And Now...A Word from Our President:
ear Friends & Fellow Alumni:
I am very honored and proud
to serve as the President of the Band
of Blue Alumni Club. We are a large,
diverse club, but we all share at least
one thing--a love for MTSU and the
Band of Blue . As I write this letter, I’m
watching our Blue Raiders play in the
NCAA tournament and my heart is
beaming with pride and the pride our
community and University.
Over the past few months, we
have presented scholarships to four
outstanding students and have had
several of our Alumni Club members
honored with awards and recognition
for their dedication to their craft.
Next month, we will be inducting
three incredible people in to the Band of
Blue Hall of Fame: Brian D. Lamkin, John
Reid, and Dawn Tittle. Come join us for
the Symphonic Band Concert and Hall of
Fame Induction & Reception on Tuesday,
April 26th, 7:30PM in the Hinton Music
Hall.
The board is planning an
activity-filled 2016 for the BoBAC and
we encourage you to stay in touch
and to participate when and as much
as you can.

Giving Credit Where Credit is Overdue
Being a great teacher or educator these days is not always an easy task to
accomplish. It is even harder to get recognition for the hard work and
dedication they put into their craft. Recently several Band of Blue Alumni have
been given such acknowledgments and praises. These educators have been
making splashes with not only their students but throughout their communities.
Some of these educators are continuing to shine in the field of music while
others are taking their lessons learned from music and transposing them into
the core curriculum needed by all. Here is but a small list of some Band of Blue
Alumni that have been recognized in the last few months with formal awards or
covered by various media outlets recently for their positive contributions in the
field of education around the greater Middle Tennessee Area:

Congratulations to these and all Band of Blue Alumni that
continue to challenge and support your students on their journey
toward becoming who they’ll be in this life! Your hard work is paying off
and does not go unnoticed. You are truly working with the best of your
abilities to live up to the title “Teacher”.
If you have news about a Band of Blue Alumnus that you would
like to share, please do not hesitate in letting the rest of us know. We
truly love to celebrate and embody the “Esprit De Corps”. Many of you
have taken your collegiate experiences with you into the professional
world and transformed them into lessons to support and grow those
around you.
Thank you to all of our alumni that continue to give a great name to the
Band of Blue and it’s Alumni. But most of all, Thank you to all of our teachers
and educators for everything you have done and continue to do!

Dear Band of Blue Alumni Club,
“Receiving the Joseph T. Smith Music Education Award means so
much to me. All that I do in the music building is because I love the Band of

“My time in the Band of Blue will go down in my personal
history as some of the best years of my life. I came to college
with my head in the wrong places as most freshman do, but I
can say with great confidence that I would not be where I am
today without Craig Cornish and the Band of Blue.
My leadership path with the BoB started my junior year as
a rank leader. Before, band was just something I did for fun, and
I never thought I'd accomplish anything noteworthy, but after
finally earning a first trumpet spot in the show, I thought I might
have a chance to add something great to the already amazing
program. I went on to

Winning the Linda L. Mitchell Leadership Scholarship was
the icing on the cake. I've never met Linda personally, but she
must have been an incredible leader, and just a genuine good
person during her time at MTSU for them to name such a
prestigious award after her. The Band of Blue awoke a
motivation in me ,that I've never even seen in myself, before I
graduated. I plan to take that motivation and use it elsewhere for
the benefit of others in the music community. Thank you Craig

amazing award! GO BLUE!!!"

BoBAC Elects 3 More To Hall of Fame
On April 26, the Band of Blue Hall of Fame will grow 3 members stronger.

