PRESIDENT S REPORT
2011 at Shark Park although an enjoyable one, could however be described as the nearly year. The
Premiers nearly got into the semi-finals, only one competition point away. The Premier two
nearly won their final, losing narrowly to Southern. The Seniors (2B town) nearly won their final,
battling gallantly against a committed and robust crescent side at Kaitangata.
With those results in mind, the club nearly won the coveted Ainge shield. The Colts nearly
behaved themselves at the smoko, but alas, no matter what measures the committee take to maintain
decorum, the colts find new ways to alter their equilibrium. Several colts nearly died of exposure at
the smoko during the nude run in the snow. The Pacific Ocean nearly claimed the training fields
during a recent extreme high tide and heavy swell event. That was one nearly we did not want to
succeed. Maybe next season the results will be brighter.
A sincere thanks to the Opus Knights for their sponsorship of the club, the Gook and I are looking to
increase that membership for next season. Many thanks to the club sponsors, a donation of $450 plus
GST is much appreciated in these difficult financial times.
A pat on the back to Neil Turner next time you see him, he prepares and coordinates the Annual
report and Balance Sheet plus club publicity, a big job well done.
Regards to you all and with an ounce of luck in 2012, we ll change nearlys to definitelys .

CLUB CAPTAIN S REPORT
Strong playing numbers and a keen club spirit along with sound results in most grades made 2011 an
enjoyable and successful season. The Mako Colts winning the only championship for the club was the
season highlight this was closely followed by very good performances by the Premier 2 s and
2BTown who both lost their finals. Our Premier side finished 5th and only just missed out on the top
four. Strong performances from the Bull Colts and Tiger Colts saw both these teams finish in the
middle 4 of the very strong premier colts grade. The Hammerhead Colts battled away in division two
colts grade they also finished in the middle four. Unfortunately we finished one point behind Southern
who took out the Ainge Shield for 2011
During the year our playing numbers fluctuated which led to a second senior side and a fifth Colt s
side being entered. Unfortunately these teams were not sustainable through out University exam and
holiday periods. These teams gave the extra players some chances of rugby but definitely stretched
the club s coaching and management resources.
Pre season training started in February, trials ran every weekend and the competition games finished
in August. That s seven months on the job for coaches and managers. The club thanks all coaches,
managers and medics for their selfless input as well as thanks to those club members who helped out
on different occasions with teams and around the club and to all players for their dedication to the
team and club. Congratulations to those who gained representative honours and to all club award
winners
I would like to think all of those of you leaving Dunedin have enjoyed your stay, especially at Shark
Park and we wish you all the best and invite you all to return here anytime you are in Dunedin
All the best

CHAIRMAN S REPORT
The rugby season seems such a long time ago, compounded by the early season and the RWC games
and events that followed the season. Although the club started with the largest numbers of players for
many years, our strong player base wilted mid-season and we had to withdraw the fifth Colts side and
the second senior side. As a club we will need to have a rethink about how we keep the numbers
playing with us, whilst keeping full teams operating throughout the competition. The Metro Rugby
Council is having a full rethink as to how the competition can be better organised to accommodate the
unique effect that the University and Polytechnic have across all grades- so hopefully there will be
positive changes in that regard.
On the field, the club finished second overall to Southern (by 1 point) for the Ainge trophy with many
teams finishing in the top sections of their competition and the Premier Colts winning their grade. At
the Metropolitan awards, Liam Edwards was awarded the trophy for the most points scored- a terrific
achievement for the first year in the Premiers. We have also been well represented with players in all
Otago grades. A special mention must be made of Gareth Evans, who really solidified his place in the
starting 15 for Otago and continued to impress all season; and, Brad Weber who was selected and
played for the NZ U-20 s. The club also had Tumua Ione and Fraser Lau selected for the NZ Marist
side which are playing a Heartland XV.
Off the field, the Club has finished soundly but we cannot become complacent for 2012. We need
more committee members, more volunteers and more dollars. The club certainly doesn t get any
cheaper or easier to run so all assistance in this quarter will be gratefully received.
The Rugby World Cup provided us the opportunity to offer a social weekend with the Argentineans/
England and Italians/ Irish sides in town. Both weekends were great occasions. The club benefited
from the extra patronage but it was the camaraderie and fun that will be remembered and the
strengthening of the Marist Rugby linkages and connections. There is already a tour being planned to
Argentina!!!
Enjoy the break away and the Club looks forward to seeing you back, re-energised and enthused for
the 2012 season.

