PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
17 February, 2017
Dear Community,
It has been a sad week for Mooroolbark College with the loss of former
student, Shannon Rigby. Our condolences are extended to his family and
friends. Shannon was a keen participant in our music department. He was
also an active sportsman, refereeing basketball and was a keen karate
student. Shannon had a close group of friends at the College who will miss
him, and his passing will affect the entire Mooroolbark College community. I
would like to remind the College community that we have a range of
supports in place for both current and past students. Please do not hesitate
to contact John Nichol at the College if you would like support.
Thank you to the PTCA for supporting the College by running the annual
Year 7 BBQ last week. The cool change came just in time to ensure we all
had a great evening. I enjoyed the opportunity to talk to our Year 7 parents
with their students. Many parents then took the opportunity to attend the
‘Compass Parent Training’. Mr Dane Keogh ran a very informative session
for parents/guardians.
I would like to encourage any parents/guardians who may have misplaced
their Compass login to contact the College. Compass is our main form of
communication with both parents/guardians and students so it is essential
that parents/guardians and students log on regularly. I also encourage
parents/guardians to use their own login and not simply use their child’s
login. The login provided to parents provides different functionality to
student logins.
Last week we held our first General Assembly for 2017.
General
assemblies are an important opportunity to get the whole school together to
celebrate student achievements, showcase the talent of Mooroolbark
College students, communicate with the entire school population and
provide further leadership opportunities for our students. The assembly
started with a musical item by Kay Ova Vishnina-Atanasova, Principal’s
Awards were then handed out along with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. It
was a wonderful start to the new year.
On Monday 13th February, Mooroolbark College held its annual Swimming
Carnival. Whilst the weather wasn’t as favourable in the morning as the
afternoon, the students again enjoyed a wonderful day. One of the
strengths of Mooroolbark College students is their willingness to participate
in a range of events. Again Croydon Memorial Swimming Pool was a sea of
red, green, yellow and blue. Once again our students’ behaviour was
great. We received complimentary comments from the pool management
and the community. I would also like to congratulate the student relay team
which beat both the staff teams in the 4 x 50 meter relay race.
Congratulations to the students who have progressed to the Division
Swimming Competition to be held on Monday 20th February. I wish you
every success for your upcoming events.

UNIFORM
In order to maintain the high standards associated with
our College, we would like to reaffirm the College
Uniform Policy in regards to jewellery. Jewellery worn
must be discreet and minimal.
Small studs and
sleepers are acceptable in ears. A single chain can be
worn around the neck.
Parents/guardians of Year 7 students should look out
for the vaccine consent card booklet coming home from
school with your child. You need to read the booklet and
complete and return Part A regardless of whether your
child is being vaccinated at school.
The Shire of Yarra Ranges immunisation service may
contact you about the Secondary School Vaccine
Program. Schools are authorised to provide basic
parent/guardian contact details to local councils for this
purpose. Contact the College by 28 February 2017 if
you do not want your contact details given to the Shire
of Yarra Ranges immunisation service.

JUNIOR CLUB 3/4
Junior Club 3/4 is a designated homework club for
students in Years 7-10. It runs from 3:00pm to 4:00pm
in the Library every Tuesday and Thursday.
During this time students have the ability to use school
computers, printers, work in groups or individually as
well as getting extra one on one support from teachers.
We try and create a relaxed work friendly
environment. So come along as we would love to see
you there.
VISITORS TO THE COLLEGE
It is essential that all visitors to the College sign in at the
General Office. If you require to see
any member of staff please be aware
that an appointment is necessary due
to
timetable
commitments
and
meetings before and after school. It is
inappropriate for visitors to go directly
to individual staff offices or to stop staff
in College grounds. The General
Office will call staff to check their
availability for an appropriate meeting time. If you would
like to make an appointment please do not hesitate to
contact the College on
9727 8100.
Shell and bead jewellery is not permitted. Multiple
bracelets/bangles/anklets are also not permitted. The
College Council is clear in its rules in regards to facial
piercing.
Facial jewellery is not permitted at the College.
Students can have a clear facial stud that does not
protrude from the skin and cannot be caught on
anything. This also includes ear jewellery that is sharp
or excessive.
Students wearing facial jewellery will be asked to
remove it and it will be placed in a
plastic bag and the student can pick
it up from the Student Administration
Office at the end of the day.
If students are contemplating having
facial piercing we highly recommend
that they do so during the school holidays, giving them
time to have it heal so they can put in a plastic plug
when they come back to school. It is best to plan these
things so the student isn’t faced with a difficult situation
of having to remove the piercing or be sent home from
school.
We thank you for your support.

YEAR 12 START UP DAY 2016
On Friday, February 10, we spent a day with the Year
12 students at the Baptist Church in Mooroolbark. The
day served several purposes. It provided an opportunity
for Year 12 students to mingle and get to know their
peers, to reflect on their schooling and how they would
like to finish their time at Mooroolbark College. There
were formalised presentations from Elevate – study
sensei and time management, and the day also
provided an opportunity for students to get to know the
Senior School team in an informal and relaxed manner.
Thank you to Mr Nichol, Mrs Roache, Mrs Davis, Mrs
Keogh, Mrs Stratford, Mr Olarenshaw and Mr U’Ren for
their support and assistance with the day.
