THE PASTOR WRITES
February 2016
by Dr. Chuck Hampton, Transition Pastor
The love month has arrived again. What a perfect time to say just what I love about the Harrisburg family!
I love our super committed staff of ministers and the support team that believe in the purpose for which Christ has called us
as His church! They love what they do. Pray for them as they lead out for maximum impact of their ministries.
I love DiscipleNow and the opportunity it affords our students to “reset” their lives for Jesus and His “divine design” for their
lives. What a great response for the event this year! Sue Mac provided model leadership and the
DNow staff and host home families were the best!
I love it when we do missions. Bob Fulgham, David Langerfeld, Tim Alexander and Sue Mac joined
in with our Honduras medical/dental/evangelistic mission team to display the love of Jesus before
that part of our world. Thank-you to the Honduras Mission Team for giving of yourselves for others
to receive the gift of the gospel!
I love how you in the Harrisburg family give so sacrificially! We exceeded the Lottie Moon Offering
Goal of $87,000 for Global Missions. We gave $90,581.37! Then, wow, what a statement of faith as
we exceeded our 2015 budget receipts by 11%. The church budget was $3,168,174.94 and we
gave $3,502,393.86!
FAITH is a great way to love on our community. A brand new season gets underway on February
23. Come and help us share the love of Christ for our hurting world!
Express loving appreciation to our Lead Pastor Search Committee and Minister to Students Search
Committee. Both groups are following God’s lead in the deliberate search for the right leaders for
such a time as this at Harrisburg. Continue to support them in prayer.
I conclude this article with something I don’t love to do. Mary Langford, the Lead Pastor’s
Administrative Assistant, is retiring after a 40 year career of excellence. Without a doubt, she is one
of the greatest in her role that I have ever seen! She will be missed by me and many others in our staff and deacon ministries!
Mary, we love you for what you have done for us in serving Christ for His glory! The grace, peace and joy of Jesus to you in
these days of a new and exciting phase in your life.
For His purpose,
Pastor Chuck
With a heart for God and for His people, Mary Langford has served faithfully and with distinction as a Pastor’s Ministry
Assistant, to me and to Dr. Gayle Alexander at FBC, Tupelo, as I am sure she has with Dr. Forest Sheffield in her tenure
at Harrisburg Baptist Church. It is my joy to write a word of commendation and appreciation for Mary on the occasion
of her retirement.
Being a pastor is no easy calling, and that means the supportive role of the Pastor’s Ministry Assistant comes with its
unique challenges (An understatement, for sure!). How do you keep up with the Pastor and all that he is keeping up
with? You do so with much prayer and by God’s grace, and that is why I know Mary Langford walks with the Lord—for
she has “kept up” with several pastors in the years of her service with such grace. Her peaceful disposition, attention
to the smallest detail, and uncompromising commitment to excellence have made us all better servants of the Lord.
And through the years of working with Mary, I testify to the reality that Mary Langford’s service on church staff has been
through the years “a labor of love,” coming out of a heart of love and commitment to Jesus Christ!
Congratulations, Mary, and thanks for all you have done to facilitate ministry through the Body of Christ in general and
the pastor’s office in particular. Thank you for your support, wise counsel, and encouraging words and actions that
were part of your everyday ministry to us all! May our Lord bless your days ahead with much joy and happiness!
Dr. Randy Von Kanel
January 28, 2016
Mary Langford is one gifted ministry assistant. I can’t speak too highly of her proficiency in secretarial skills,
organizational skills, and people skills. As a secretarial assistant to the pastor she is tops in compassion for the people,
understanding how ministry is to be done, excels in keeping confidences, and is ever aware of the demands of daily
details.
Gayle Alexander
Mary has exemplified all the abilities it requires to be an Administrative Assistant to Senior Pastors. She possesses
wonderful people skills coupled with the kindest and most loving Spirit of Jesus imaginable. Her organizational skills are
exceptional which makes her extremely qualified for keeping up with the Senior Pastor’s schedule and the ability to
work under the pressure of constant deadlines. Mary’s ministry to her Lord as an Administrative Assistant has been more
than exceptional and made my ministry so much more effective. She is to be congratulated for her service for almost
27 years as an Administrative Assistant to Senior Pastors. We will miss her immensely at Harrisburg.
Dr. Forrest Sheffield

STUDENT NEWS
THANK YOU! Disciple Now was a huge
success. Our Students gathered with
over 1,400 other students from the area
for a weekend of Worship, Bible Study
and Service. We filled the room at the
Furniture Market and learned how to
follow God even more with our lives.
On Saturday we served a neighborhood
by raking yards, preparing meals for
families and delivering cookies and
encouragement to every family in the
neighborhood.
Our Student Ministry is so thankful
for host home parents, van drivers, our
mission project helpers, our college
leaders, the freshmen serve team, those
who sorted shirts and supplies, people
that provided meals, snacks, and served
food, the countless people that prayed
for the weekend and others that served
to help make the weekend a HUGE
success. We are thankful that we have a
church that values students and provides
opportunities for them to grow in their
relationship with Christ!
