Needs of Living Things Characteristics of
Living Things
1. What is the main difference between a eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic cell?
Eukaryotic cells have their DNA inside the nucleus of the cell.
Prokaryotic cells have no nucleus. The DNA just floats in the cytoplasm.
2. How is a bacteria cell different from plant cells?
Bacteria cells are simple, have no nucleus (they are prokaryotes), and are very small.
Plant cells have complex organelles, have a nucleus (they are eukaryotes) and are larger.
3. What is the source of energy for most autotrophs? The sun
4. Draw and label major parts of a Eukaryotic Cell (nucleus, cell membrane, DNA)
5. Draw and label major parts of a Prokaryotic Cell (DNA, flagella, cilia, cytoplasm)
6. Know Cell Theory
All living things are made of cells. Cells are the basic unit of structure & function. Cells
come from other cells.
7. Know the Needs of all Living Things
Energy – a source of energy (food)
Water – to drink or live in
Shelter/Space – a place to get what they need (their environment)
Stable Internal Conditions (Homeostasis)
8. Know the six Characteristics of all living Things
Cells – are made of cells
Chemicals – similar chemicals CHO
Energy – use energy
Grow & Develop –
Respond to stimuli in their environment
Reproduce – make more of themselves (asexual or sexual)
9. Know the basic difference between Asexual and Sexual reproduction.
Asexual reproduction – each cell only has ½ of a DNA strand. They need DNA from two
different cells to make offspring.
Sexual reproduction – each cell can reproduce just by copying the same DNA and
making new cells.
10. Write 3 sentences showing a stimulus resulting in a response. Circle the stimuli and
underline the responses.
Answers will vary. Examples
a. A dog jumped into the water when the ball splashed in.
b. A fish swam away when the shark came by.
c. The school bus flashing lights came on and Susan stopped her car to wait for the kids
to get off.
