The Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God
Dear sisters and brothers of Holy Family,
Since Christmas was on Sunday this year, its octave day, the solemnity of the Blessed Vir
gin Mary, the Mother of God, also falls on a Sunday. Hence, there is no Sunday between
Christmas and this Solemnity, the day on which we usually celebrate the feast of the Holy Family
of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, our heavenly patrons, is transferred to December 30, a weekday. We
don’t need to worry about missing our heavenly patrons Feast since Mary is the Mother of the Holy
Family and when we celebrate our heavenly Mother’s Feast we are celebrating the Holy Family also.
Mary is the model for our faith journey. A lot of stressful things happened in Mary's life. To be found with
child only after betrothal, to deliver baby Jesus in a barn, to flee to Egypt, to stand at the foot of the crucified Je
sus etc. But she was not much stressed. St. Luke says that she kept everything in her heart. "Mary treasured all
these things and reflected on them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). God has a plan and her task was to work with God in carrying
it out. We also face global issues like war, terrorism, natural disasters, broken relationships, financial problems, health issues etc. We can take it peacefully if we take time to reflect on God's plan for the world and unite ourselves with God in
carrying it out.
As we welcome this New Year 2017 we reflect and thank God for all the blessings our loving God showered on us the past
year 2016. As a parish family, we have grown together in Christ as One Family of God. We are making good progress in
paying off our loan through our campaign and different fund raising programs. We started the new FTCM program in English and Spanish to grow deeper in our faith journey. Our new ACTS retreats helps us a lot in our spiritual renewal. We
welcomed a lot of new parishioners through our ‘New Parishioners Welcome’ Ministry; all our ministries especially the
Religious Education, Youth Ministry and Vincent De Paul are growing; we welcomed 2 new parish staff; we are almost
done with our new and beautiful parking lot. Let us thank God for all these amazing blessings and graces He showered on
us in the past year.
I thank you all for your prayers, support and great stewardship of sharing your time, talents and treasure for our parish family. With renewed Faith and enthusiasm let us look forward and welcome the New Year invoking the intercession of our
dear and blessed Mother in heaven.
Have a happy and blessed New Year! Fr. Sunny.
a nuestra familia parroquial.
Rev. Sunny.
THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE
The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people
of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation
of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face
turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We
are blessed by God’s own peace!
Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing,
which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the
image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to us and
God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving
kindness. by Mother, Juliana Ohamuo

amorosa y fiel.

Schedule and registration for FTCM for Spring 2017
now available
The Formation Toward Christian Ministry (FTCM) program seeks to develop the basic academic, spiritual and
critical reflection skills necessary for Catholic adults to
fully answer their Baptismal call to service. FTCM is
open to all adults who seek greater understanding of their
faith and is designed for those who are active in parish
ministry or discerning their call to ministry.
FTCM provides the theological content courses required
for Diocesan certification as a catechist. In addition,
FTCM is a pre-requisite for Catechetical Leadership preparation, Youth Ministry Leadership training, and Diocesan
certification as a liturgist. FTCM is a 108-clock hour process delivered over the course of three semesters. Classes
meet on weekday evenings or in all- day Saturday format,
depending on parish request. Each class session includes
prayer, content presentation and group dynamics. Each
semester also includes participation in a Day of Reflection
as a means to integrate content into daily living.
The 108 clock hours of FTCM consists of 90 hours of
courses and 18 hours of Days of Reflection. Course content includes the study of Scripture, Doctrinal Theology,
Liturgical Theology, Moral Theology, and Church History. For more information contact our CCE Office, 281499-4612 or online at www.archgh.org/oec/ftcm.

"We will be the happiest people in the world if we belong
to God, if we place ourselves at his disposal, if we let him
use us as he pleases. To be this happy, we must belong to
Jesus fully without reservation. He alone is worthy of our
love and our total surrender."
St Theresa of Calcutta
Pope Francis most memorable quotes in the form of
New Year’s resolutions: 1. Don’t gossip - it’s one of
our hobbies & also one of the most evil activities. 2. Finish your meals - no leftovers, please. 3. Make time for
others - tending to 1.2 billion members, Pope Francis
seems far too busy for anything else - but he makes time
to call, to write a handwritten note. 4. Choose the more
humble purchase - Pope Francis teaches against materialism. 5. Meet the poor in the flesh - the sick must be
cared for, those in prison must be visited. 6. Stop judging
others - Pope Francis condemns prejudice. 7. Befriend
those who disagree - “When leaders in various fields ask
me for my advice, my response is always the same, dialogue, dialogue.” 8. Make commitments, such as marriage - “Have the courage to ‘swim against the tide.’
Have the courage to be happy.” 9. Make it a habit to
‘ask the Lord’ - “Dear young people some of you may
not yet know what you will do with your life. Ask the
Lord and he will show you the way.” 10. Be happy - the
true Christian exudes great joy. “The Christian sings with
joy and walks and carries this joy.” This joy, he reminds
us, should translate to love of neighbor.

sick, etc., submit a written note no later than Monday pm to the office.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
“Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and
since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of days
in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians
called Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after
the Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day.
By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days
after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel.
In the seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too.
Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast,
but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast
of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until
1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God.