Brian Lamkin, John Reid, and Dawn Tittle will be recognized and welcomed as the
class of 2016. These 3 individuals were nominated by their peers and voted into
the Hall of Fame by the Alumni Club Board. Each member presents an illustrious
resume and love for both music and the Band of Blue. These newest members will
be recognized at the Symphonic Band Concert on April 26th, 7:30PM in the Hinton
Music Hall and presented with a plaque of recognition.
This trio of phenomenal trumpet players showed their love for both their
craft and the Band of Blue:
Brian D. Lamkin:
A native of Louisville, Kentucky (Pleasure Ridge Park
High School), Brian attended MTSU for the first time when
his band competed at COC. This was his first introduction to
the Band of Blue and after a casual conversation with Joseph
Hall of Fame
T. Smith after the competition, Brian ultimately decided to

scholarship in band and orchestra . He majored in Instrumental
Tuesday
Music Education and studied trumpet with Dr. Tom Naylor.

Brian was a very active leader with the Band of Blue
(1974-1978) and various music groups within MTSU and Murfreesboro:

 Lead Trumpet with MTSU Jazz Ensemble (1976-1978) and a four-year member

Once Brian graduated from MTSU, he had a successful, nine-year career as
a high school band director and music department chairman at his alma mater in
Louisville. He received his Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance and
Pedagogy in 1980 from the University of Louisville. In 1981, Brian was named the

he remained until 1987.
Brian’s leadership among band directors in Kentucky included serving as the
Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) District Chairman for two years. During
this time, he served on a committee which developed and implemented the KMEA
State Marching Band Championship, which continues to this day.
Brian has performed with groups all over the country including orchestras and
groups in Indiana, University of Louisville, Virginia, televised productions for NBC &
ABC, and with big bands and musical theatre productions in Dallas, Columbia (SC),

Some of his more memorable accomplishments included competing at COC
with both his programs and seeing his students honored with All-State honors (some of
which went on to major in music at MTSU and later compete with their bands at COC).
Brian not only focused his efforts on music education and performance, but also into
developing future leaders in the community.
Post teaching career, Brian went onto pursue a life-long dream of becoming a
Special Agent with the FBI. From 1987-2012, Brian served in various assignments as an
FBI Special Agent, both domestically and internationally. Brian served in various

Reception to Follow
Dawn Tittle was a music lover from a very young age. Born to parent who had
a southern gospel singing group, she spent her childhood traveling with them each
weekend to minister at churches throughout the mid-south. In middle school, she
signed up for band and left her original choice of saxophone for the trumpet. Those
who knew Dawn well could not imagine her with any other choice. She excelled with a
natural talent for the instrument placing each year in the top bands.
Through her high school years, she was frequently
rewarded with solos in all her bands. As she was introduced
to the Band of Blue at COC during her Senior year of high
school, her parents saw her jumping from the stands cheering
for the Band of Blue as they took the field for exhibition. From
that moment they, knew her college choice had been made.
Dawn entered MTSU in the fall of 1995 and
immediately, the Band of Blue became her life. During her
tenure at MTSU she served as President of the Band of Blue
and was an active member of Delta Omicron. Dawn also
starred in a campus wide cult favorite show, “The Dawn Tittle Show”, which was
produced and frequented many of the friends she had met in the music department.
Dawn graduated from MTSU with a Degree in Music Industry.
Dawn moved back to her hometown in Northwest Tennessee after her
undergraduate. She was an instructor with the University of Phoenix and established
the Center Point Business Solutions where she served as President. Dawn was also a
member of the Society for Human Resource Management. She would go back to
school and work towards earning her graduate degrees. While working towards
her doctorate in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, she was diagnosed
with cancer in 2013
She served her hometown by teaching band camps in the summer and
supported the local theatre as much as music director for numerous shows.
But Dawn loved nothing more than wearing Raider Blue to games each fall to
support her beloved Alma Mater. Her Pride for the Band of Blue followed her
long after her marching days were over. Despite her success academically and
later in her chosen field, her accomplishments musically defined who she was.
Dawn succumbed to her cancer just four short months after diagnosis. The back of her
marker pictures a trumpet below the MTSU field with the following quote:
When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope
that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say,
“I used everything you gave me’”. Erma Bombeck
Dawn was a driving force in the creation and establishing the Band of Blue
Alumni Club. It is through her dedicated that this organization was possible.
