English Focus Our topic this term is: Literacy genres covered this term: • • • • Non-chronological report about reptiles Descriptions of rainforest animals Narrative poetry Write a narrative based on an African story • Rhyming couplets These genres will be taught through rich texts and will give learners the opportunity to develop their reading, writing and oracy skills. Rainforests Science Focus Children will… • Look at food chains – complete role play Please encourage your child to learn their multiplication tables and to become familiar with digital and analogue clocks. Science will be taught by Mr McCabe during PPA time. PSE & R.E Focus WOW Creative Focus • Create an oil pastel picture of a rainforest using the works of Henri Rousseau as inspiration. • Create a 3D rainforest canopy in groups, focussing on the layers. • Listen to rainforest sounds and attempt to replicate using percussion instruments activity where children become a food chain. • Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways. • Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways. Trip to West Midlands Safari Park 30.06.17 • Debate and discussion through the rainforests topic about our moral obligation to look after our planet (e.g. deforestation) • Celebrate the Hindu festival of Rhaki • PSE will also be promoted through the Family Values Scheme and during daily assemblies. Other Curriculum Focus: Welsh, History and Geography Welsh – To start to use the past tense to describe what you have been doing. Use preposition he/she to describe what someone else is doing. Ask about someone’s family/say who is in your family. Use a range of questions (e.g. ble, pryd, beth etc.) Read story ‘Pel-Droed’ aloud, taking on different characters. Telling the time in Welsh. Geography and History – Use Chromebooks to research geographical terms relating to rainforests and match to definitions. Use atlases to locate rainforests. Label a diagram of the layers of a rainforest. Write a persuasive letter linked to the impact of deforestation. Interpret a graph that demonstrates the effect of deforestation. The homework set will mainly be based around mathematics, however literacy or topic based homework will be sent out occasionally. Please can learning logs be returned to school by THURSDAY, so that homework can be marked in preparation for the Friday. Spellings – 10 spellings have been extracted from your child’s work and sent home to be learnt throughout the term. Test will be held during the last week before half term (week beginning 22.05.17) P.E - This term we will be focussing on competitive sports and athletics.Please ensure P.E kits are brought into school on Tuesday. P.E kits will need to remain in school for the duration of the week. We may go outside this term depending on weather conditions. Please suitable footwear is brought to school.
