The Game explores the act of buying sex - the rules, the language and the
power structures. It’s a play that’s also a real-life game, with levels and
consequences. Five new men have volunteered each night. These men have
never played ‘The Game’ before. They’ve no idea what they’re about to do
and they won’t be given a script. They are doing this to be part of an event
– a symbolic act – that calls us all to consider, to think and to review. All you
have to do is watch.
Contains nudity, strong language, sexual references, violence and material
that some may find disturbing. 18+
‘Mad’ Mary McArdle (Seana Kerslake) returns to Drogheda after a short spell
in prison - for something she’d rather forget. Back home, everything and
everyone has changed. Her best friend, Charlene, is about to get married
and Mary is to be her maid of honour. When Charlene refuses Mary a ‘plus
one’ on the grounds that she probably couldn’t find a date, Mary becomes
determined to prove her wrong. ‘A Date for Mad Mary’ is a tough and tender
story about friendship, first love, and letting go of the glory days.

iconic, this late-period Alfred Hitchcock classic laid the groundwork for

Hitchcock pictures and is often listed as one of the greatest films of all time.

Vladimir and Anton Jablokov Live
FRI 05 MAY 8PM Main Auditorium €22 / €20 conc
Two elderly farmers, Eamon and Nashee, meet at a gate on a remote hillside.
These men are old friends, old rivals, old neighbours. They are men of heart,
of humour, of hardness. Their conversation is a throwback to a gentler time,
when silence was as telling as declaration, and meaning was more often
found between the lines than on them.
But there’s nothing gentle about today’s conversation. In facing the bitter
reality of their remote defiance, Eamon and Nashee have grown fearful
and desperate. Now they are forced to confront each other with some
heartbreaking truths that test their friendship to its limit. After today, will
they ever again talk on this hillside?
Vladimir and Anton are Slovakian sibling musicians with a shared rare gift
– mastery of the classical violin. These young virtuosos have been playing
together for almost 20 years. This thrilling collision of sound, performance,
ancestry and rivalry combines to wonderful effect in Vladimir & Anton’s
must-see live concerts, and on their debut album, recorded live onstage in
Ireland. Expect to hear Flight of the Bumblebee, Shostakovich Waltz, Dance
of the Nights, Dark Eyes, Those Were The Days and many more.
Starring Vladimir & Anton Jablokov with Adam Kuruc (Piano) & Peter
Vizvari (Double Bass).

‘The Quiet Land’ is a celebration of the humour, resilience and endearing
innocence of an exiled generation as it struggles to survive in the isolated
rural Ireland of today. It is Malachy McKenna’s heartfelt tribute to a rare
breed of forgotten men who live a long way in off the road.

Waves is the story of Elizabeth Moncello, of her youth growing up
on a small Australian island in the 1930s and how she came to be
the unofficial inventor of the butterfly stroke. An intimate theatrical
event combining highly expressive storytelling, delicate movement and
splashes of humour to tell Elizabeth’s amazing tale of a life fully lived.
Waves is about having an idea and the courage, drive and desire to
follow it through - to swim against the tide of history and expectations,
and to achieve something that is truly incredible.
Rita is tired of her humdrum existence. Her adult children are getting
on her nerves and she misses her best pal Mary. It’s time to spice up her
life! Creaking is based on the lives of real-life Irish people in later years. It
explores the everyday challenges and pressures facing us as we age and how
we attempt to defy stereotypes. Presented as a staged reading this moving
and funny drama documentary will have a new cast of volunteers each
night and includes a free post-show discussion with the writer, director and
members of the cast.

SAT 20 MAY 8PM Main Auditorium €20 / €16 conc / €12 (under 12s)
FRI 19 MAY 8PM Main Auditorium €18 / €16 conc
Giselle is a haunting story of love and betrayal. Our modern re-telling of
this romantic classic is a timeless tale about the redemptive power of love.
Betrayed by Albrecht, Giselle dies of a broken heart but her spirit returns to
protect and forgive her now repenting lover from death at the hands of the
vengeful Wilis. Choreographed by Ludovic Ondiviela, former Royal Ballet
dancer and choreographer, this production of love that transcends death, will
capture the hearts and minds of audiences today.
Theatre Royal Productions presents Sing Street star Don Wycherley in the
touching and entertaining ‘My Real Life’ by Eoin Colfer. Wexford man Noel
has advanced MS and decides to end it all. While waiting for his overdose to
take effect he records an increasingly rambling message for his best friend.
Noel has apologies to make and messages to send. He has love in his heart
and he wants to declare it even if it’s already too late. Noel spends what is
possibly the last hour of his life re-living the highs and lows of the past forty