OBITUARIES
It is with deep regret that we record the passing of former players, coaches, managers, members
and friends of the club during the past year.
Richie (Dick) Nash, Chris Kennelly, JS (Stu) McFarlane ,Wayne Wilson, Noel Mullin s wife ,
Bert Haig s wife Valma, Eric Morris, Brian Brown s wife Judy, Life Member Tom Carroll, Life
Member John Flaherty s wife Marilyn and Michael Denton. Condolences to Tom Treacy on the
loss of his mother Kath. She was a great club supporter as was her late husband Tom Snr. who
was a valued Life Member of our club. Also to Jim McAtamney on the loss of his sister in law.
Should we have omitted anyone, we offer our sincere apologies.
Tom Carroll
As one of our life members, we know the Club was a large part of Tom s life and he was certainly
a very large part of our Club.
A student of Christian Brothers High School, he first played for the DRFC in 1948. Over the years
he moved to Wellington and Invercargill before returning to Dunedin- playing, coaching and
assisting with the Marist clubs in each of these locations. In 1970, Tom was elected onto the
committee of the DRFC and began his long affiliation with the administration of Dunedin. In 1980
Tom was awarded Life Membership as recognition for his service and input into the Club.
Many of the facilities we take for granted today at our club can be attributed to the Tom s hard
work, perseverance and ability. The library, the lighting on numbers 2 and 3 ground, the shower
block and changing rooms to mention a few.
Given it was Tom that managed to get the dunes raised along the side of number 1 ground I
wonder what he would have thought about the current proposal to let the sea continue its march
and take over Kettle Park?
As recalled in the 125 Years History of The Club- Tom was one of Club s likeable personalities, a
man with a twinkle in his eyes, a smile on his face and an Irish joke to tell. With Arnold Manion
and Alby Beck (both also DRFC life members), he formed an affable trio. These three
musketeers or bachelor triplets had much in common: football, golf, tramping, horses, holidays
and above all the Dunedin Rugby Club. Uncle Tom s cabin in Arrowtown gets mentioned on
many occasions throughout the book- testimony to it and his popularity.
Tom was a very proud club member and especially proud of the several Premier Championships
won by the club over recent years, along with the growing success in all grades. The development
of the club, its growth and its success also gave Tom cause for pride and rightly so.
7
To the family we thank you for allowing us to be part of Tom s farewell today but we also thank
you for the contribution Tom made and for the contribution you have all made to our club. You
will always be welcome in the clubrooms of the Dunedin Rugby Football Club and Tom will be
remembered forever within the Club.
Michael Denton
Mike Denton tragically passed away in September, at the age of only 29, while on an end of year
rugby trip to Bali, with his Nedlands Rugby Club (Perth, WA) team mates.
Mike s rugby background began with the DRFC Juniors, followed by his time at Kavanagh
College which included 2 years in the First XV in 1999 and 2000.
He spent 5 years out at Shark Park , primarily as a 2nd 5-8, with 2 years in the Bulls Premier
Colts, 2 years in the Premier IIs, and finally in 2005, being part of the Premiers championship
winning squad.
In addition to being part of the special banner winning year in 2005, one of Mike s proudest rugby
days came in 2001. In that year his Bulls Colts team defeated their fellow Mako Colts team during
the competition round that was to be the only defeat suffered by that very talented team that year
as they went on to win the championship.
On migration to Perth in 2006, Mike continued with his passion for rugby by joining up with the
Nedlands Rugby Club and had completed his 5th year in their Premier team this year. Mike s
rugby pinnacle would have been his inclusion in the Western Force A Programme in the last
year.
A magnificent tribute was paid to Mike, and his family, at his recent funeral services and
gatherings (in both his home town Dunedin and in Perth). The huge numbers of team mates, Club
8
members and family friends in attendance were testimony to the life of a fine all round young
man.
Mike s late father Peter was a former player, committee man and life member of the DRFC, with
Mike s brothers Greg, James and Paul all having played at the Club in recent years.
NZ MARIST COLTS 2011
I would like to thank the Club for nominating me for the 2011 New Zealand Marist Colts tour, and
also the financial help which allowed me to go on the tour. It certainly was a very special
experience that I will not be forgetting any time soon.
The tour started with my arrival in Auckland on a Friday. The rest of the team and I spent the day
in a car park, throwing a ball around and getting to know each other while we waited for players
from around New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Brisbane to also arrive.
9
We arrived in Mt Maunganui late about 8pm. We stayed at the Ocean Resort and Twin Towers,
which was really nice. We later found out Gordon Tietjens helped us get in there, as the hotel does
not usually allow young rugby teams.
The next day we had two trainings at Greerton Marist. That night the team for the first game was
announced. Afterward I was named captain for the tour and Gordon Tietjens presented me with
my playing jersey. This was a special moment for me. Later Gordon talked about the legacy of the
team and what standards we needed to set for the team and also personal standards.
On Sunday morning we attended Mass at St Mary Immaculate church where the local minister
