This is in great part to vigilance of our neighbors, your neighborhood crime watch and citizen requested increased police patrols. Although the crime numbers are down, the seriousness of the crimes have gotten worse. Most of the offenses have been car breakins, but we have had several daytime burglaries and a couple of stolen cars. Please see the monthly crime report for details, and remember to call 911 to report any suspicious behavior. lakewoodhillstx La ke wood Hills of f ic e rs PRESIDENT Stewart Cockrell P: 214-797-2738 E: [email protected] VICE PRESIDENT Ram Krishnamurthy P: 404-406-5302 E: [email protected] TREASURER Martha Broecker P: 214-660-7281 E: [email protected] RECORDING SECRETARY Amy Skinner P: 405-919-0845 E: [email protected] MEMBERSHIP Donna Coker P: 214-327-3222 E: [email protected] Holiday in the “Hood” TUES. Now, I’m always on the lookout for a good sandwich, and I have been heard complaining to anyone who will listen about the distinct lack of decent sandwiches in East Dallas. The menu is simple; seven sandwiches, a dozen coffee and espresso drinks, cupcakes, pastries, cold drinks, juices, smoothies and a few brunch items on Saturdays and Sundays. Walking in, the place isn’t much to look at; bright paint and a bar with barstools line each of the walls, and there’s a simple kitchen with a big flat top where food is cooked to order. While Fernando Barerra, one of the owners, made me a cafe con leche, I asked him about the place. Turns out that he, his wife Lydia and the cook Oscar all spent 10 years working at a number of La Duni restaurants, getting the Borgas’ blessing before opening up Latin Deli. The sandwich menu features a classic Cuban, a pineapple pork and a Butifarra with Peruvian ham. I ordered the chicken salad, which was an interesting spin on the American classic and the lomo saltado, which is stuffed with chunks of steak and sautéed onions in a soy-spiked sauce. Both are served on warm ciabatta. They’re experimenting with crepes, adding both a sweet and savory version to their Saturday and Sunday menu. Also coming is a chicken sandwich, “for people who don’t like mayo.” Many of the ingredients they use at Latin Deli are imported, from Peru, Mexico and more. All in all, Latin Deli is a great place to grab a sandwich at a good value. It’s family-owned by folks with the experience to make something really great. We’re going to try a new format, and as always, we welcome your feedback! Hopefully most of you ‘like’ Lakewood Hills on Facebook, and have found it to be a convenient and direct way to communicate with lots of neighbors at once. It really is a fantastic page with lots of information being posted all the time, and the immediacy of response can’t be beat. So it seems a perfect place to go for something this column has struggled to provide: service provider referrals. If you’re looking for someone to paint your house, mow your lawn, fix your plumbing, rewire your electrical, clean your house or care for your pet snakes, just post that request on the handy Lakewood Hills Facebook page! Chances are you’ll get some answers, and fast. If by some chance you are not on Facebook, no worries. Just let me know you’d like me to post a referral request on your behalf, and I’ll be happy to do so! Forward we march… Happy Birthday! A big birthday shout out to our very own Kelly Cockrell, who celebrates her day of birth November 11th. Hope you have a great one, Kelly! A suspect kicked in the back door and quickly made off with two computers and a flatscreen TV. A witness saw the three suspects (Hispanic males and a female) flee in an older model dark green Chevy Suburban. The vehicle was spotted again in the evening two days later. We continue to see a number of thefts from parked cars, including expensive electronics and cash. Don’t forget to remove money and valuable personal possessions from your parked cars. And as we recently reported (October 17) on our Facebook page, the trend in thefts of removable thirdrow seats from full-size GM SUVs continues. A few of these have occurred in our neighborhood over the past few months, including a recent theft from a parked Suburban on Casa Loma. Replacement seats cost more then $1,000. This crime of opportunity only takes a few minutes. If you want to see how easily it can be done, there’s a link to a video of a daylight theft in Lake Highlands on our Facebook page. You can take a few simple precautions to avoid being a victim: (1) park in a garage; (2) if you rarely use them, remove the seats and store them indoors; (3) lock the seats to the vehicle floor with a motorcycle or bike cable lock. To enhance the visibility—and thus the deterrent effect—of our neighborhood crime watch, we’re considering buying “crime watch” vests for people to wear when on foot. The reflective vests would have similar information to our crime watch car-door magnets. Given the large number of you who stroll through the neighborhood each day, we thought it would be a great idea to make them available to anyone who wants one. If interested, please send me your name and e-mail address to [email protected]. A number of people have also asked how they can learn about recent suspected/ reported criminal activities in the neighborhood. If you’d like to be on our Crime Watch group e-mail list, send me your e-mail address with a request to be added. To report suspected criminal activities, please send a brief e-mail description to [email protected] (in addition to reporting it to 911). Speaking of our Facebook page, we recently posted information about a new, easy-to-setup and easy-to-use wireless (WIFI) security camera that has some great features. For more information about the award-winning product, see the Oct. 10 “Dropcam” post. East Dallas Crossfit By Jill Perkins If you’ve ever driven down Tucker towards Gaston, you may have noticed the unassuming sign, “East Dallas CrossFit.” This gym is owned and operated by Woodrow Wilson alumni, who have returned to call the area home both personally and professionally. Co-owner and head coach, Ryan Savard, also lives in Lakewood Hills. East Dallas Crossfit (EDCF) opened at its current location in the warehouse strip on Tucker, just behind the The Goat and La Parillada, in the summer of 2011. This December they will be moving into a larger space, formerly the JJ’s convenience store, to accommodate their growing membership. The EDCF Community is active in the Lakewood Hills area collecting shoes for Soles4Souls, assembling a group of runners for the 5K benefiting the Santa Fe Trail, and December 1 they will host “Barbells and Handlebars,” an event to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer research. Everyone is welcome to come and join the festivities as the gym celebrates the grand opening of their new gym at 7230 Gaston Ave. next door to Cigarz Pizza. CrossFit provides workouts accessible for the active and those just starting out. At East Dallas CrossFit you will find regular and Master’s classes geared for those 50+ or just needing a slightly less rigorous pace. Saturday workouts are free! There is a 9 a.m. Masters class and a 10 a.m. regular class. Bring a bottle of water and get ready to sweat. A free one-on-one session can also be scheduled if testing the waters in a group class is not your thing. If you are curious about CrossFit and want to learn more go to www.eastdallascrossfit.com.
