us new life. Jesus commanded his disciples to forgive. This is the first and most important mandate that he gives them. For almost 2000 years, bishops and priests have continued to bestow this great gift of the Holy Spirit on those who cry out for forgiveness and healing of their sins. It is a true blessing to give the forgiveness of the Lord to people in the Sacrament of Penance (Confession/Reconciliation). Like Thomas, may we put our faith in our Lord and our God who is so merciful. As the Lord has forgiven us, may we also forgive. Are You Interested in Becoming Catholic? OPEN HOUSE Monday, April 24 7:30 p.m. Parish Center We welcome all adults who • Have never been baptized • Have been baptized in another Christian tradition • Have been baptized Catholic and wish to receive Eucharist and Confirmation For more info call RCIA Director Jerry Periolat at 714-642-8414. RECYCLE April 29-30 WITNESS TALKS FOR TIME, TALENT & TREASURE The Stewardship Ministry Team is starting a new and exciting monthly campaign that would feature members of a ministry or a parishioner sharing their stories of time, talent and treasure and why being involved in the parish is important to them. We hope this campaign encourages many parishioners to become more engaged and involved in the parish and Catholicism. At least once a month, we would like a ministry or parishioner to briefly tell their story of time, talent or treasure at the end of a Sunday Mass. Also, we would like to feature their story and/or ministry in the parish bulletin. Here are the ideas we’d like to hear about: • • • What is your ministry and/or time, talent or treasure? What is the result/impact of your ministry and/or time, talent or treasure? What does it mean to you personally? We’d love for the parish to learn more about what you or your ministry is doing and highlight it. For more info contact Jerry Clarke at [email protected] or 714-319-7956. Hours are Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bring your newspapers, cardboard, aluminum cans, CRV glass, plastic bottles (NO caps) to the bin in the parking lot. Please crush plastic bottles so more will fit into bags. Do not leave recyclable items when the bin is not present. BENEDICTION CANCELLED Wednesday, April 26 Due to First Communion Rehearsal FAMILIES OF NAZARETH Trust In God’s Mercy God can descend into the mud to transform someone into a saint. —Andre Daigneault, The Way of Imperfection, p. 9 April 23, 2017 Page three Celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday, April 23 3:00 p.m. In the Church The Holy Hour in celebration of Divine Mercy will include: • Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament • Chaplet of the Divine Mercy • Scripture Reading and Message on the Divine Mercy of God • Silent Adoration • Benediction • Veneration of a Relic of St. Faustina Origin of Divine Mercy Sunday Mankind’s need for the message of Divine Mercy took on dire urgency in the 20th Century when civilization began to experience an “eclipse of the sense of God” and therefore to lose the understanding of the sanctity and inherent dignity of human life. In the 1930’s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. Saint John Paul II explains: This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, the fact that God is mercy — the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Peter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the universal Church. (Memory and Identity, 2005) St. Faustina’s Diary records 14 occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday) be observed, for example: My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. … Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. … It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary, no. 699) On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday. —www.usccb.org Mother and Child Shower Justice and Peace Ministry will host an “April Shower” to support the three shelters for pregnant women listed on the Diocese of Orange website: Casa Teresa, Mary’s Shelter and Precious Life Shelter.
