Danielson ...... 13 Introductory Letter From Guy Dear Friend: I’m Dr. Guy O. Danielson, III from Precision Spine Care, and I would like to hear from you. But first, please call me Guy. Has suffering from pain ever prevented you from working or living the kind of life you’d like to live? If so, I urge you to read this report, Top 10 Things to Know When Choosing Your Doctor for Neck, Back, Leg, or Hip Pain. With years of experience, I know that if you leave pain untreated, or worse, get bad medical advice or undergo unnecessary surgery, you may only add to your health problems. Doing nothing or making poor choices can result in continued pain or even permanent damage. Because of that, it’s important to evaluate your all of options completely, so that you can make an informed and practical decision. As a long time neurosurgeon who has successfully treated thousands of patients with debilitating pain, I truly empathize with you. You don’t need to continue to suffer. Choosing your doctor can make all the difference between dealing with pain in the shortterm, and fixing the actual problem. Ultimately, I want to help you get better. If at any time you have questions, please contact me. For additional resources and information, visit my website www.GuyDanielson.com. If you want to schedule a consult with me or have a second opinion, call 903.467.3898. 01 Number 1: How Much Experience Does The Doctor Have? Clearly, you want to feel confident that the doctor who treats your pain has experience, and lots of it. But, how can you tell? You can always do research on the Internet and/or ask friends and family to recommend doctors they’ve had success with. Sooner or later, however, you will need to make an appointment to meet with a doctor in-person. Especially if you are considering surgery, come prepared with a list of questions like these to address their recommendations: How many pain operations have you performed for people with my condition? What percentage of these patients report satisfaction from a successful outcome? What are my non-surgical options? Who would you recommend I see for a second opinion? If a doctor balks at answering any of these questions, it may indicate inexperience or a poor track record. Top-notch surgeons will never feel threatened when you ask questions. Instead, they should welcome them and answer with clarity and precision – making sure that you leave feeling confident in their responses. He always welcomes your questions. 02 Number 2: Do They Have A Strong Team Behind Them? Success does not happen in a vacuum. As in any other profession, medical doctors learn from each other’s experiences – both good and bad. A solo practitioner has much less knowledge to draw from than a team of specialists who advance their skills by observing or listening to others on their team. Simply, it just makes sense that shared information makes for better diagnoses and care. Additionally, doctors who work in teams have the increased ability to provide state-of-the-art imaging devices, modern equipment, administrative support and an excess of brain power required to keep track of today’s rapidly changing state of healthcare! Schedule your FREE 20-minute phone consultation with Guy Danielson, MD of Tyler, Tx | 903-467-3898|www.GuyDanielson.com Page 5 Ultimately, you will want to choose a facility that offers an all-in-one back and neck pain center, as pain in your neck, back, hip, leg, etc. is often related. At Precision Spine Care, we combine the expertise of fellowship-trained spine surgeons, non-surgical spine MDs, interventional pain specialists, physician assistants experienced in spine and on-the-job injury, and spine-specialized physical therapists. The spine center assembles all these spine care specialists, along with X-ray, MRI diagnostics, an injection suite, and an ambulatory surgery center — all under one roof for the convenience of those with back and neck pain. 04 Number 4: Do They Take A Consultative Approach? Yes, you’re in pain, but is surgery really your best or only option? Let’s face it. You want to work with a doctor who educates you, and together you make an informed decision for your treatment. Each case is unique and your doctor should explore all options with you. Most doctors who perform neurosurgery for pain advertise board certification publically because it tells prospective patients they have at least 4 years of specialty training beyond medical school. If you would like to review a list of Dr. Danielson’s professional publications and presentations at national profession meetings, simply ask him for a copy of his Curriculum Vitae (CV). 06 Number 6: Are They A Pioneer? From the beginning of time, pioneers have helped map new trails. Pioneering doctors have amazing instincts that let them identify and develop new solutions. Such doctors are constantly researching and exploring new solutions. At the same time, they also know when to not implement a new type of treatment. You have to be discerning as to which treatments will work safely. He is the first board-certified neurosurgeon in East Texas. Also, he was a leader in the building of the Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, one of the largest employers in Tyler and one of the top ten hospitals in the United States. Because of Dr. Danielson’s expertise, doctors and others on the national level often consult with him about pain and spine issues. 07 Number 7: Do They Display Good Bedside Manner? Obviously, you want to feel comfortable and cared for by your doctor. Many patients of Dr. Danielson tell him they feel very comfortable and they feel they can talk to him about anything. His patients feel like royalty. By the way, if you go to see Dr. Danielson, he insists you call him Guy. He doesn’t rush through an exam, because he likes to go deep and get down to the core problem that’s causing your pain. Some doctors tend to interrupt you within 7 seconds of you talking … not Guy. He’ll listen carefully when you tell him your problems or ask your questions. He makes it his business to educate you until you feel totally comfortable that your questions have been answered. You may find some doctors pompous and arrogant. With Guy, you’ll soon realize that he is down to earth and makes you feel at home. He loves people and even more, he loves helping people. 08 Number 8: Do They Use A Holistic Approach? Some doctors are one trick ponies. You have pain; they do surgery. Doctors who take a holistic approach give you more options. Schedule your FREE 20-minute phone consultation with Guy Danielson, MD of Tyler, Tx | 903-467-3898|www.GuyDanielson.com Page 10 From the very beginning of his training, Guy has believed and promoted the power of the mind and the power of positive thinking. He knows that a secret behind some of his patients’ success is them thinking and believing that they will get well. In fact, Guy will even recommend yoga, meditation, chiropractic care, or acupuncture when he thinks those types of activities will help ease the pain. Additionally, if you have other ideas about ways to get better, he is always interested in discussing them with you. 09 Number 9: Is He Or She Truthful About Lasers? If a surgeon or chiropractor offers to treat your back pain with lasers, please seek another opinion! “Laser spine surgery” is nothing but a great marketing gimmick. Lasers work great for soft tissue eye surgery, but any surgeon who says he or she uses it to cut bone is simply not telling the truth. It makes no sense to use laser treatment for a number of reasons: 1. Although lasers can cut disc tissue, for a doctor to mechanically grab a disc fragment to stop it from compressing a nerve is faster, easier and obtains far more reliable results. 2. Because discs sit so close to the roots of the nerves, a doctor could do serious, permanent damage by using a laser. 3. A surgeon can’t cut bone with one, so lasers are of no use at all to decompress patients that suffer from spinal stenosis. If you absolutely must see someone who tells you they use lasers for spines, please be sure to ask whether they are board certified. Insist on it. Schedule your FREE 20-minute phone consultation with Guy Danielson, MD of Tyler, Tx | 903-467-3898|www.GuyDanielson.com Page 11 Guy has performed thousands of successful procedures to treat pain, without lasers. In addition, he’s developed pioneering technologies and believes in the power of “alternative” treatments. One thing he would never do is put a laser next to the nerves in your neck or spine. 10 Number 10: Reviews And A Great Reputation Finally, you want to be sure that any doctor you put your faith in has a great reputation. Just like some check restaurant reviews before eating out, or hotel reviews before going away, you should also check online reviews of your doctor before starting treatment. For your convenience, read some of the five star Facebook and HealthGrades reviews that Dr. Danielson’s patients proudly gave him: “Dr. Danielson did a fusion for me in December 1999 and it's been a success.
