Letter from the President
and Executive
Director
Dear Friends of CAC,
2009 marked a turning point in the development of the Community Action
Center. The poor economy pushed more households than ever before to turn
to CAC for assistance. Demand for critical assistance services from CAC was the
highest in our 23 year history. For many, the crisis deepened in gravity and
length as jobs were slow to materialize. Our donor community was not
immune to the economic downturn, and many supporters were forced to
reduce their commitments.
CAC responded proactively when faced with the increased demand and the
financial challenges of funding operations in uncertain times. We worked Cheryl Sykes, President of CAC Board of
aggressively to secure grants to add development and communications staff Directors, left, and Tamara Carrera CAC
positions. By having more focused approach in these two critical areas, we Executive Director.
broadened our base of support to include funding from new foundations and
from many new individual donors. These donations, coupled with our existing generous supporters, enabled
CAC to reach the following milestones in 2009:
• CAC deepened and expanded our core of extraordinary supporters who allow us to help many local families
facing crisis situations brought about by the loss of a job or personal tragedies. CAC provides food, clothing,
emergency financial assistance, educational opportunities for adults, and enrichment programs for youth.
• Our services have evolved and expanded to better meet the needs of those seeking assistance. We
increased food and clothing allowances to further help clients; added case tracking for clients receiving
financial assistance to guide them through the process of addressing their crisis and track our impact and
their progress and added to the educational choices offered to clients.
• Vintage Affair 2009, our annual fundraising event, with The Neighbor Newspapers Inc. as lead sponsor,
enjoyed increased exposure. Attendance doubled from 2008, and funds raised grew by 59 percent.
• CAC now partners with 26 congregations in our community. They provide financial and in-kind support, as
well as most of our volunteer workforce of more than 200.
• Further deepening its roots in the communities of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody, CAC continues to receive
support from a growing number of local businesses, residents, civic organizations, schools, private foundations and branches of local governments.
As we began to digest the impact of this expansion, we believed it was prudent for Community Action Center
to engage in a full-blown strategic planning exercise. Over the next few months we will review and refine its
mission and objectives; define what the agency will accomplish over the next five years; and the strategies it
will employ.
We are grateful for your involvement in and support of CAC. It has enabled us to help local residents make it
through crisis situations they faced in 2009. Your continued support of CAC and its mission will take us through
2010 and the years to come so that together we will make a difference each day in the lives of those members
of our community most in need of assistance.

Our goals are to prevent homelessness and hunger with short term emergency assistance to families and individuals at risk. The center serves an
area with a population of approximately 90,000 residents that is known as
a wealthy community. However, local elementary school statistics show
that more than 58 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Therefore, many households in our community have incomes at or close to
the poverty level. While the center serves mostly the working poor, income
loss, not income level is the qualifying criteria for assistance.

Helping families and individuals remain in their homes during times of
crisis helps build stronger, more independent families and a better
community. Quality of life programs gives inspiration to adults and
children alike. Adult education programs teach computer and life skills
that can build job marketability and confidence. Youth programs offer
disadvantaged children opportunities such as meaningful summer camp
experiences that they otherwise would not be able to afford. Holiday food
and gift giving programs lift spirits and bring joy during difficult times.
