President’s Letter by Stewart Cockrell
Our October block party was fun for the
whole family, with plenty of food, dessert
contest, music and activities for the kids.
The winner of the dessert contest was
Judy Wester, with her decadent Sinfully
Good Angel Strata Pie dessert. The
Chocolate Fudge Cheesecake made by
Nina Koch followed closely in 2nd place.
Be sure to check out Judy’s dessert
recipe on page 3. Thanks to Chris Yetts,
our neighborhood State Farm agent,
for providing the prizes for 2nd and 3rd
place!
Special thanks go out to Tricia Sterling
and Renee Cavin for organizing the event,
and volunteers from the neighborhood
Men’s Club for set up and break down.
The Long Run and Santa Fe Trail events
went off without a hitch again this year.
Each year these events raise invaluable
funds to help maintain these precious
neighborhood resources. Each year
these events get bigger and bigger, and
presents neighbors a great volunteer
opportunity. If you are interested in
participating next year, please mark your
calendar and look for reminders in the
newsletter.
At
the October
neighborhood
association meeting, Pryce Tucker from
our neighborhood crime committee,
presented the latest crime statistics and
shared some best practices for preventing
future break-ins. It is my pleasure to
Want to get more involved in the
neighborhood? It’s not too late. Our
annual association board election
takes place at our quarterly meeting in
January. If you are interested in running

announce that Lakewood Hills crime
numbers continue to fall from last year.
This is in great part to vigilance of our
neighbors, your neighborhood crime
watch and citizen requested increased
police patrols. Although the crime
numbers are down, the seriousness
of the crimes have gotten worse. Most
of the offenses have been car breakins, but we have had several daytime
burglaries and a couple of stolen cars.
Please see the monthly crime report
for details, and remember to call 911 to
report any suspicious behavior.

A Season for Giving
2013 LHNA Board
Thanks to everyone who donated food for our Second Annual
Fall Food Drive! We had a great response for this being our
second year. We were able to collect about 100 canned goods
for the North Texas Food Bank. Each month agency pantries
distribute food to more than 50,000 families and on-site meal
programs serve 435,000 meals/snacks. If you were not able
to drop off cans at the block party, I will be collecting cans
until November 15th. Just drop them off on my porch at 7239
Coronado Ave.
After five years serving on the neighbborhood board, Stewart
Cockrell, will be steppinng down as president and we need a
volunteer from the neighborhood to fill his shoes! The purpose
of our Board is to promote and preserve the well-being and
protection of the neighborhood; assure its beauty, safety, and
stability, plus encourage neighborliness and pride with mutual
respect. If you’re interested in serving on the board please
contact Betsy Porter, the nomination chair at
[email protected].
Each year the Neighborhood Association also sponsors a
holiday toy drive for Toys for Tots. When you are out shopping
this month, please pick up a new unwrapped toy for a 0 12 year old or you can also write a check (Marine Toys for
Tots Foundation). Please bring your toy donatin to the Holiday
Party on Tuesday, December 4th at Matt’s on Skillman.

to renew, don’t worry, we will be mailing out the surveys and
renewal form the first week in November. This year there are
two ways to pay and complete your survey! You can mail in
your survey and dues or you can complete the survey and
pay your membership online. Just go to Shop on our website

This 2011 modern farmhouse, designed by architect-owner
Eddie Maestri, AIA, was inspired in part by his greatgrandparents' home in the New Orleans garden district.
The home was designed around a traditional archetype,
but reveals a modern interior consisting of clean lines and
strong attention to detail. Furnishings and art demonstrate
the owners’ fondness for Mid-century Modern, their love of
travel and a connection to the architect-owner’s New Orleans
roots.

