When you hear the word Chanukah what images come
to mind? Candles? Menorah? Gelt? Presents? Most of
us know the story of Chanukah well – a triumphant tale
of right over might, the few withstanding and ultimately
defeating the many. We also know the story is connected
with the Temple in Jerusalem. The word Chanukah
means dedication, and reminds us of that pivotal moment
in Jewish history when the Hashmoneans (Maccabees)
rededicated the desecrated Temple during the second
century BCE. In Hebrew, the Temple is Beit Hamikdash,
lit. “The Holy House.” The expression used when Jews
dedicate a house, any house, is chanukat habayit, and at
Beth Am, this holiday is particularly potent since our very
first Shabbat service was conducted on Chanukah, 1974,
now forty-one years ago.
This year, the notion of rededication has personal
resonance for my family and me as well. In 2012,
Miriam and I were privileged to purchase a home at 2446
Eutaw Place, just across from the shul. The home had
previously been owned for many years by long-time Beth
Am member Marsha “Chickie” Grayson and, to this day,
we often refer to it simply as: “Chickie’s House.” What
we’ve learned, though, is that the house has a long and
proud history beginning in 1895. During the past 120
years, 2446 was home not only to Chickie but also to
families by the name of Kuhst, Howser, Benesch, Yewell
and more.

CANTOR’S CORNER
STEPPING UP ..STEPPING BACK OR BOTH?
Cantor Ira Greenstein
Warning to all: this is a somewhat
narrow topic, but one that baffles me
and on which I have taken a position for
myself.
There is a lot of choreography in a
Jewish service and periodically I comment
on the rationale behind it, to help inform
us about what we see and perhaps
experience in services. I find the variations
in use intriguing, but there remains one
nearly-universal practice I have concluded
is likely wrong. That is: Why do we take
three steps back and forward for BOTH
the start of the Amidah (Adoniai sefatai
tiftach…) and the end (Oseh shalom…)?
And then, why do it (backward, bowing to
sides and front, then forward) at the end
of the Kaddish, on the same Hebrew Oseh
shalom...?
For those of you who are still reading
the article, I assure you I am serious.
Here is what has made sense to me.
When we recite the Amidah, following
strategic preparation for the experience,
we begin by taking three steps forward to
the Sovereign, to connect and converse
personally. At the end of the Amidah, we
take three steps back (sometimes bowing
to each side and forward, a practice
that is also mentioned in Isaac Klein’s
authoritative A Guide to Jewish Religious
Practice), as is a traditional practice when
disengaging with any sovereign.Even John
Adams did this when in the English court,
as reenacted in the TV mini-series a few
years back. So far, so good. BUT why
do we FIRST take three steps back at the
start before moving forward, and then retake three steps forward at the very end
after we move backward? I see no logic.
I definitely see the pragmatism, in row
seating, of having to take the initial three
steps back to have the ROOM to step
forward (and reverse at the end). Given
this, I personally like to step into aisles
or in the back when I daven for myself, so
the issue becomes moot and no longer
distracts me.
So, I checked with some knowledgeable
sources in the family, who found the
question intriguing and then they, in turn,
checked with Rabbi Jay Goldmintz, Ed.D.,
a respected educator who formerly served
as headmaster of the Ramaz Upper School
in Manhattan. He is also the commentary
author of the Koren Ani Tefilla Siddur. The
feedback is that the initial three steps
forward are what is essential, along with
the final three steps back. The secondary
directional stepping is “inessential.” Klein
(see above) only references taking the
steps forward at the start and backward at
the end.
However, when Jewish minds begin
to think, one can never be too sure.
According to a further explanation, the