Donegal sisters Karen, Lorna and Joleen, collectively known as The Henry Girls,
have found a way to personalise their music and steeped as they are in tradition,
successfully nourish the seeds of old with a bright, refreshing approach. They
have a knack for creating authentic original material, rich in traditional values.
Their tight three-part harmonies are matched by soulful musicianship across
a range of instruments including harp, fiddle, accordion, ukulele, banjo and
piano. This Spring saw them release their 6th studio album, produced by Calum
Malcolm (Blue Nile, Heidi Talbot), called ‘Far Beyond The Stars’.
Charlie is a kleptomaniac - the doctor told her. Reckons it stems from
childhood trauma. But she has the robbin’ completely under control these
days. For real. She has a bit of a mouth on her, but she’s only trying to be
funny, give everyone a laugh, not cause trouble, like. Not today, of all days.
She loves that little boy more than she ever thought it was possible to love
another human. There’s a lot riding on these 24 hours, and if she keeps her
head down, she’ll get him back. Directed by Aaron Monaghan.

Work on Leonard Cohen’s requiem, Between Your Love and Mine, began
last summer. Using only the music and words of Leonard Cohen and with
the singer’s full cooperation, writer John MacKenna devised a piece of
theatre which features a broad range of Cohen’s work, sung and spoken
- excerpts from Cohen’s Book of Mercy; a late and unpublished poem;
songs from across the singer’s career and arrangements of later work - to
produce a requiem that not only remembers young friends and those who
mourn them but also, ironically, commemorates Leonard Cohen, whose
unexpected death came just two weeks after he had approved the final
draft of Between Your Love and Mine.

Artist Eamon O’Kane will transform the Ground Floor Gallery space into
an interactive playful installation inspired by the educational play objects
devised by educator and inventor of Kindergarten, Friedrich Fröbel. The
installation comprises a number of elements including drawings, paintings
and educational play materials known as Fröbel Gifts – colourful spheres,
cylinders and tubes. These ‘gifts’ are used for unlocking creativity at an
early age by teaching children about three-dimensional shapes and colours
and their relationship to the environment and nature. The installation
continues in the First Floor Gallery with projected animations and a
response/play area.
Eamon O’Kane has exhibited widely and is the recipient of many awards
and scholarships including the Taylor Art Award, The Tony O’Malley Award
and a Fullbright Award. He has had over forty solo exhibitions including
shows in Berlin, Frankfurt, Dublin, Zurich, New York and London and is
Professor of Visual Art at Bergen Academy of Art & Design, Norway.
A History of Play is on loan from The Model, home of The Niland
Collection, Sligo.
School Portraits takes the viewer into the world of school to see
contemporary artists’ representations of young people, school buildings
and the wide range of activities and experiences that go on during a school
day. The exhibition presents work by sculptor John Ahearn, photographer
Mandy O’Neill and painter Blaise Smith who have immersed themselves,
often for extended periods of time, to create bodies of work that capture
the rich and varied moods and lived experiences of Irish school life. The
exhibition will also include new work produced in a collaborative project
between filmmaker Kilian Waters, Draíocht Curator-in-Residence, Sharon
Murphy and Room 13, Dublin 15. From classroom to playground, from
close-up to group studies, from painting-from-life to filmed testimonials,
this exhibition offers an extended portrait of school and an insight into the
thoughts and feelings of young people who go there every day.
Room 13 International is a network of student-run arts studios in schools
and community settings worldwide. Room 13 Scoil Bhríde National School
and Room 13 Tyrrelstown Educate Together National School both located
in Dublin 15 are the first two Room 13 studios to open in the Republic of
Ireland. Room 13 Fingal is an initiative of Fingal County Council Arts Office.