who was German mistook us for the All Blacks. This got a few laughs from the congregation so
we did not bother to correct him. Later we played Greerton Marist but on the way there Gordon
had a surprise for us. He invited us to go to his place of work where he spoke to us as a team and
showed us a video that he shows his New Zealand 7s teams to inspire them. That day we beat
Greerton- Marist 69- 17. Afterwards we attended a presentation at the Greerton Club for them
reaching their 100th Jubilee.
We travelled to Whakatane on Monday along the way we visited three schools, St Mary Primary
School Tauranga, Aquinas College Tauranga, and St Thomas More Mt Maunganui. At each
school with a few nerves we talked to the children about what it meant to us to play for the team,
and the importance of making the most of their school years. That day the team went into
Whakatane for lunch. That night a couple others and myself came down with food poisoning. We
had got a taste of what the 95 All Blacks had to deal with.
On the Tuesday with very little sleep and an unsettled gut we trained for our game against a
Whakatane Marist Invitational team that night. Our game was set for 7pm but somehow the
referee was not told so we started the game at 7.30pm with their manager refereeing the first half
until the proper referee arrived. Needless to say it was a bit of a shambles and we were lucky to
get to the half down 5 0. The second half we fought back but ended up losing 11 - 7. Wednesday
was a bit of a recovery day where we travelled to Rotorua we certainly needed it.
Thursday we had school visits again in the morning we visited, St Mary Primary School Rotorua,
and St Michael Primary School Rotorua this time we mainly played with the children in their
lunch hour handing out chocolates and getting photos with the children most of the team found
this easier than talking in front of an assembly. That afternoon we played Central Bay Colts it was
quite close in the first half but in the second half the score blew out a bit we ended up winning 55
19.
Friday we travelled to Hamilton where we had our last school visits at St Patrick s Primary, St
Peter Primary School Cambridge, Marian School Hamilton East, and St John s College Hamilton.
At these schools visits we were a lot more comfortable with our public speaking and enjoyed our
time at these schools.
Saturday was the day we had been building towards the whole tour because today there would be
an A and B teams named to play the Hamilton Peace Cup Team and Te Awamutu Development
side respectively. The B team won comfortably 19 0 over Te Awamutu Development. The A
team was in for a much harder game against in some cases much more experienced players. We
lost 32 22 but were not ashamed of our performance as we left everything we had out on the
field.
That night we had a team prize giving and reflected on the success of the tour and friendships we
had made. Later we went as a team for a night on the town in Hamilton. It was a great end to a
tour.
10
Again I would like to thank the Dunedin Rugby Football Club for making it possible for me to go
on this tour; I definitely grew as a rugby player and as a person. I hope this tradition does not stop
as it is a very unique experience and is enjoyed by all who take part.
Many Thanks
Mark Grieve-Dunn.
KAVANAGH COLLEGE RUGBY 2011
2011 has been a great year for Kavanagh College Rugby. We had five teams across different age
groups representing us.
The Marquee team the 1st xv had a particularly good season. After gaining the wooden spoon for
the last two seasons, they were able to make a respectable 6th place. This was after qualifying 4th
in the middle four of the 12 team Highlander Secondary Schools competition and playing Dunstan
twice in two weeks in Alexandra to get to the 5th and 6th play-off game. The team was expertly
coached by Ant Harris, Brian deGroot and managed by John Thorn.
Special mentions go to Guy Woodhouse and James Tomkinson who have been members of the
team for the past 3 years and were finally able to reap the rewards of all their hard work over these
years.
The U16s had a mixed season with some close wins and some heavy defeats. The best being the
last play penalty goal vs. Roncalli to steal the game 22-21. With a constant stream of players
required to help the injury plagued 1st and U14s the U16s struggled to hold onto any momentum
gained through their wins and continuity was also hard to maintain, although the help was greatly
appreciated and crucial to the 1st success and the 1st would like to thank the coaching staff of
Kieran Lines and Roy Hawker for this help.
The U14s played in the top tier of their grade, even though they had been given the option to play
down a grade. This grade had the top boy s schools from around Dunedin and they managed to
surprise themselves by competing in many of the games and even winning a few. This showed the
character of the side and their Coaches Greg O Brien, Ross O Connell and Manager Bob King.
We also had a year 8 and year 7 team compete in the Dunedin schools rugby competition. This
involved three rounds robin games and a final. The year 8 s went through the round robin
unbeaten but they were complacent in the final losing to a very good Balmacewan team.
The year 7s were able to scrape through to the final of their grade where they would have a
rematch with the Taieri team which down them in the round robin games. It was a very close final
but Kavanagh were able to get the win in the end and the silver wear from this year. This was a
great way to cap of a great year for Kavanagh Rugby.
Congratulations to Eamon O Brien, Sio Tomkinson, John Thorn, Guy Woodhouse and James
Tomkinson for making Otago Representative Teams this year.

