Peter is writing to Christians, who had been persecuted and driven from their homeland.
However, what Peter said to those Christians is applicable to all Christians, everywhere, because
it contains encouragement and guidelines for spiritual holiness and growing in the faith.
Those who claim to have been born again must commit themselves to laying aside the
garments of the old life and living the new life in Jesus Christ.
New-born babies are expected to grow up into adulthood. The same applies to those who
have become Christians through the new birth in Jesus Christ. We all know that new-born
babies cry and beg for milk soon after their birth. Why? It’s because milk is their proper food at
that time. In fact, it is the only necessary food in the first few weeks of a baby’s life.
In the same way, Christians (those who have been born again) need the proper spiritual food
in order to grow up into adulthood in the Christian faith. Peter says that in verse 2 (“that you
may grow”). It is not God’s will for those, who have been born again, to remain in infancy.
It is God’s will that genuinely born-again people continue to grow in the grace and knowledge
of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). In that verse, the word “grow” means to keep on
growing. This tells us that there is no such thing as reaching a point, in our Christian life, where
we no longer need to be concerned about growing in the faith. This is one of the dangerous
mistakes some Christians make. It can lead to arrogance, pride or a reduction in their need for
learning from God’s pastors and teachers.
These verses should remind us of a couple of truths: 1. since we are in Christ, we are not
what we used to be. 2. Even though we are in Christ, we are not what we can be. There is
always room for growth in our spiritual life. As time goes by, we should make it our aim to be
more and more like our Lord, Jesus Christ. Keep on growing.