Latin deli: Mom, Pop & Oscar
by Rachel Pinn
Driving around the ‘hood one Saturday, I noticed a green
and orange sign that read “Latin Deli” on the southeast
corner of Northwest Highway and Abrams. Now, I’m always
on the lookout for a good sandwich, and I have been heard
complaining to anyone who will listen about the distinct lack
of decent sandwiches in East Dallas.
The menu is simple; seven sandwiches, a dozen coffee and
espresso drinks, cupcakes, pastries, cold drinks, juices,
smoothies and a few brunch items on Saturdays and Sundays.
Walking in, the place isn’t much to look at; bright paint and a
bar with barstools line each of the walls, and there’s a simple
kitchen with a big flat top where food is cooked to order. While
Fernando Barerra, one of the owners, made me a cafe con
leche, I asked him about the place. Turns out that he, his wife
Lydia and the cook Oscar all spent 10 years working at a
number of La Duni restaurants, getting the Borgas’ blessing
before opening up Latin Deli.
The sandwich menu features a classic Cuban, a pineapple
pork and a Butifarra with Peruvian ham. I ordered the chicken
salad, which was an interesting spin on the American classic
and the lomo saltado, which is stuffed with chunks of steak
and sautéed onions in a soy-spiked sauce. Both are served
on warm ciabatta. They’re experimenting with crepes, adding
both a sweet and savory version to their Saturday and Sunday
menu. Also coming is a chicken sandwich, “for people who
don’t like mayo.” Many of the ingredients they use at Latin
Deli are imported, from Peru, Mexico and more.
All in all, Latin Deli is a great place to grab a sandwich at a
good value. It’s family-owned by folks with the experience to
make something really great.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL by kelly Cockrell
Have you ever wanted your
vehicle washed and detailed
without doing it yourself
or leaving the house?
Well, you're in luck! Fellow
Coronado Ave resident Nina
Koch has a service, 103 Auto
Detailing, that does just that.
Nina will come to your home
and detail your vehicle while you're at home relaxing. She's
been detailing vehicles for more then 20 years.
KC: How does your service work?
NK: We set up an appointment and I come to your house
on a Saturday or Sunday to detail your car. There are only a
few things I need from you: a shady spot, a reachable water
hose/water and an electrical outlet. I'll bring the rest.
KC: What are your prices?
NK: Cars/Small SUVS = $95 | Mid Size SUV/Trucks = $125
Large SUV/Trucks = $150
KC: What does a detail consist of?
NK: Hand wash, towel dry and wax
- Interior full detail (clean windows, vacuum entire vehicle,
wipe dash, console and thoroughly clean door jams)
- Clean & Dress Tires and Wheels
KC: Are there any restrictions?
NK: I have a limit of 10-miles one way from zip 75214, after
that there's a mileage fee and it can’t be raining.
KC: Do you have any deals for the neighborhood?
NK: For a limited time, each paying friend you refer, will earn
you $25 off your next detail. So, tell all your friends!
KC: Do you have a website?
NK: Yes, please visit and book your appointment at
www.103autodetailing.com. Also, go "Like" my Facebook
page “103autodetailing.”

Living by White Rock Lake, there are also a couple of big
races to be aware of. The Dallas Running Club hosts their Half

go ahead and put the Dallas Marathon (formerly White Rock
Marathon) on your calendar as well - December 9th. Visit their
websites to see course maps, times, etc.

You may notice this column looks a bit different this month.
We’re going to try a new format, and as always, we welcome
your feedback! Hopefully most of you ‘like’ Lakewood Hills on
Facebook, and have found it to be a convenient and direct
way to communicate with lots of neighbors at once. It really is
a fantastic page with lots of information being posted all the
time, and the immediacy of response can’t be beat.
So it seems a perfect place to go for something this column
has struggled to provide: service provider referrals. If you’re
looking for someone to paint your house, mow your lawn, fix
your plumbing, rewire your electrical, clean your house or
care for your pet snakes, just post that request on the handy
Lakewood Hills Facebook page! Chances are you’ll get some
answers, and fast.
If by some chance you are not on Facebook, no worries. Just
let me know you’d like me to post a referral request on your
behalf, and I’ll be happy to do so! Forward we march…
Happy Birthday!
A big birthday shout out to our very own Kelly Cockrell, who
celebrates her day of birth November 11th. Hope you have a
great one, Kelly!
If you haven’t caught Avenue Q yet (adults only, please!), it’s
been extended through December 9th at Theatre Three in the
Quadrangle.
Autumn at the Arboretum continues (Chihuly exhibit has
been extended through December 30) with their much-loved
pumpkin patch. Don’t miss the Lakewood Home Festival
November 9th – 11th, benefiting local schools and including a
beautiful new build right on Coronado Avenue!
The Y will close the doors to their current space November
8th and move into their new, temporary location across the
street on November 12th. November 17th they’ll hold an open
house – visit their website for more details, or follow them on
Facebook.
Woodrow Wilson Performing Arts Department presents its
Dessert Theatre, Tuesday, November 6th at 7 p.m. Come
enjoy a wonderful evening of song and dance and delicious
desserts. Tickets on sale at the door. Start the holiday season
off with a bang and support our neighborhood kids.
Need some great entertainment for your Holiday party?
Woodrow Wilson’s singing group “Variations” is available
for hire evenings and weekends during the holiday season
to perform at your function. From caroling to a full show, the
Variations have been performing for corporate functions and
private parties around the metroplex for years. Your donation
to the program, in exchange for their performance, goes to
help defer costs associated with their Spring musical.