It was a very young and reasonably inexperienced team named by Coach Ross Hanson at the
start of the season with only half of the squad having any Premier rugby experience.
Playing a game based on speed and flair we scored a great first-up win against Zingari with
18yo debutant Liam Edwards scoring 25 points. Further wins in the first round were achieved
against Green Island, University, Kaikorai and a very close win, after an exceptional
performance, against Pirates where winger Sione Pulu scored in the last minute to give us a
narrow victory. At the end of the first round we were in 5th place on the table and pushing for a
18
place in the top 4. The loss of Brad Weber to NZ U20 team, Gareth Evans and Sam Giddens to
Otago ITM Cup, Sam Anderson-Heather to injury and Joe Dobson to the Fire Service sorely
tested our strength but the remaining team members stepped up and played some excellent
rugby in the second round and recorded wins over Zingari, Green Island, Alhambra and
University and collected the Jonathan Keogh Memorial Trophy from University (for the first
time), the Centennial Trophy from Alhambra and the Griffin and Murphy Memorial Trophies
from Green Island along the way as well as holding the Speight s Challenge Shield for 5
days . At the end of the second round we were just one point away from making the semifinals but finished a creditable 5th overall.
With all but two of the 2011 squad available for 2012 the future looks bright for this team for
next year and years to come. The two players leaving, Simon Luke and Anthony Diack have
both been regular starters in the Prem 1 side after distinguishing themselves in the Makos colts.
We wish them well in their future endeavours on and off the field. Special thanks also must go
to Mel Reynolds and Greg Usherwood for all their hard work in keeping the players in prime
playing condition throughout the season, for strapping them before the game and tending their
injuries.

