Nine Blue Jays qualify for state

Nine Blue Jays qualify for state
Published February 14 2011
An injury to Jamestown High School sophomore Ryan Hillerud, combined with an ill Zane Braun,
turned Saturday’s West Region Wrestling Tournament into somewhat of a mediocre day for the Blue
Jays.
The Jays finished seventh overall after tallying 93 team points, but on the positive side of the things
the Blue Jays did qualify a total of nine wrestlers for the state Class A individual wrestling
tournament, slated to get underway on Friday at the Fargodome.
“We had an OK weekend,” said JHS coach Greg White. “We were hoping to qualify more, and some
were going to have an outside shot to beat someone who was seeded to make it, and it just didn’t
happen for us. What was on paper was what happened.”
Hillerud injured a thumb early last week and re-aggravated the injury Saturday. The 145-pounder
finished his sophomore season 22-12.
“He hurt (his thumb) again in his first match, and after that he really couldn’t use it,” White said. “He
wrestled hard, but he was wrestling one handed and couldn’t do what he wanted to do.”
Braun, a sophomore at 152, was sick all last week, but he was still able to finish the tournament
where he was seeded. Braun took sixth after falling to Minot’s David Rabe, 4-2.
“The one thing we considered with him was if he was still feeling bad on Saturday the way he did on
Thursday and Friday, we might have just wrestled him in one match to get him qualified and get him
out,” White said. “It wasn’t a banner day, but he did OK, especially for how he felt.”
Braun (24-14) didn’t earn a seed for this week’s state tournament. He’s scheduled to take on West
Fargo’s No. 5-seeded Zach Neer (34-7) on Friday.
Other Blue Jays finishing where they were seeded were seniors Brent Mittleider (34-5) and Clay
Greenwood (11-19) at 140 and 285, respectively, and sophomore Jaden Horsted (27-12) at 112.
Mittleider placed second, falling to Bismarck’s Joe Schumacher (26-2) 14-1 in the 140-pound
championship bout. Schumacher and Mittleider are seeded 1-2, respectively, for this week’s state
tournament.
Schumacher has defeated Mittleider in all three matches the pair have faced each other in this year.
Greenwood placed fifth, pinning Williston’s Ty Bakken 25 seconds in. Greenwood is unseeded for
state, and will face Bismarck Century’s No. 5-seeded Joe Jackson (25-8) in the opening round.
Horsted finished fourth, and is seeded seventh for state where he’ll meet up with Mandan’s Blake
Allickson (10-15).
“Clay had a good day. He got some pins for the team and wrestled well,” White said. “I think Jaden
can feel good about his day, being seeded seventh for state.”
Jamestown’s Alek Dallman (17-13), Eathan Gumke (14-23) and Donovan Zuck (22-14) all finished
better than where they were seeded on Saturday.
Dallman was seeded sixth at 135 and ended up fifth, Gumke was seeded seventh at 160 and
finished sixth, while Zuck was seeded sixth at 215 and wound up fifth. Dallman won his fifth-place
match with an 11-1 major decision over Dickinson’s Ryder Peterson, and Zuck pinned Turtle
Mountain’s Devin Morin.
Dallman, a sophomore, is seeded eighth for state, while Zuck is seeded sixth. Gumke is unseeded,
and will face No. 1 Brandon Larson (28-3) of Valley City.
Jamestown’s other two state qualifiers are Mitch Ova at 119 (17-18) and Nick Erickson at 189 (2012). Ova finished seventh Saturday after being seeded fifth, while Erickson finished third after being
seeded second.
Erickson earned the No. 7 seed for the state, while Ova is unseeded.
“We were disappointed with (our team finish). We knew Zane wasn’t going to get the normal points
he would get, he’s a pinner, and Ryan hurting his hand,” White said. “It was the kind of day as an
overall team where we couldn’t put together the extra effort to climb another notch or two.”
White said finishing 9th at state with nine wrestlers is the goal for the Jays this weekend.
“With taking nine there, we are not going to be one of the power houses. With 17 teams, we’d like to
be right in the middle or higher,” White said. “No. 9 is the goal.”
