2015 May Kid Kick

Intelligence
— Noun — The
capacity for
understanding; ability to perceive and comprehend meaning.
Your brain is an amazing thing. It can hold millions of gigabytes of
information. It controls everything your body does automatically –
like breathing or pumping blood – and it holds all of the information
you learn through your lifetime – like katas or multiplication tables.
Each person’s brain picks up information in different ways; some
people learn better by reading information or seeing a task
performed, others learn best by listening to someone explain the
instructions. No matter which way you learn best, it is important to
keep learning new things. Our brain is a muscle and if you don’t
exercise it, it can get tired and weak.
This month, try to teach your brain something new. Learn the
alphabet in a different language, memorize a famous poem, or
master a new kick. Learning new things can be difficult, but focusing
on the way you will feel when you finally accomplish your goal will
make the work seem worthwhile.
Why did the sun go to school?
To get brighter!
Why do cows go to outer space?
To visit the milky way!
OCEANIC EXPLORATION
Around 71 percent of the Earth’s surface
is covered by oceans. The five oceans are
the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, and
Southern oceans and together, they contain 97 percent of the planet’s water. The
ocean is home to nearly half of all animal
species, and it plays an important role in
Earth’s climate and weather systems.
The largest ocean is the Pacific Ocean, which, by itself, covers 30 percent of
the planet. The Pacific is surrounded by an area called the Ring of Fire, where
a large number of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes take place. It also
contains about 25,000 different islands, which is more than any other ocean.
The Mariana Trench is the deepest known area of the Earth’s oceans. It is so
deep you could completely submerge the world’s tallest mountain, Mount
Everest, in it.
The second largest ocean is the Atlantic Ocean, which covers over 21 percent
of the Earth. In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first female pilot to fly solo
across this ocean. This flight took more than 20 hours! Today, pilots can cross
the Atlantic in only seven.

The Huichol Indians of Mexico are known
for their yarn paintings. The Huichols melt
beeswax in the sun and spread it over a
piece of wood. They then push colored
yarn into the wax to create images.
What You Need:
Scissors
Foamcore board or stiff cardboard
(Start small about 5in x 6in to 7in x 8in)
White glue or double stick tape
Yarn in lots of different colors
Instructions:
1. After deciding on an image, draw your
idea on the foamcore or cardboard,
taking care to leave lots of space between lines. (Remember, the yarn is
thicker than your pencil lines).
2. Make sure your yarn is cut into manageable lengths.
3. Spread a small amount of glue onto
your foamcore or cardboard.
4. Work left to right or right to left, filling in
as you go. Be sure to flatten the yarn
as you work and take care that no
background shows through between
the yarn.
Disruption (Noun) \ disˈrəpSH(ə)n \
Definition:
Disturbance or problems that interrupt an event, activity,
or process.
Example:
Having a substitute teacher was a disruption to their normal
schedule, but the second grade class took their science
test anyway.
We all have normal routines and schedules, and any change
in that schedule can be upsetting. We have to learn to adjust
to disruptions so we can keep moving forward and accomplishing
our goals.
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to
climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
~ Albert Einstein
