DEBATING
St Pius X College hosted the 50th annual finals of the
Catholic Schools Debating Association (CSDA) last Friday
night. John Brogden was the guest presenter and large
crowds of supporters from schools across the Sydney
metropolitan area were in attendance. Appreciation is
due to our convenor, Ms Michele Waterson, our coaches
and students acting as chairmen and time keepers who
did a splendid and slick job in hosting the evening.
Our 11As (Josiah Lising, Ryan Attard and Keenan Smith)
went down in a split 1-2 decision to Catherine McAuley College
Westmead. I was privileged to see them perform and was
extremely proud of their generosity in defeat in so narrow a loss.
The boys’ demeanour enhanced the girls’ enjoyment of their
victory.
Later in the evening for the 4th time the College’s name went
onto the CSDA Senior Aggregate Shield for most wins in a
season by teams in Years 11 and 12. Congratulations to:
12A team:
12B team:
11A team:
11B team:
Matthew Harris, Hans Lee, Tyler Jarvis (4 wins)
Lyndon Maher, Harry Vinter, Adam Melzer (unbeaten until the quarter finals)
Josiah Lising, Ryan Attard, Keenan Smith (5 wins)
Billy Moran, Pat McKenzie, Zac Triantafilis (6 wins)
Don’t argue with a boy from St Pius X!

SUPPORT FOR WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016
Pope Francis has called the youth of the world to assemble in Krakow, Poland, in July 2016. Our
Youth Ministry Coordinator, Mr Adrian Brannan, is organising the College’s effort and thus far over
30 boys have worked through processes towards final approval as pilgrims.
It is an expensive undertaking (current estimates suggest $6,000 plus) and the College is seeking
your help in fundraising in order to subsidise our group.

FAITH IN ACTION
This week represents the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time in the year of the Church and the Gospel centred on the loaves
and the fishes where Jesus feeds thousands of people. This is a well-known story and in many ways it underpins many social
justice initiatives at school.
Every week charities feed thousands of people all over this city. When our boys travel to the Matt Talbot Hostel on
Wednesday evenings they assist in serving dinner to men who are homeless and who are very much on the fringes of
society. They set their tables, clear their plates and clean the dining room. The provision of a meal is sustenance, but is also
an acceptance by society. These men are welcomed and cared for and treated with dignity and respect. The staff and
students who give of their time to serve do so with humility as they expect no reward or praise and in completing their
duties they act as true disciples.
The Edmund Rice Society offers so much to our young men because it provides them with a way to make a difference in
our city and it bridges the gap between the Gospels that were written in the 1st Century and our mission as true Christians
in the 21st Century. I urge all of our young men to consider putting some time into social justice because that is one way
to turn faith into action.

30 JULY - INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FRIENDSHIP
“On this International Day of Friendship, let us cultivate warm ties that strengthen
our common humanity and promote the well-being of the human family.”

Again St Pius boys have been very active throughout our community this week. Matthew Talbot Men’s Hostel, Willowood
Nursing Home and the Bloodbank in Chatswood are weekly occurrences.
EDMUND RICE SOCIETY GOES NATIONAL
On Thursday afternoon Bailey Sutton Year 7, Oliver Tysoe Year 8, and Jack Morgan Year 9 began
building the first of the 30 skateboard decks that the ERS are building and planning to deliver to
“The Haven Education Centre” Terrigal.
This is an EREA Annex School for kids who have been withdrawn from mainstream schools for
various reasons. The skateboard decks will become an art project and installing the trucks and
wheels will become a technology project for these students at The Haven.

SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANTS PROGRAM
Further to Mr Olson’s announcement at the Academic Awards ceremony last Friday I am delighted
to advise that the Colleges new Scholarships and Grants Program has today gone live on the
College website.
The College has for some years made a number of scholarships available to existing students,
however, with an expanded offering will now offer Scholarships not only on the basis of a student’s
Academic performance, but also on the grounds of Equity or Enrichment to the life of the College.
In this way we will now provide access to those families who would not ordinarily seek enrolment
and in so doing allow each student who receives a Scholarship the opportunity of a Catholic
education in the Edmund Rice Tradition. This is consistent with the Charter for schools that are part
of Edmund Rice Education Australia and the Inclusive Community Touchstone which states:
"A Catholic school in the Edmund Rice Tradition ... strives to provide access to those who otherwise would not seek
enrolment."
Consistent with this approach the College also seeks to assist students to participate in College co-curricular tours (when
selected) or representation of the College at State, National or International levels where their participation may otherwise
be not possible due to their financial circumstances.
Enquires about or applications for these Scholarships or Grants may be directed to myself and the awarding of them will
be determined periodically by the Scholarship or Awards Committees, chaired by Mrs Therese Maclaine and including Mr
Couani and myself. Please look into the details of the program under the “Enrolment Information” tab on the College
website.