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE
Julie Gottlieb
On Yom Kippur 5775, Scott Zeger
described a vision for Beth Am that
featured new bathrooms, a reliably
functioning elevator, and fresh seats in the
sanctuary. While compelling, that is not
precisely Beth Am’s stated vision. We are
“a spiritual home for learning, prayer, and
advancing social justice.”
about our financial and space needs. We are
examining multi-year financial projections
and reviewing refined architectural concepts,
including the costs and trade-offs associated
with different options. The Board also will
adopt a Campaign goal, setting the stage for
the next phase of the Campaign, during which
all congregants will be asked to participate.
Achieving our vision - attracting
and retaining talented clergy and staff
who work creatively with and for our
congregation; having a building where
Beth Am’ers of all generations can
comfortably learn and enjoy life-cycle
events and community activities; where
congregants can worship in spaces that
are conducive to reflection and prayer;
and where we can plan, participate, and
partner with the larger community toward
social justice -- requires resources. That’s
why the Campaign for Beth Am has two
critical goals: establish an endowment
and renovate and/or add to our historic
building.
A critical part of the Board’s process is
hearing from the congregation. How do you
see our needs? What will best serve Beth Am’s
families for the next forty years? Please share
your views with us. I hope you participated
in the online survey that was available in
November. And I encourage you to join me
and members of the Board at a meeting for
the entire congregation from 11 AM – 1 PM
on Sunday, December 6th at Beth Am. We
will share key background information and
ask for your reactions to options for investing
the Campaign proceeds. The Board’s process
is not complete without you!
On Yom Kippur 5776, I told you that
the Campaign has raised pledges of over
$8.1 million during its initial phase from
approximately 90 Beth Am member
families. The Board of Trustees has
embarked on a process to decide how
to invest these funds and the eventual
proceeds from the Campaign.
The
Board is engaging in focused discussion
of the values that should drive decisions
4
The meeting will be followed by an
afternoon gathering across Eutaw Place at
the home of Rabbis Daniel and Miriam Burg,
whose house is celebrating its 120th birthday.
At the end of the day, we’ll celebrate the first
night of Chanukah together, and rededicate
ourselves to the future of Beth Am.
Please join us for both events on December
6th.
May we go from strength to strength
together!
CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING
Rabbi Kelley Gludt
The Jewish Discovery Lab of Beth Am
is up and running! We kicked it all off with
a jam-packed day of fun and learning,
including opportunities to catch up and
reconnect with one another, new and
returning faculty, and Rabbi Burg.
The Judaics curriculum this year will
focus on Shabbat, Biblical history and
life cycles for our third, fourth and fifth
grade students. Our second graders will
do an in-depth study of the holidays while
our sixth graders will go through B’nai
Mitzvah boot camp, learning all the things
about being a Jewish adult, including how
to wear a tallit, navigate the siddur and
chumash, lift and dress a Torah, say Kaddish,
and more. Our sixth and seventh graders
will also spend time in the community on
service learning/social justice projects.
They will pitch in at Whitelock Farm,
Gesher L’Torah, Weinberg Park and the
Children’s House at Johns Hopkins, just to
name just a few, delving into their Jewish
values along the way.
Kindergarten and first grade will be
introduced to the alef-bet while second
graders will learn to combine Hebrew
consonants and vowels. Our third and
fourth graders will focus on Hebrew
through core prayers of the Shabbat
morning service. Our fifth graders will
once again spend the year focusing on
Hebrew decoding by working one-onone with the madrichim (aides), catering to
individual language acquisition styles.
As always, Lab will be filled with special
events, including a field trip to the zoo,
an Israeli immigration simulation, postLab dinners, special holiday programming
and the Havdalah Sleepover. We will also
have the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat
together on the first Saturday of every
month and at a Friday night Kabbalat
Shabbat service and dinner.
Lab has been expanded through
Wednesday evening to allow for learning
opportunities for our older students.
Eighth graders will explore the Jewish
perspective on personal identity and
relationships, followed by a semester
on the Holocaust, including a trip to
the Holocaust Museum in Washington,
D.C. Our ninth and tenth graders will
investigate the history and geography of
Israel in preparation for Rabbi Burg’s unit
on developing a mature relationship with
our homeland. These students will also
learn some Modern Hebrew and will have
the good fortune of spending time with
this year’s amazing Shinshinim, Yuval and
Matan. In addition, they will gather and
preserve Baltimore and Beth Am’s rich
history through oral history projects.
With all the learning going on, 5776
promises to be an exceptional year!

Rabbi cont’d
You may know that 120 is a sort of
magic number in Jewish tradition; since it
marks the years of Moses’ life, we have a
wonderful tradition of saying to someone on
his/her birthday, Ad meah v’esrim, “may you
live to 120!” The afternoon and evening of
December 6, as we usher in this year’s festival
of Chanukah, we will rededicate our historic
home! You should have received a postcard
invitation to the open house celebration
which will commence at 1:00 and conclude
at 5:00 after lighting the chanukiah. So, after
attending an important informational session
about the Campaign for Beth Am, walk
across the street, have a drink and a nosh,
schmooze with Reservoir Hill neighbors and
rejoice in the vitality of Jewish life on Eutaw
Place. We look forward to celebrating with
you!
Cantor cont’d
Hafetz Hayyim – a revered Jewish authority
in the late 19th / early 20th century – in
his standard Mishnah Berurah, is said to
suggest that the extra steps help one to
prepare a little more (at least at the start –
no info on the end), and thereby become
part of the process. I must tell you, that
this rationale does not work for me.
Given this, there then seems NO reason
whatsoever for taking steps back, then
forward, when reciting Oseh shalom … at
the end of Kaddish. I suspect that people
simply mimic the process and just do it for
that line, again, out of habit … but that is
speculation. I know that I do not do it,
and never have. And at least one member
of my family also thinks my speculation
sounds about right.
Choose a practice, use it or not, but
hopefully know why.

While there are many ways to
give to Beth Am, we hope you
will consider supporting the
Synagogue’s missions by making a bequest to Beth Am in
your will or living trust.
Making a bequest allows you to
combine your financial planning
with philanthropy to make a lasting
investment in the future of our
congregation.
Contact your attorney to learn how you
can make a bequest to Beth Am.
“
When John and I
contemplated ‘estate
planning,’ of course we
wanted to provide for our
children and grandchildren.
But Beth Am also was like
family, and a legacy gift
was a painless way to
provide for it as well. All
we had to do was designate
the portion of our estate
to go to Beth Am when we
die. We won’t be around to
miss the money, and future
generations can benefit.”