Crime Watch By pryce tucker
There was a lunchtime burglary in
the 7300 block of Casa Loma on
September 13. A suspect kicked in
the back door and quickly made off
with two computers and a flatscreen
TV. A witness saw the three suspects
(Hispanic males and a female) flee in an older model dark
green Chevy Suburban. The vehicle was spotted again in the
evening two days later.
We continue to see a number of thefts from parked cars,
including expensive electronics and cash. Don’t forget to
remove money and valuable personal possessions from your
parked cars. And as we recently reported (October 17) on
our Facebook page, the trend in thefts of removable thirdrow seats from full-size GM SUVs continues. A few of these
have occurred in our neighborhood over the past few months,
including a recent theft from a parked Suburban on Casa
Loma. Replacement seats cost more then $1,000. This crime
of opportunity only takes a few minutes. If you want to see
how easily it can be done, there’s a link to a video of a daylight
theft in Lake Highlands on our Facebook page. You can take
a few simple precautions to avoid
being a victim: (1) park in a garage;
(2) if you rarely use them, remove the
seats and store them indoors; (3) lock
the seats to the vehicle floor with a
motorcycle or bike cable lock.
To enhance the visibility—and thus the deterrent effect—of
our neighborhood crime watch, we’re considering buying
“crime watch” vests for people to wear when on foot. The
reflective vests would have similar information to our crime
watch car-door magnets. Given the large number of you who
stroll through the neighborhood each day, we thought it would
be a great idea to make them available to anyone who wants
one. If interested, please send me your name and e-mail
address to [email protected]. A number of people
have also asked how they can learn about recent suspected/
reported criminal activities in the neighborhood. If you’d like to
be on our Crime Watch group e-mail list, send me your e-mail
address with a request to be added. To report suspected
criminal activities, please send a brief e-mail description to
[email protected] (in addition to reporting it to
911).
Speaking of our Facebook page, we
recently posted information about a new,
easy-to-setup and easy-to-use wireless
(WIFI) security camera that has some great
features. For more information about the
award-winning product, see the Oct. 10
“Dropcam” post.
East Dallas Crossfit By Jill Perkins
If you’ve ever driven down Tucker
towards Gaston, you may have
noticed the unassuming sign,
“East Dallas CrossFit.” This
gym is owned and operated
by Woodrow Wilson alumni,
who have returned to call the
area home both personally and
professionally. Co-owner and
head coach, Ryan Savard, also
lives in Lakewood Hills.
East Dallas Crossfit (EDCF) opened at its current location in
the warehouse strip on Tucker, just behind the The Goat and
La Parillada, in the summer of 2011. This December they will
be moving into a larger space, formerly the JJ’s convenience
store, to accommodate their growing membership. The EDCF
Community is active in the Lakewood Hills area collecting
shoes for Soles4Souls, assembling a group of runners for
the 5K benefiting the Santa Fe Trail, and December 1 they
will host “Barbells and Handlebars,” an event to raise money
and awareness for prostate cancer research. Everyone is
welcome to come and join the festivities as the gym celebrates
the grand opening of their new gym at 7230 Gaston Ave. next
door to Cigarz Pizza.
CrossFit provides workouts accessible for the active and those
just starting out. At East Dallas CrossFit you will find regular
and Master’s classes geared for those 50+ or just needing a
slightly less rigorous pace. Saturday workouts are free! There
is a 9 a.m. Masters class and a 10 a.m. regular class. Bring
a bottle of water and get ready to sweat. A free one-on-one
session can also be scheduled if testing the waters in a group
class is not your thing. If you are curious about CrossFit and
want to learn more go to www.eastdallascrossfit.com.
Be sure to check out the event site for more details if you
would like to participate, watch, cheer, or to just find out how
you can contribute to prostate cancer research.