WYD 2016 KRAKOW POLAND
Many of our St Pius X College Pilgrims attended the Krakow: 365 Days to Go
Mass at Our Lady of Dolours Chatswood on Sunday night and received a
special Pilgrims Blessing after being presented to the community. They joined
our local parish precinct’s amazing response to total 53 registered local
pilgrims, with our lads joining other students from Mercy College, Chatswood
High School and St Ignatius College Riverview. After the Pilgrims received their
Blessing from parish priest; Fr. Paul Finucane, he revealed that he too will be a
pilgrim with us on our journey to World Youth Day.
After the Mass our lads joined in on a High School social night which was amazingly successful, with large cohorts of
students from Brigidine, Mercy College, Chatswood High, Riverview and Wooolwich represented. It was great night of
games, pizza and fellowship and I think our boys made some new, and strengthened some old connections.
ROCK ‘N ROLL ‘N RUGBY FUNDRAISER
With only a few days until the draw of the Bledisloe tickets I again call for the college community to support our pilgrims in
their preparation and in the process give yourselves a chance to win an amazing experience two tickets to the Bledisloe
in Platinum comfort!
With the Wallabies hopefully going to string a few wins together they have set up a showdown against the All Blacks for
the decider of the Rugby Championship and the Bledisloe on Saturday 8 th August. Hopefully our own Michael Hooper will
be cleared to play and continue his strong run of form into selection for the World Cup. Rugby Synopsis!
There are two other prizes - 2 Platinum Seats to Monster Jam on 17/10 and 2 Platinum Seats to AC/DC Live in November and your $35 ticket gives you equal chance of winning any of the three prizes.
Please do consider supporting our SPX students in this very
worthwhile cause and give yourself and a friend the opportunity
of an amazing Rugby experience in style and luxury.

CYBERBULLYING ISSUES: In a Federal Government response to contemporary Cyberbullying issues, The Enhancing Online
Safety for Children Act 2015 has seen the Office of the Children’s Guardian absorb the ACMA Cybersmart program and
resources which we have used to educate students about cybersafety. The Act allows children suffering from serious
cyberbullying to contact the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner to have content removed if social media
companies do not remove it after it has been reported to them. The Office can share information and work with schools
to resolve complaints reported to them.
For your information, a range of resources can now be sourced from the office’s website www.esafety.gov.au which
outline the safeguards and processes to combat cyberbullying. As citizens of the “digital age” it is important that we
understand the potential dangers involved in social media activity, and how they can be addressed within the law.
The College acts to address instances of misuse of electronic media and will be supported by the Office of the Children’s
Guardian and Social Media services where these breaches impact beyond the scope of the College. This is a timely
reminder of all to the need to protect oneself, consider all consequences, and act responsibly whenever using electronic
media.

Dear Parents and Players, Congratulations to our 13D side on their first victory of the season!!!! After so much hard work and
training by the players and their coach, Ms Foord, it was great to see that the boys prevailed in a dominant 2-0 victory to
earn themselves the title of team of the week. Player of the week goes to Dan Makerry of the 1 st XI whose continual drive
and leadership guided the team to a 3-2 victory having been down 0-2 early on. Well done to all.
This weekend we have a combination of home and away fixtures against St Andrews. For some year 12 students this will be
the last time that they play at Oxford Falls so come down and support. In addition to this, many of the past 1st XI captains
from the last two decades will be in attendance to support the 1 st XI at their 9am kickoff. Good luck to all teams.

Congratulations to the 13As, 13Bs, 14Bs 15Bs 16As and 2nd XV who all won tough away games to St Stanislaus at Bathurst

“Six – Five, with one to go”
6 wins 5 losses at St Stanislaus on Saturday and despite the long journey all our teams played with a great “will to win spirit”.
Team Pius widely on show. Wins for our 13 As and Bs, 14Bs, 15Bs, 16 As and 2nds.
Our 13’s in all teams are playing with great style and fluency and if the A’s win this Saturday’s final game against St Augustine
will be crowned premiers. 16As also have the opportunity to become joint premiers if they also win. Both teams play with a
running support based emphasis, which makes them a delight to watch, whilst never forgetting the importance of solid, ball
into contact retention technique! Win the re-cycle and you give yourself more chances to score. Several comments were
made to me about our positive playing spirit and not only from our own supporters. Desire and spirit are the foundation for
success and even in the games we lost we remained competitive.
This Saturday is arguably our toughest challenge against St Augustine’s College. If we prepare and arrive with the same
attitude as we did at St Stanislaus College, then we will achieve the success we deserve. Let’s make sure we give both the
13As and 16As maximum support in their quest for the ultimate prize.
Coaches recognition from Saturday - well done to all these players: Josh Smith, Darcy Gyzen, Liam Hunt, Tom Gazey, Brynn
Mendel, Sam Burrell, Sam Smith, Tom Finlay, Liam O’Neil, Connor Terri- Lloyd.
Finally Saturday marks the end of school rugby playing days for many players and parents! Thanks to both groups for their
tremendous commitment and contribution as players and supporters. It’s important to look back and savour the good times
and I hope that you all will maintain an interest and involvement in rugby.
If any parents feel I may be able to offer advice or help with regards to their son’s rugby playing future, please don’t hesitate
to get in touch. I’ve seen a lot of young players make this transition over the years and playing overseas having a gap year
is now more of an option.

