MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Principal
March marks the end of the third quarter of the school year. This is a
definitive benchmarking of how our students are doing in their classes and
Brian Mangan
how they are doing in regards to getting ready for the upcoming Reading
Assistant Principals FCAT in April and the End of Course (EOC’s) Exams in April/May and
DeAdra Hall
Advanced Placement (AP) Exams in May. While the quarter marking
Melissa Layner
period does not change a student’s Grade Point Average or Credit
Obed Morales
accumulation, it does indicate if a student is on track to improve in these
Cathy Reese
two key areas. The Reading FCAT, EOC’s, and AP tests are definitively high
Jereme Wilson
stakes examinations that directly impact graduation, college credit and
career readiness. I continue to encourage our Jaguar Parents to support,
School Phone
motivate, and challenge our Jaguar students to do their best on the classes
239-369-2932
and tests in which they are engaged. Our teachers and staff will continue
School Website
to do their utmost to prepare our students for success.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL...continued
The Winter Sports Season wrapped up with our Girls Basketball program making it to the Regional
quarterfinals of the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Boys Basketball program enjoyed
another winning season accompanied by a deep run into the playoffs. Both the Boys and Girls soccer
programs experienced successful seasons with the student athletes representing all of ELCHS in an
admirable fashion, both in the classroom and on the field. Our Jaguar Wrestlers did an excellent job
on the mat and in the classroom. We are all enjoying the start of the Spring Sports Season as
Baseball, Softball, Tennis, and Track are all underway!
I would remind all of our stakeholders that Spring break has our students and teachers off the week of
March 25th through March 29th. This break will be the last of the regular school days off between April
1st and the end of the school year.
Sincerely,
Brian Mangan