While finishing 2nd in the competition in 2011 the social spirit of 2Btown was not lost and was
as strong as previous years. The base of players came from all walks of life and ranged in age
20
from 16 thru to 44. With the return of familiar faces there were also a good number of new
recruits joining the team.
The season started with an away game against Crescent in Kaitangata and finished with the
final also against Crescent at Kaitangata. We also had an away game in Milton against Toko.
The team travelled well and enjoyed the trips away. As well as brothers and brother in laws
playing together, this year saw another Father and Son combo take the field for 2Btown.
Thanks goes to the generosity of Gerard Aynsley who donated a new trophy to the team named
the Spirit of 2btown which acknowledges an individual s contribution to 2btown and club. The
first recipient is BJ Edh. BJ first started playing for the senior club in 1985 and he has played
for most of the teams including the prems, and over that time he has also helped out with
coaching and managing various teams, he has also been involved with the junior club with
coaching and committee roles also including a term as the junior club president.
A Big thanks goes out to all those players and supporter who have helped out in various ways
during the season

The Makos of 2011 was a team that the whole club can be very proud of. They were a
championship winning team after they beat the Southern Magpies in a hard fought final 18-11.
The Makos season started with good wins over Dunedin Tigers Alhambra Union and University
Gold. After these games the Makos had their first real test against Kaikorai who they beat 2210, after this they played the Southern Magpies and after a bad first 20 minutes the Makos were
down 12to nil. In the final 60 minutes they team showed the character they had and came back
and won the game 17-12.
They followed this up with good bonus point wins over Pirates, Dunedin Bulls, Zingari,
Southern Ravens, Taieri and Uni Blue. After the holiday break the competition split into the
top four and the Makos played a round robin against the other top three teams. All the games
were very tough and the Makos started off with a very hard fought 8-nil victory over Kaikorai,
this was followed by close losses to Southern Magpies and Taieri. This meant the Makos
finished in 2nd place but still qualified for the final.
This final was played against a very tough Southern Magpies team, the Makos dominated most
of the game but Southern came back towards the end however the Makos held on 18-11 to win
the Premier Colts Championship for 201.
The Makos of 2011 was a very enjoyable and successful team to be involved with both on and
off the field and all the players were a credit to themselves and the club. Thanks must also go
to the numerous number of people who helped out the Makos over the season.

This season was a frustrating year for the Bulls. Injuries took their toll early in the season
resulting in a lot of players having to play out of position. An initial squad of 27 was down to
19 after only 6 weeks and 15 for the last 4 weeks. It was a credit to the remaining players to
finish as high as they did on the table. Highlights included 2 wins over Southern Ravens and a
good showing against the Makos with only 13 fit players.

The 2011 Tiger Shark vintage is a quality blend of last years Division Two finalists; our squad
featured 21 returning Tigers, 9 Hammers and two freshers. Coach BJ may have planned to go
out on a high but with the age changing to Under 21 years it was all on for a crack at the big
time Div 1.
The theme for the year was stepping up and it was a good challenge for our lads to test
themselves at the very top colt s level. We got a high B grade for overall effort and
performance and finished in the middle of the table. We had wins against Varsity Gold 40-3,
Zingari-Richmond 46-12, Pirates 22-17, Alhambra-Union 19-18, losses, Makos 34-0, Kaikorai
23-17, Taieri 43-10, Bulls 41-27, Southern Magpies 59 0, Uni Blue 44-10 and one draw with
Southern Ravens 24 all.
The final game was one of our best with a comphrehensive win over the Southern Ravens 37-17
Aspects of the Div 2 mentality remained with the squad but they absolutely had the rugby talent
to foot it in this grade.
It s an end of an era for the team. We have stuck together for 3 years. This may be a good or
bad thing, players have come and gone, but of the 2009 players 6 made it thru to 2011. Noah,
Jack, Sewelly, Tai, Hamish and Brett Crusher are the originals.
However in reality it was Steve (BJ) Walker who was the driver of the Tiger Sharks. His
enthusiasm and ability to motivate us was fantastic. He certainly new how to have a good time
and taught us a few things on the way. He has been the glue for this team over these last 3 years
and he is, and will be, missed both by us and the club in general.
The last two years have also seen new team mates come on board, also becoming proud Tiger
Sharks and worthy of the Jersey. I hope these younger players continue on with the Tigers
tradition.
It has to be said that the Tigers have delivered for the club over the last few years with
championship trophies in 2009 and 2010. This year was always going to be hard for us.
As with last year, everyone contributed to the team atmosphere and performance, a great bunch
of young men. I hope they all keep playing the game for our club! Congratulations to Mako s
for winning the Premier Colts Cup. Thanks to the Bulls for a couple of reasonably close games.
Also many thanks to BJ, Tony, Grunter and Neil s for the season. Special mention also to John

behind the bar, Diana and the hard working ladies in the Kitchen. Thanks to the committee for
all the work they do behind the scenes.
Go the Mighty Tigers.

Hammerheads 2011 were unfortunately the most social laid back bunch I have encountered and
I say unfortunately because basically they never trained or if we did we got only the consistent
10 players there each time. This year s Team weren t endowed with the same individual level
of skills other Hammers teams of the past have had and to succeed we needed to practise but
players were keen to play but on a limited preparation (a bit like trying to win a Melbourne Cup
on a 400 metre trial) and consequently we would get well placed to win games and then falter.
We beat two of the top 4 sides and showed that we could be competitive. Having said that, the
boys certainly never let the team or club down on or off the field. They were a very tight unit.
Plenty of laughs and frivolity was had by all. We suffered about 7 serious injuries (broken
ankles, arms legs you name it) however none of these were while the bugger s were actually
playing rugby but usually the Wednesday night before or sat night following rugby. The team
was ably led by Luke Robson, who was a totally dedicated team man all year, (Amy our physio
will vouch for that apparently) was instrumental in always getting the team to games. We would
like to thank Amy and T our physios whose care and attention of the player s was great and
hopefully you will come back and help out next year. Thanks also to Barry Bridgeman for his
help in coaching (and if you thought I was frustrated Barry was right up there) and transporting
the boy s. Finally all the best to all the players for next year and hopefully you all return to
shark park and commit to playing some decent code.

