Supporting Paragraph 1 - Canvas by Instructure

The basis for this assignment is fairly simple. I want you to go back and look at your essay from the writing prompt you
submitted and just received back from me. Evaluate this essay exactly as you did for the Claim/ Evidence/ Commentary
Model assignment. The particular requirements are below.
Introduction Paragraph:
First, you will be asked to determine a guiding question for your overall claim (thesis statement). This guiding
question is essentially a summary of all the parts of your writing task. Then, you will list your overall claim (your
thesis statement).Your task is to go back and look at your introductory paragraph and find your overall claim. If you
find that you did not create an introduction paragraph for your essay, and therefore have no thesis statement or
overall claim, you will need to determine one for your paper and list it here. When you write your revision, you will
need to add an introduction paragraph to your paper.
Supporting Paragraph 1:
This section of your assignment will just list the individual sentences like you did for the last assignment. You should
have a claim, evidence, and commentary listed. You MUST have evidence and commentary for each claim you make.
If you find that you are missing this information, then go back and find the evidence in your text and write
commentary to connect the evidence to your claim. Once you have added the information to this assignment, make
sure you go back and add it to your essay revision.
Supporting Paragraphs 2 and 3:
Repeat what you have done for paragraph 1.
If you find that you have more than three supporting paragraphs, go ahead and include information for the
additional paragraphs.
If you find that you do not have enough paragraphs, you need to add these paragraphs to your essay and then
include information for them here.
You do not need to complete any work at this time for your concluding paragraph.
Below is an example format for this assignment based on the Mary Had a Little Lamb paragraph you read earlier.
Explain how the text complexity of the poem Mary Had a Little Lamb affects the poem’s status as a nursery rhyme.
Provide adequate evidence from the text to support your claim.
In order to gain proper insight to understanding the complexity of the poem Mary Had a Little Lamb, one must
first examine the rhyming pattern. The short nursery rhyme, Mary Had a Little Lamb, is written in exact rhyme. The
definition of exact rhyme is rhyming that occurs at the end of two lines of poetry in which their last words have the same
ending sounds. For example, the line, “Its fleece was white as snow,” has the exact same rhyme at the end of the line as
the line, “The lamb was sure to go.” The two words snow and go, seen at the end of both lines emote the exact same
ending sound and therefore rhyme.
Note: You are only seeing the first supporting paragraph of an entire essay, so the thesis and
guiding question make sense when looking at the essay in its entirety.
Introduction Paragraph:
Guiding Question: How does the complexity of the text to the poem affect its status as a nursery rhyme?
Overall Claim: Examining the structure of this poem is a classic case of form meets function; the simple
structure of the popular nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb along with the rhyming, rhyme scheme, and
other literary elements all contribute towards this poem being classified as a nursery rhyme rather than a
work of narrative poetry.