Limitless is an immersive digital installation by artist Aoife Dunne which
focuses on her preoccupation with perfection and fear of inadequacy.
She is interested in the relationship between costume and identity and
the creation of large-scale environments. The artist moves fluidly between
physical and digital worlds presenting her work with deliberate childlike
playfulness and absurdity. In this piece, Aoife creates a video game and
recreates the 2D game environment in the physical, allowing the viewer
to enter the work. Limitless explores the desire to continuously recreate
oneself in a never-ending cycle of self-construction driven by self-critique.
Aoife Dunne is an award winning artist and recent graduate in Fine Art
Media from NCAD. Outside of the studio Aoife works as a Creative Director
and Stylist, the experience of which strongly influences her practice.

If we have two eyes, they why is our vision so limited? Why do we have
so little depth perception? Why don’t our two eyes offer us two different
views of the world? Why don’t they allow us to look behind and in front at
the same time, or sideways in both directions? Cleary Connolly’s metaperceptual helmets ingeniously invite us to set aside our preconceptions
and to experience things in ways quite different from the norm. Wearing the
helmets, you become a hybrid creature yourself, part human, part machine,
part animal, but also: part work of art. A work of art that challenges those
who contemplate the helmet - from the inside or from the outside - to take
a new perspective on the world.
Artists Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly have spent several years developing
an extraordinary series of helmets, art that can help us to explore these and
other mysteries of visual perception. The collection has been hand-crafted
in aluminium by master coach-builder Neil McKenzie and will be on view in
Draíocht for two days only.

Studio Incubation Residencies
10 APR – 01 JUN 2017
Draíocht Studio Incubation Residency
Draíocht is delighted to announce Sarah Ward and Louis Haugh as the first
two artists invited to participate in INCUBATE - a series of Studio Incubation
Residencies designed to support young and emerging artists and curators
from Fingal in giving time and space to research and develop new work.
The next series of residencies take place late 2017 and early 2018. We
are interested to hear from young and emerging artists and curators
from Fingal whose interests lie in one or more of the following: inter
disciplinary practice; visual culture and new technologies; socially engaged
and collaborative practices; work for and with children and young people.
Sarah Ward has just completed the first Studio Incubation Residency and
Louis Haugh will begin his residency in April. If you would like to register
your interest in applying for INCUBATE, contact Sharon Murphy, Draíocht
Curator-in-Residence at [email protected].
Closing date for applications / 02 JUN 2017
Sarah Ward
16 JAN – 24 FEB 2017
Draíocht Studio Incubation Residency
Sarah Ward is a visual artist from Dublin 15. Her practice revolves around
the notion of virtual space in relation to the viewer’s experience of reality
when you stand before a piece of art. This reality occupies an imagined
space that cannot be physically accessed, but yet has an ability and power
to immerse the spectator. Sarah explores the relationship between art and
space to consider how places are occupied, which at times can be transitory.
Through a process of using paint to abstract our existing reality, she aims to
develop an alternative space to the arbitrary presumptions of physical reality.
While in Draíocht, she has developed a new body of work arising from her
preoccupations. Sarah works regularly at the National Gallery and she is
currently in Venice working at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum.

Photo Paula Alvarez
Louis Haugh is a visual artist working both independently and collaboratively
in Dublin with photography, sound and installation. Originally from
Hartstown in Dublin 15, Louis’ work focuses on a contextual perception
of people and places. Drawing on photography’s rich cultural history of
practice to make visible these otherwise incorporeal relationships, Louis
makes work that looks to represent his subjects with a new sense of
knowledge or indeed distorted perception. Louis curates events, screenings
and performances at The Darkroom’s studio in Stoneybatter. A recent
series of screening events included three installments of Food Shorts,
a curated evening of short films, each followed with a course of food to
match. Reoccurring themes in the screenings include; gender, sexuality,
social identity and patriarchal inequality.
During the Studio Incubation Residency at Draíocht Louis will develop a
performative tour of the grounds of the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre,
examining the role of an Arts Centre within the context of its location.
Drawing on his interest in a perceived perception of a place, Louis is looking
to engage with the physical structure of a shopping centre –vs- the socially
constructed idea we have of a shopping centre. During the residency, Louis
will also develop a screening programme which connects personal identity
with Blanchardstown’s ever growing demographics.

