A LETTER FROM STEVE KNIER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Parents, Families, Friends:
The legislators of the State of North Carolina continue to face very difficult economic challenges. If we remain silent,
there is a strong chance that we will be impacted by significant reductions in funding for services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It will take every parent, sibling and guardian, along with community partners to
join together and serve as strong advocates for those who do not have a voice. We know from our trip to Raleigh in
May, that meeting with state representatives can be productive as we promote the services we provide for individuals
with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Sharing concerns with our legislators is a key component in the education and awareness process regarding budget cuts. By meeting with our legislators face to face, we are able to share
our story and countless other stories about the how these devastating cuts will affect our families. Your voice is important and we cannot just hope that our legislators will make the right decisions. We need to reach out, share our own
stories and explain very clearly why services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are so greatly
needed in our communities.
VOLUNTEERING WITH A SMILE
Once a week, Rob and his peers volunteer at Golden Living Center - Starmount, a senior facility
and rehab center in Greensboro. Rob assists residents serving refreshments, crafts, and games.
The residents look forward to his smiling face and friendly personality. Whenever the staff at the
Golden Living Center asks for anything, he is quick to respond with a big smile. Rob states, “I
like volunteering, it makes me happy to help others.” Activity Director Colleen Brown says,
“Rob’s upbeat personality has an infectious effect on all of the residents of the facility; his laugh
is the best!” Rob is a great volunteer because of his positive outlook at life.
