languages week 2015

TENBY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
MIRI
PRINCIPAL’S NEWSLETTER 23/01/15
Languages Week has been an annual
affair at TIS Miri, showcasing the
work of the students learning
different languages and celebrating
the wide range of cultural
backgrounds in the School (twentyfour nationalities to date).
This event is organised and coordinated
by Mr Saba and his languages team, but
involves staff from across the School and
of course, the students in all the games,
puzzles and performances which take
place over the week. Across the week,
many activities took place including
languages games, quizzes, puzzles, the
Calligraphy competition, a Malay
crossword (primary) competition,
Chinese Chess competition, karaoke,
movies and much more. This cumulated
in the closing ceremony on Friday
morning, which involved students from
Performances from all age-groups
all year groups and all the languages
offered in School. The children
themselves did the vast majority of the
work on their scripts, sketches and even
the technical aspects of the show in the
auditorium control room. The quality of
their performances this year have gone
from strength to strength.
We thank parents for their
participation in filling phrases of
their native languages in the ‘How
Do You Say ‘X’ in Your Language’
display board and preparing the
children for their performances. It
was a great pleasure to see so many
parents here on Friday, and also to
welcome Hajah Rosnani, Miri
District Education Officer to address
the audience and pave the way for
our involvement more local events.
This fabulous week would not have
materialised without the
commitment and dedication from
the teachers, but not forgetting the
support staff with their tireless
assistance with logistics and setup
throughout this week.

TIS Miri: LEARN LOCALLY, EXCEL GLOBALLY
JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY COMPETITION
At the beginning of the year,
Japanese people traditionally
create works of calligraphy known
as ‘kakizome’, which symbolize
their hopes, wishes or resolutions
for the year ahead. The Japanese
class held its second kakizome
competition on 12 January.
The art of Japanese calligraphy
originated in China and came to Japan in
the sixth or seventh century, along with
methods for making brushes, ink, and
paper. In those days, calligraphy was an
essential part of the education of
members of the ruling noble families.
Works of calligraphy are not only
admired for the accurate composition of
the characters, but also for the way the
brush is handled in their creation, the
shading of the ink, and the balanced
placement of the characters on the
paper. All the works are being judged
by Tenby teachers and the three best
will be announced on 26 January.

SECONDARY SCIENTISTS VISIT THE SHELL LABS
Students from Year Nine and Ten
were lucky enough to visit the
Production Chemistry Lab at Shell
Lutong on Tuesday.
Investigating the Laboratories
The students were beguiled by the range
and complexity of analytical chemistry
equipment and technology including the
2m+ MYR Inductively Coupled Plasma
Analyser! The very words ‘plasma’ and
‘lasers’ conjures visions of science fiction
in the minds of maturing students, but
here they were, seen in practical use in
Miri! Students were also able to see a
lot of the more ‘mundane’ chemical
apparatus being used professionally,
which helps to give meaning to what
they see and use back in school. They
also learned that Analytical Chemistry is
much more than expensive equipment,
but that the value lies in the information
and data it provides to support and
assist production teams in the successful
delivery of oil and gas products which so
pervade our daily lives. This most
instructive and enjoyable morning was
‘topped off’ by snacks and drinks: much
appreciated and rapidly consumed!
Many thanks to Yassin, Sara and Cocoy
for their wonderful support, and further
thanks to Michael Scheck and his team
for a really illuminating visit.
