To classify this quadrilateral,
I went through three categories:
Quadrilaterals, Kites, and
Rhombuses.
What To Do
Work with a partner or by yourself.
1 Cut out the quadrilateral cards from Math Masters, page 266.
Put them facedown in a pile.
2 Choose a quadrilateral card. Classify it on the hierarchy. Start at the top.
Think about whether you can move it down to each subcategory.
Stop when you can’t go to the next subcategory.
3 Count the number of categories you passed through as you classified
your quadrilateral. Write down your count on paper.
4 Choose another card and classify the quadrilateral. Count how many
categories you pass through. Add it to your count from Step 3.
5 Continue choosing cards, classifying quadrilaterals, and counting
categories until you have passed through more than 15 categories in all.
Talk About It
Which quadrilaterals passed through the most categories? Why?
You can sometimes choose more than one path for classifying a quadrilateral.
How did you decide which path to use?
More To Do
Display all your quadrilateral cards face up. Repeat the activity, choosing the
cards that you think will help you finish the activity fastest.

a. Draw a quadrilateral with exactly
two right angles. Mark the right
angles.
a. Draw a quadrilateral with exactly
two lines of symmetry. Use dotted
lines to draw the lines of symmetry.
b. Classify your quadrilateral on the
hierarchy. List the categories you
passed through as you classified it.

a. Look at Problems 1 and 2. Were your answers to Parts b and c of each problem
the same?

a. All parallelograms have two pairs of parallel sides. Does this mean that all rectangles
have two pairs of parallel sides? Explain how you can tell by looking at the hierarchy.