DUNEDIN JUNIOR RUGBY CLUB REPORT
2011 SEASON
2011 was another great season for the Junior club, with us fielding teams from U5's to U13's,
with our older teams gaining the following end of season positionsU13- 3rd
U12-1st
U11-4th
U10- 1st
We did unfortunately have a 25% decrease in numbers, which we plan to actively address going
in to the 2012 season.
26
A relationship has begun with the Invercargill Marist Junior Club, Pioneer Rugby Club in Gore
and Athletic in Oamaru with teams all away this year for pre-season games. We are looking
forward to having them all back at home at Kettle Park next year.
Our coaches once again committed their own time and shared their skills with our players. Big
thanks to you all, and those who have actively supported through the committee- Nothing could
have been achieved with out you all, bring on 2012!!!
Thanks also to the senior club for their ongoing support; we are all looking forward to working
with you again in 2012.

Dunedin wins Inaugural Rural Rugby 7s Title
On Sunday 25 September 2011 the Dunedin club swept all before it when it won the Rural
Rugby 7s tournament held in Middlemarch. This tournament also doubled as trials for the 2012
Otago 7s team.
Playing in cool conditions with occasional snow showers sweeping across the field, the
Dunedin team beat Alhambra-Union (27-10), Maniototo (53-0) and Green Island (43-17) to
comfortably qualify for the semi-finals.
The semi-final against a Strath -Taieri invitation team saw Dunedin pile on the pressure and go
to the break with 3 tries (Liam Edwards (2) and Brad Weber) under their belt. A further two
tries in the second half to Ashton Tuck and Anthony Diack along with 4 Edwards conversions
throughout the match saw the team into the final with a comprehensive 33-0 victory.
The final was against University. Early tries to Ashton Tuck, Liam Edwards, Brad Weber and
Mark Atkins together with 4 conversions saw Dunedin out to a 26-0 lead and looking odds-on
to take out the title, however University struck back before the half time hooter with two
converted tries and the lead was trimmed to 26-14. A try to Mark Atkins from the second half
kick-off saw the lead extended to 31-14 and again looking comfortable but University dug deep
and scored two more converted tries against a tiring Dunedin defence to make it 31-28 with a
couple of minutes to play. The victory was finally sealed with an 80m individual effort from
Liam Edwards who outpaced the entire University team to make the final score 36-28.
Team members:
Gareth Evans, Brad Weber, Mitch Zandstra, Mark Atkins, Hugh Blake, Anthony Diack, Zac
Kelly, Ashton Tuck, Ben West, Jaron Drozdak, Tumua Ioane and Liam Edwards.
At the end of the tournament the following were named in the Otago 7s training squad
Gareth Evans, Brad Weber, Tumua Ioane, Liam Edwards, Mark Atkins, Hugh Blake and
Ashton Tuck.