Michael McLoughlin
Collpasing Horse
Artist In Residence 2017
Theatre Artists In Residence 2016 / 2017
Michael McLoughlin is Draíocht’s Artist in Residence 2017. The approach to
the residency is different than in previous years, as this time we are going
outside Draíocht’s building. Michael will be working primarily in Mulhuddart,
where he will develop work relating to the area with groups he meets over
the course of this year.
In February Collapsing Horse continued working with Draíocht’s very
talented and dedicated D15 Youth Theatre. Last year we worked with
puppetry and the idea that theatre is a combination of ‘illusion and
the thing you can’t fake’. This year, participants will be working with
Choreographer, Liv O’Donoghue and Collapsing Horse Director, Dan Colley
to explore movement, expression and storytelling. We’ll be asking; What
can be communicated through the movement of the body that can’t be
communicated through words? What does it feel like to dance and to
watch people dancing? And how can we create beautiful, interesting and
moving choreography ourselves?
Michael works in a wide variety of media including drawing, video, sculpture
and sound and is interested in new ways of making and presenting work
that reflects particular social contexts. His work explores the relationship
between public spaces, institutions and the public they serve and seeks
to create a common meeting ground between them. As part of his
practice he records audio conversations between groups of people who
are connected through clubs, associations or community activities. He
describes this as ‘audio cartography’, a process of mapping the sonic space
that conversations occupy, so they can be recreated for exhibition now and
in the future.
This year for Draíocht, Michael will work alongside people, groups and clubs
all over Mulhuddart to create a new body of work for exhibition in 2018.
Michael’s residency at Draíocht will also be central to his practice-based
doctoral studies in UCD School of Sociology focused on participation,
ethics and relationship building in context based art practices.
This is all just the start of a year of activity which will include workshops for
primary school students, rehearsals of our new show The Water Orchard,
the beginnings of a Dance / Theatre piece for children and performances of
Collapsing Hose shows from our repertoire.
The Collapsing Horse Draíocht Residency is supported by Fingal County
Council and the Arts Council.
You can find out more about the residency and contact Michael through

Four zoo animals are shipped back to their homeland by an animal rights
group that feels they belong in the wild. When the ship capsizes, the animals
find themselves stranded in Madagascar. Having had humans care for them
their entire life, they know nothing about survival and must work together
with the locals to help them fit in.
For this sensory friendly screening the volume is lowered, the auditorium
lights are left on at a low level so the auditorium won’t be in total darkness,
we have restricted the capacity and viewers can make noise and move
around the auditorium space if they wish.

Draíocht’s Artist in Your Classroom Initiative
Workshops in your classroom with Draíocht’s Artists
MON 03 APR – FRI 16 JUN 2017
This programme aims to provide a range of high quality arts experiences
for Primary school pupils and teachers in your own classroom, facilitated by
Draíocht’s professional artists. Your school can choose from two specially
selected and purposefully created school workshops. This Season, pupils
will have the opportunity to create cartoons with Alan Nolan or bring out
their dramatic side with drama with Eimear Morrissey. Workshops are
tailored to your class’s age and abilities and will work with two separate
classes each day.
Drama in Your Classroom
Age: Adaptable to all age ranges
Dur: Junior / Senior Infants: 4 class group workshops of 45 mins
2nd Class+ : 2 class group workshops of 1.5 hours
Artist: Eimear Morrissey
Cartoons in Your Classroom
Age: 2nd – 6th Class Dur: 2 class group workshops of 1.5 hours
Artist: Alan Nolan
Using some of our favourite fairytales as a starting point, facilitator Eimear
introduces pupils to the wonderful world of theatre through imaginative
storytelling and fun collective group games. The workshop will explore
different ways of engaging the imagination, of thinking creatively, seeing,
listening, new ways of communicating and expression, as well as building
confidence. Pupils will work together towards a common goal of creating
a short improvised performance piece, giving pupils the opportunity to
experience the creation of something from nothing!
WORKSHOP NOTES & BOOKINGS
This Cartoons Capers workshop consists of a short, hilariously funny talk by
author Alan Nolan (who worked with Draíocht in 2016 on our Lucky Penny
2016 Project) and then the children join in as Alan gives a step-by-step
drawing demonstration of one of the comical characters from his books.
They then create their own mini-comic book using materials and help that
Alan provides. Every pupil gets to bring home their own comic book.
