BURNING QUESTIONS (THAT WE HAVE HEARD - so far)
• How do I login? What do I do once I am in the portal?
• What is the difference between formative and
summative assessments/tasks?
• How are scores calculated? Why did you have to
change the scoring? Why can’t we have As, Bs & Cs?
• What does the grade mean? How worried should I be
that my child does not have a 3 yet?
• Can my child get a 4?
• What about the Honor Roll?
• How are Habits of Work calculated? Will my child’s
score be lowered if he/she is quiet and doesn’t raise
his/her hand in class?
SCREENCAST OBJECTIVES
By the end of this screencast, participants will:
• Have answers to these burning questions;
• Understand how to access your student’s information
using the JumpRope portal;
• Understand how the information you see in the portal
reflects what your child knows and can do;
• Have had an opportunity to ask additional questions
and hear answers about the use of the portal.

NAVIGATING THE PORTAL: WELCOME SCREEN
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL - “CURRENT GRADE” LINK
From the login page, choose the “Current Grades” button to take
you to a page with a summary of your child’s current grades.
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL: CURRENT GRADES
Shows overall score in the class to this point
in time. This score is a reflection of the
content mastery score and does not include
the Habits of Work score.
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL: LOOKING AT CURRENT GRADES
These scores reflect the Content Mastery scores for each class. Click on the arrow
to the left of the class name to expand that section. Expanding allows you to see
the details of the class all the way down the the specific assignment and
assessment scores.
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL: OVERALL CONTENT & HOW
SCORES
Click on the small gray triangle to the left
of the class, 2 folders appear.
The scores for each reflects the
overall score for content and Habits of
Work (HOW) for a class
The 100% beside the overall content
mastery folder is reminding us that
the overall course score is based
entirely on content. HOW of work are
not part of the overall course score.
CONTENT MASTERY FOLDER
Opening the content mastery folder gives you a list of the broader graduation standards
that have been worked on in the class thus far in the year.
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL:
WHAT’S IN THE CONTENT MASTERY FOLDER?
GRADUATION STANDARD
ELT
’s
Opening a graduation standard folder gives you a list of the Essential Learning Targets
(ELTs) that students have been working on.
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL:
WORK DONE TO DEMONSTRATE PROFICIENCY
When you expand the Essential Learning Target (ELT) folder, you will
see scores on each of the assignments, activities and assessments
that students have completed. A student’s score on each ELT is
calculated from his/her performance on the tasks under that ELT.
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL:
FORMATIVE & SUMMATIVE TASKS
Formative means that this was a task or assignment that students were
given to help them form their understanding or to practice a skill. Formative
tasks are assigned a very small weight or value (.01) because they reflect a
child’s learning and practice.
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL:
FORMATIVE & SUMMATIVE TASKS
Summative means that this was a piece of work completed that was meant to show
the teacher exactly what the student has learned and is able to demonstrate for
that target. These tasks are given greater weight (1.0) than the formative tasks
because they reflect his/her grasp at the end of a unit, after practice.
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL:
WHAT ARE THE SCORES?
The score for each Essential Learning Target is a calculation of the scores on tasks and
activities measuring students’ developing content knowledge and skills. Teachers score
tasks and activities 1 means not meeting the target, 2 means partially meeting the
target, 2.5 means exhibiting a strong foundation of learning and approaching the
target, 3 means meeting the target, and 4 means exceeding the target. NAVIGATING THE PORTAL:
CALCULATING SCORES
Scores for each ELT are calculated using Power Law. Power Law is a
calculation that looks at the trend of the scores on an ELT over time. If a
child’s scores on tasks in an ELT are improving, the overall score will be
higher.
NAVIGATING THE PORTAL:
CALCULATING SCORES - POWER LAW
JumpRope has been set to calculate scores using a mathematical function called the
Power Law. It is a time-based calculation that takes into account the trend in student
scores. In other words, the score you see for each learning target is what your student is
most likely to score on the next activity according to his or her performance to date.

TO GET THE OVERALL COURSE SCORE
• all ELTs for a standard are averaged • all standards for the course are averaged to the get the overall score
WHEN THINKING ABOUT THE GRADE, REMEMBER:
• The score is calculated and recalculated over the
length of the course (which is either semester or year).
• There are multiple opportunities to demonstrate what
they know and can do.
• At the beginning of the year, there are more formative
assessments because students are building their
learning.
• Scores are calculated using Power Law.
MISSING WORK – 2 Ways
From the login page, choose the “Grade Alerts” button (you can
also choose the “Grade Alerts” tab at the top of the page.
Finding Missing Work – 2 ways
From the login page, choose the “Grade Alerts” button (you can
also choose the “Grade Alerts” tab at the top of the page.
READING THE MISSING WORK LIST
When you click on this tab, it will take you to a list of tasks that are
currently ungraded for the student. These are listed from the most recent
to the oldest task(s).
READING THE MISSING WORK LIST
Use the email link on the left to send an email to the teacher to check
which tasks must be made up. Because some of the assignments listed
are formative tasks, the teacher may not need them to be made up.
Another way to check missing work
When looking at the “Current Grade” tab, there is a column showing the
number of missing tasks. You can “click” on the number to expand down
to see what is missing.
HABITS OF WORK
To see scores on the Habits of Work targets,
click the gray triangle to the left of the Overall
Habits of Work Mastery folder.
HABITS OF WORK & STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS
To see the tasks that have been completed that have shown progress on a
habits of work target, click on the triangle next to the target.
