Thank you for purchasing Vinyl Flat’s Groovy Rings for 7-inch 45 RPM records. Because 45s vary by weight, surface condition and chemical composition there is no precise, “magical formula” for repairing warps and dishes on 45 RPM records with the Vinyl Flat - some experimentation on your part is required. Before using the Vinyl Flat, remove all protective paper from both sides of the 7” Groovy Rings and thoroughly clean the surface of the record, the Groovy Rings and the Vinyl Flat pieces. You can use the Vinyl Flat two ways: WITHOUT HEAT. When the Vinyl Flat is used this way (pressure only - at room temperature), it may take a very long time to reduce warps, but it is also the safest method. You simply place the clean 45 in the Vinyl Flat and secure the twist-on cap. At room temperature, results may take weeks or even months depending on the degree of warping, the weight of the record, the vinyl/chemical composition of the record and the ambient room temperature. This technique is recommended as the first step to repair extremely valuable 45s. WITH HEAT. The addition of heat greatly speeds-up the repair process. However excessive heat, when combined with pressure, can further deform and ruin a record, so carefully read and follow these instructions. IF USING A KITCHEN OVEN, DO NOT EXCEED A TEMPERATURE OF 150 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT (65° C) IF YOUR OVEN WILL NOT GO DOWN TO 150 DEGREES, USE THE OPTIONAL VINYL FLAT “GROOVY POUCH” DO NOT USE THE OVEN “PRE-HEAT” FUNCTION TO WARM-UP YOUR OVEN. SET YOUR OVEN TO “BAKE” AT 150° F (65° C) AND LET IT WARM-UP FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES BEFORE USING TO PROTECT THE VINYL FLAT FROM OVEN RACK SCRATCHES, PLACE THE VINYL FLAT ON A COOKIE SHEET OR TIN FOIL If you are using a kitchen oven, the key to success is to “sneak up” on the correct heating time that allows the pressure exerted by the Vinyl Flat to flatten the 45 playing surface. To ensure good results, always start with a 30-minute heating cycle, then remove the Vinyl Flat from the oven and let it cool for 30 minutes. If the cycle is not effective, REPEAT THE CYCLE BUT LENGTHEN THE HEATING TIME BY THREE (3) MINUTES. Always remove the Vinyl Flat from the oven after the heating cycle and wait until the Vinyl Flat is cool to the touch before removing the record from the Vinyl Flat. NOTE: An oven thermometer is strongly recommended to verify the oven temperature before using the Vinyl Flat with 45s. It is suggested that you stop using the Vinyl Flat once the warp or dish has been reduced to a playable level. Repeated exposure to heat and/or pressure to obtain a perfectly flat playing surface increases the chance of damaging record grooves and should be avoided. Therefore, two unique sets of 7” Groovy Rings have been designed for 45 RPM records. NOTE: The Vinyl Flat has only been tested with vinyl 45s. Styrene 45s have not been tested and may not be repairable with the Vinyl Flat. One set of 7” Groovy Rings has a large center hole to avoid contacting the center label of the 45. These rings only contact the actual playing surface of the 45. If the 45 you want to repair is heavily dished or has a warp that extends into or through the center label, then these rings may not be effective at completely removing the warp/dish. The other set of 7” Groovy Rings has a small center hole and contacts the entire surface of the 45, including the center label. Use this set of rings when you either have heavily-dished 45s, or, 45s that cannot be repaired by the other set of rings. Most 45s weigh between 30 and 40 grams and require less heating time than 12” LPs. As previously stated, when using a kitchen oven at 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees C), always start with a 30-minute heating cycle. After 30 minutes of heating, remove the Vinyl Flat from the oven and let the Vinyl Flat cool for about 30 minutes. Once the Vinyl Flat is cool to the touch, remove the 45 and check the 45 on your turntable. (If the warp is not reduced, repeat the process and increase the heating cycle to 33 minutes.) Good luck with your 45 repairs - we hope that you enjoy using your Vinyl Flat!
