From the Deputy
Principal's Desk
“Our male staff grow moustaches
for the ‘Movember’ Men’s Health
Charity.”
With test week over, we are continuing to teach the curriculum and thank the parents who have supported us
in sending their children to school. Please remember to send an absentee note to the class teacher on your
child’s return to school if they are sick. Chicken Pox and Mumps seems to be doing their rounds, and a doctor’s
certificate is required for your child to return to school.
By the time you read this, we would have congratulated children on their cultural achievements at the Arts
Awards, and will be looking forward to meeting our Grade 3 parents tomorrow night. Please come and meet
your child’s 2017 Grade 4 class teacher. A reminder that you will need to pay R500 for your child’s 2017
Workbooks. You may pay by cash or card on the night. All other parents who will have children in Grades 5 to
7 in 2017 should already have paid the 2017 workbook levy in order for them to receive their workbooks on the
first day of school next year.
The rain, as is usual at this time of the year, has interrupted sport practices and matches. Please check the d6
for up to date changes.
Congratulations to our swimmers who participated in the swimathon last week in order to raise funds for their
swimming poncho towels.
Our male teachers continue to go unshaved to support the ‘Movember’ fundraiser in aid of Men’s Health. We
supported Children’s Cancer Organisation Rainbows and Smiles and TLC with our civvies day we had at the
end of the third term, and now would like to support this deserving cause. If you would like to send a donation
to support them, please place the money in an envelope and send to school.
S. WILLIAMS (Mrs)
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
SWIMATHON
Chelsea Swimathon
Swimmers were sponsored for the number of lengths they swam
to raise money to buy Chelsea ponchos.
Sports News
Dear Parents
With three and a half weeks left until the end of the term, we will
be winding down as far as sport is concerned. Unfortunately with
the weather patterns lately it is likely that some cricket matches will
be cancelled due to rain. As was the case against Umhlali last
week.
Hopefully this week, from a cricket perspective, will be a lot better.
Please be aware of the date for our annual athletics, it will be
wonderful to have as much parental support at this event as
possible.

Poems Written About Guy Fawkes
The Grade 7s recently learnt about Guy Fawkes/Bonfire night and
wrote poems about it.
The Night by Tejal Bhoola
The night to remember
The night to celebrate
The night that makes us shiver and shake.
As we sit in the cold
Bonfire burning bright
If anything reminds us of this day
It’s the bright fire light.
The night that changed everything
The night that Guy Fawkes lit the match.
The night that parliament was saved
The night that Guy had a burnt patch.
The fifth of November
You must remember
The gunpowder treason
For no reason.
Bonfire Night by Prathna Banwari
Effigies are set alight
Oh, what a satisfying sight
For some
Or none.
Fireworks light up the sky
In honour or revenge of Guy.
Government overthrow?
Or the plot to blow.
Expired gunpowder in the basement
Of the King’s house of parliament.
Don’t forget the fifth of November
It’ll always be a day to remember.
Guy Fawkes’s spirit still lurks
And all his notorious smirks.
The Fifth of November by Sayuri Singh
On the fifth of November
The scheme is alive.
The house of parliament Is the criminal’s eye
A normal day
Not for long
To go up in flames
By the gunpowder plot.
In the cellar
Lay 36 barrels of unopened gunpowder
Authorities storm in
Guy Fawkes stops
Tortured and executed
The animal is gone.
Bonfire night
Fireworks are it
To celebrate the night
That Guy Fawkes hit.
Bonfire Night by Jade Baxter
Remember, remember the
Fifth of November.
No one knew
What he was going do
Until the letter arose
Who sent it, no one knows.
With a light in his hand
Hidden in the cellar
To take a stand
His choice was arson
His plan wasn’t stellar!
Guy Fawkes, a great soul
Acted before he thought.
Now sitting among the coal
Burnt because he got caught.

The Wonderful Watermelon
The Watermelon is one of the most intriguing fruits that God
created. Watermelon, or Citrullus Lanatus, is not only indigenous
to Southern Africa, but it is also believed to have originated from
Southern Africa. The cultivation of watermelon dates back to 2000
BC, but some scientists believed that watermelons were farmed
long before then as watermelon seeds were found in the tomb of
Pharaoh Tutankhamen.
Wonderful facts about Watermelons:


There are more than 1 200 varieties, in many different colours
(not just pink inside, but yellow, white and orange too).
They can range in weight from less than a pound to two hundred
pounds.
They comprise of 6% sugar and 92% water.
They are a big source of vitamin C, Beta carotene, and Citrulline
(a chemical that stimulates nitric oxide which expands our body’s
blood vessels – aiding circulation – having similar effects to the
drug Viagra. The red flesh is also a source of lycopene (the same
substance that makes tomatoes red and is believed to lower the
risk of cancer).
Watermelon juice can be made into wine successfully.
It is a natural mild diuretic (helps the body get rid of excess
water).
In Japan space is so valuable that watermelons are grown in
square glass containers so that they grow into a square shape,
which is easier to store or transport.
In South Africa they are hollowed out to make decorative helmets
as protection from flying balls and the sun at cricket matches.
The fruit grows with a beautiful yellow flower, big luscious green
leaves and long vines.
Having discovered more about this incredible fruit with its yellow
flower, green striped exterior, pale yellow pith and bright pink juicy
insides – consider this:
If someone gave you a small, black, average-looking seed and they
told you to put it in the ground because it would grow into
something truly remarkable – would you ever imagine that it would
result in something like the watermelon?
Consider some people – often what we see at first can appear
rather dull, average and ‘unexciting’. But we should never
underestimate the potential in other human beings to become
colourful, useful, exciting and of great value to others.
If God can take a little black seed and create a magnificent
watermelon out of it, how much more can He take one of His
precious human beings with all of their talents and character and
create something truly wonderful and useful with their lives.
God does miracles!