Privilege for Henry to play 100 games
Prop Will Henry, a loyal member of the Dunedin premier team for the past 7 years was able to
celebrate his centenary game in style. Dunedin reached its best form of the season when
Alhambra-Union was beaten 46-8 at the North Ground. It s a privilege to be selected in your
premier team for 100 games, Henry said. The boys played so well for me on the day. Henry
never dreamed of notching up 100 games when he entered premier ranks in 2004. I ve been
lucky with injuries and haven t left the field yet, he said. Henry (26), the sports co-ordinator at
Kavanagh College, played his first premier game against Zingari-Richmond in the 2004 season.
It was a late call-up. I was called in on the bench, Henry said. But he was not there for long.
Hamish Kirk went down in the first three minutes and that was me, Henry recalled. Dunedin
won the game 30-10. His 50th game was also against Zingari at Kettle Park in 2008. Dunedin
won 27-9. The highlight of his premier years was winning the Speight s championship banner
in 2005 and 2009. In 2005, Dunedin beat Varsity 19-12 to win the final, in 2009 Dunedin beat
Southern 11-10 in a cliff-hanger. Henry found the most difficult teams to play were Varsity and
Southern. Our best games have always been against Southern, especially in the Ron Reggett
Memorial match, Henry said. We are not as big as they are so it s always hard. His toughest
opponents in the front row have been former All Black Kees Meeuws (Southern) and Sam
Hibbard (University). We ve always had a good tussle when I ve played against Sam, he
said. Henry is still young but does not see himself reaching 200 games. I ll look at 150 if the
body holds up, he said. I will do more fitness work over the summer to make sure I m OK for
next year. He is keen to play premier rugby with his younger brother, Gifford, who is a
member of the King s High School First XV. He has broken his leg and is not playing at
present. Henry was born and bred in Dunedin and played for the King s First XV in 2002. He
has played for the Otago Under -19 team, the Otago Colts and the Otago Development team.
Henry has been around the premier scene in Dunedin for seven years and still has ambitions to
play for Otago. If you don t have that goal you shouldn t be playing premier rugby, Henry
said. Of course I want to but I know there is still a lot of hard work to do. I love playing for the
Dunedin club. I just love the rugby down here.

Congratulations
To Andrew Hore on becoming the third All Black Captain from the club in the past 15 years, he
follows Taine Randell and Paul Henderson, and they create a record that no other club in the
country can match.
World Cup Club Representation
The club has become the only one in the country to have three of its former players competing
for three different countries in the World Cup. Andrew Hore for the All Blacks, Tia Paulo for
Manu Samoa and Geoff Cross for Scotland. Hore joined the club Premier side on leaving John
McGlashan College, Paulo played for the Premiers while still at Kavanagh College; later also
captaining the New Zealand Under-19 and Colts winning team. Cross had a year in the Colts
Makos side while here from Scotland to learn more about the game. This fine prop has not
forgotten the club and presented one of his World Cup jerseys to Ralph Perkins, who was our
Club captain at the time, for the club. Geoff is now a General Practitioner in a busy Medical
Centre in Scotland.
Jack Skinner, Bill Lawrence, Bert Haig, Maurice Ryan and Kinney Curran
All members of the senior side that won the 1951 Championship Banner.
29
1951 Team Re-Union
During the season the club organised a re-union for the surviving members of the 1951 senior
side that won the Championship Banner for the first time since 1908. Coached by Arnold
Manion and Captained by Frank Macpherson the side defeated University A at the Brook in
the final match of the season by 16 3 to clinch the title before a crowd of 8000. Of the
surviving members we hosted Jack Skinner, Bert Haig, Bill Lawrence, Kinney Curran and
Maurice Ryan: Noel Mullin (Auckland) and John Kennelly (ill-Health) were apologies. We also
hosted 3 widows Joyce Kerr, Gay Dunne and Isobel Riach whose husbands, Maurice, John and
Jack had all been members of the side. Maureen Hailes a sister of Frank Macpherson was also
an honoured guest. Many former club members attended: afternoon tea was enjoyed as was the
club match of the day at Kettle Park, followed by a social hour with current players, and then
appropriate speeches and presentations were made. Several of the 51 side found it hard to
leave the club rooms, their popularity was epitomised by the standing ovation given to them all.
Another Club Record?
It is great to be able to report that we currently have 63 Secondary Schools from right around
N.Z. represented in our playing ranks.
Forty four schools are represented in our 4 Colts Grade sides while a further 19 are among the
players in our Prem. 1 & 2 sides.
This could well be a record in club rugby history in the Otago province; indeed it may well be a
record in the whole country.
We hope to even build on this in 2012.

Report of the auditor to the Members of the
Dunedin Rugby Football Club
I have examined the accompanying Statements of Financial Performance and Position of the
Club and have obtained all the information and explanations I have required.
In common with other organisations of a similar nature, control over certain items of income
prior to its being recorded is limited, and there are no practical audit procedures to determine
the effect of this limited control.
Subject to the possible effect of the limited control referred to in the preceding paragraph, in my
opinion, the Statements of Financial Performance and Position respectively give a true and fair
view of the financial position of the Club as at 30 September 2011 and of the result for the year
ended on that date.
