Laser light doubles high beam range to 600m: Lighting technology from Osram enhances road safety In combination with other driver assistance functions, laser light technology, with ranges of up to 600 meters (2,000 feet), provides much better visibility for drivers at night and therefore makes a significant contribution to road safety. The best high beam range previously available is about 300 meters. Laser lights are the next stage in automotive lighting. Thanks to its high luminance, which is significantly greater than that of any other light source available today, and the smaller space requirements of laser light, headlights can be made even smaller than they are already. This opens up new ways to differentiate vehicles even more strikingly through new headlight designs and increase the recognition value of the brand. The laser boost, which is added to the high beam, offers the greatest beam range currently available (up to 600 meters) and therefore better visibility for the driver and greater road safety. This combination of design and functionality means the laser has enormous potential alongside the LED. Osram’s energy-efficient laser lighting, which includes some of the smallest technology components available, found its way into serial car production with the BMW i8, the BMW 7 series and the Audi R8 und R8 LMX as boosters added to the high beam.
