• Compare the development of

• In the beginning South Carolina was ruled by the
Eight Lords Proprietors who had political
control over the land granted to them by the king
• In order to attract more settlers the proprietors
decided to share some political power with
property owners.
• A political elite developed in Carolina and in
other colonies based on economic status.

There were three types of governments in the English colonies during the 1600s.
These governments were royal, proprietary, or self-governing.

• Settlements grew in SC, the
Proprietary government failed to
provide many of the services listed
above.
• As a result, settlers decided they
wanted to become a Royal Colony,
ruled directly by the King of England.

• SC colonists appointed their own
governor and ask for help from the
King
• King appointed temporary royal
governor, negotiated the land with the
Proprietors
• Ten years later, SC became a royal
colony- Much like today change
doesn’t happen over night!

statement would be a pro or a con for the colonists
• I will model analyzing the first statement
• We will analyze a statement together
• Students will finish then compare in groups working
to come to a consensus about each statement.