AVID I Field Trip
Our wonderful AVID Freshmen students worked hard first
semester by participating in fundraisers and excelling in
academics. By raising the funds and getting a good GPA, we
had the privilege of visiting Florida Gulf Coast University on
February 6th, 2013. The AVID program prepares us for college
by showing us how to be organized and how to take important
information and put it together by taking Cornell notes.
Instead of just telling us; AVID wanted to show us what college feels like. This field trip to FGCU
opened our eyes to the college world. One interesting fact you may not know about FGCU is that the
class size is much smaller than the other state universities. Lixandra learned “you have to maintain at
least a 3.00 GPA to attend FGCU”. Erykah, another AVID1 student said, “I learned about the different
majors FGCU has to offer.” Before the field trip to FGCU, we had many questions about college life;
however, thanks to the AVID program we returned with more than a taste of knowledge about college,
we have a hunger for college. - Story By- Arialys Vazquez (AVID I student)
Scholarship Recipient
The Jaguar Community is happy to report Amanda Garcia has been
selected as a recipient of the 2013-2014 Comcast Leaders and Achievers®
Scholarship. This award, funded through the Comcast Foundation,
recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for commitment
to community service, academic achievement and demonstrated leadership.
Congratulations Amanda!
Criminal Justice Cadets Become Explorers
Congratulations to junior Jessica Mendez, senior Jenny Aguilar and
sophomore Cinthya Guerra on their acceptance to the Lee County
Sheriff’s Explorer Program! The three students are currently enrolled
in East Lee County High School’s Criminal Justice Academy and will
utilize the skills learned in both programs to help them eventually
obtain positions as law enforcement officers. The cadets went
through a tedious process which included attending nightly meetings
and writing an extensive essay in order to be admitted to the program. These cadets are exemplifying
the three components of the CJ motto: Respect, Integrity and Pride. Great job, ladies!
Biology Boot Camp!!
Target: students that are required to pass the End of Course (EOC)
exam for Graduation!
Tutoring will be held afterschool on Monday and Tuesdays through
April 29, 2013. Instructors will target the 22 benchmarks that
student’s will be tested on during the EOC.
Come to the Biology Boot Camp, workout your brain and
CONQUER the EOC.
Sheldon Fleming
The Jaguar Community would like to congratulate Sheldon Fleming who
signed his letter of intent to accept a full athletic scholarship to Eastern
Kentucky University to play football. EKU is a division IAA school, making
Sheldon the first ELCHS athlete to receive a division I scholarship for
athletics.
Sheldon, your Jaguar Family is proud of you. Congratulations!
Empower 3000
The East Lee County High School Reading Department and the entire Jaguar Community would like to
congratulate Carlos Rios who was the National Daily Top Scorer in Empower 3000 in December 2012.
Great Job Carlos!
A+ Team News
On Wednesday February 6, our A+ Challenge team consisting of Thor
Gonzales, Jared Pabon, Latricia Richardson, and Brooke Martinez competed
against Fort Myers. Even though we did not win, it was a great experience
and they did their best representing East Lee County. A special thank you to
Caroline Hanifen for letting us borrow shirts so that our team could
represent in style. A+ Challenge Advisors Mary Jo Potter & Bethany
Loescher.
ArtFest’s Sidewalk Art Competition
Some of East Lee County High School’s most talented
art students took their skills out of the classroom and
into the community by participating in ArtFest’s
Sidewalk Art Competition in February 2013. Although
the students did not place, they did an amazing job of
showcasing their talents, expertise and Jaguar Pride.
The Jaguar Community salutes all of the artists and
Instructor Castiglione.
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Beginning in April, your child will take the Algebra End-of-Course exam – a high-stakes test that will determine her/his future. To
propel her/his success, the University of Florida has joined forces with Study Edge to create and deliver ALGEBRA NATION – a
highly effective, intensive, online learning, 24/7, free End-of-Course exam preparation resource.
What is the Algebra End-of-Course exam?
--‐ For your child to receive algebra credit and graduate from high school, she/he must pass this
test at the end of the semester.
--‐ This test is a computer-based exam that will have 35-40 multiple-choice questions and 20-25
fill-in response questions.
What is Algebra Nation?
--‐ Algebra Nation meets your child on his/her own time in a familiar, comfortable pressure free
environment. Algebra Nation is available on Facebook, iPhones, Android phones, and iPads.
--‐ Highly interactive and fun videos help your child review the material they learn in the
classroom after school or on the weekends.
--‐ Study guide packets come with every video. Your child can print out study guides and use
them to follow along with the videos.
--‐ The “Test Yourself!” practice (only available online) tool after each section allows your
student to check if s/he understood the material. The “Test Yourself!” section also looks similar
to the EOC, so it will also help your child get comfortable with computer-based testing.
o The results page will not only show which problems your child got right or wrong, but
will also feature videos that break down how to solve each problem.
--‐ Algebra Nation Wall: interactive discussion forum where students can ask and answer
questions anytime about the material.
o Study Experts and Florida teachers answer questions and read every thread to ensure
the accuracy of peer replies.
--‐ Students receive Karma Points for asking and answering questions on the Algebra Wall. By
helping others, students understand the material better.
o UF and Study Edge award prizes for karma points:
o “75 for 75”: The first 75 classrooms in Florida to earn 10,000 karma points as a class
will win $75 for a pizza party for their class.
o The students with the most karma points at the end of February, Mach, and April
will receive an iPad
What security measures are in place?
--‐ Algebra Nation is a planet in the Facebook universe: that means we can make our own
rules. Our wall is unique. We have one wall for the entire state of Florida, so the wall is
completely transparent – there are no private chats or interactions. Students cannot click on
another students’ picture, message another student, or friend each other on Algebra Nation.
Algebra Nation continued...
What can I do to help my child succeed?
--‐ Go to www.AlgebraNation.com and visit the “Parents” page to watch a quick video on how
to get started.
--‐ Start watching Algebra Nation videos yourself! We suggest you simply start at Section 1. That
way, you will cover everything that your child will see on the End of Course exam and you’ll
be able to help your student with any homework questions s/he may have.
--‐ Make sure your child uses ALGEBRA NATION resource. Encourage her or him to go to
www.AlgebraNation.com and visit the “Students” page to watch the quick video on how to
get started.
--‐ Ask your child to watch videos to help him/her on homework, to review for a test, or to ask
questions that weren’t answered in class. Also encourage your child to regularly use the “Test
Yourself!” tool. The self-test will help your student see which parts of the material she/he
understood, and which videos she/he should review.
To get started, please sign up at AlgebraNation.com. We have a dedicated staff available to
answer questions through email and phone. Contact us at [email protected] or (888)

ACT and SAT Concordant Scores
After conducting a thorough concordance study, the Department of Education has established
concordant scores for the Grade 10 FCAT 2.0 Reading passing scale score of 245. The new scores
that may be used to satisfy this portion of a student’s graduation requirement are a score of 19 for
the reading portion of the ACT and 430 for the verbal portion of the SAT.
Please remember that grade 10 students are required to participate in the Grade 10 FCAT 2.0
Reading assessment, even if they earned a concordant score prior to test administration.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we worked to ensure that concordant scores used
for graduation continue to be equivalent measures of the level of performance expected on the
Grade 10 FCAT 2.0 Reading assessment. For more information about concordant scores and
assessment graduation requirements, you may refer to Graduation Requirements for Florida’s
Statewide Assessments posted at http://fcat.fldoe.org/pdf/fcatpass.pdf.

We All Need a Little Quality Time
Todos Necesitamos un Poco de Calidad de Tiempo
Quality time is the 20 minutes you take to read a
book together, or the 15 minutes you spend playing
a game of catch, or even the 5 minutes you take just
listening to your child talk about his/her day. Quality
means the “feel good stuff” that comes from
spending positive time with your child. Just about
everyone would agree that it’s not a matter of how
rich or poor you are, or how much education you
have, it’s what you do and say at home that has the
most positive impact on your child. Being a good
listener and having open communication with your
child are key elements of parent involvement.