ISA TENNIS
Round 8 was tough as we were up against some formidable St Patrick’s College teams. All teams fought hard in every
one of their games with some excellent rallies and hard-fought points. Divisions 10 played very well, seeing a win after
some close sets. Division 10 continue their impressive winning streak and remain undefeated. Congratulations to Thom
Hardman, Andrew Horton, Alessandro Muranty and David Ko for winning all of their sets in this last Round.
Round 9 sees us playing against St Andrews Cathedral School, Oxley College and Barker College. See the details
below. Please note that the venue is sometimes not at the school itself but at a tennis venue nearby, so please be sure to
check the address for all away games.
Please also remember that when playing at our home venue, all players are required to bring along a small plate of food
for morning tea to share with our visiting teams.
Absences: Any student who is unable to play MUST notify the Tennis Convenor or their coaches ASAP so that SPX can field
teams in all divisions on a Saturday. It is too hard to try and find players to play-up at the Friday morning Tennis meeting.
Please notify Ms O’Brien ([email protected]) or Ms Colefax, Black or Kugananthan as soon as you aware of a
proposed absence.
Wet Weather: The Tennis Convenor will notify all players as soon as there is information about any match cancellations.
Please make sure that you check your phones for messages so you don’t make an unnecessary trip to a cancelled game.
Wet Weather details will also be able to be accessed via the SPX Senior Sport Twitter Account
(https://twitter.com/SPXSeniorSport) or the school website
(http://www.spx.nsw.edu.au/beyond-classroom/dsp-default.cfm?loadref=80 ).

CRICKET
New Season 2015-2016 Registrations are about to Close! The 2015-2016 Cricket season is fast approaching and
registrations to play for the College this year have to close this coming weekend so don't delay get registered NOW!
Preparations for the new season include the Cricket Club's development day on Sunday August 23 which is little more than
three weeks away. Mark that in your diaries but before you do so jump onto SPX Cricket’s online booking system
at: http://www.trybooking.com/146929 and get your sons registered to play.
It only takes a few minutes to complete: it's fast and informative and takes all the worries out of the old ways of registration.
Sign-up has to close this coming Sunday - August 2 - so that we can let our respective cricket associations know how many
teams and players we will be entering in their competitions.
SPX Cricket plays in the North Shore and Manly Cricket Association competitions while the Open teams - the 1st and 2nd
X1s - play in the ISA competition. If you need any more information about district cricket registration or are new to cricket
at the college don't hesitate to contact Club Secretary Danny John at [email protected]

Mr G Virgona – Junior School Sportsmaster
NSTA Tennis
We had a beautiful sunny morning to start the term off on Saturday. There were many great shots played and it was great
to see the boys communicating well to one another on shots to play especially in the doubles games. Well done to Pius 1
and Pius 3 on their respective wins. It was a great morning of tennis.
Just a reminder the competition will run over the next 5 weeks with finals and play offs on the 29th August. As none of our
teams have reserves, if your son cannot make his Saturday game, it would be much appreciated if you let me know as
soon as possible via email [email protected]

Our Year 11a team of Ryan Attard, Josiah Lising and Keenan Smith lost their debate in a split (2 to 1) adjudication. A
narrow loss and the debate was very close and really could have gone to either team, but on this night, with this panel
of adjudicators the very clever girls from Catherine McAuley College, Westmead were the successful team.
Our debaters were so successful in their loss—they actually gave the opposition winning team the joy of a sincere and
heart felt congratulations and this is difficult to do a few seconds after an extremely disappointing result. I don’t know if
it is a St Pius thing but this elegance in the face of a painful loss shows that our students are always gracious and this is
sooo rare. They are certainly exceptional young men.
Mr Olson witnessed the debate on Friday night and had such praise for our students at assembly on Monday morning:
he said they were winners…and they are!
Mr Couani's reply on Friday night after I texted him of the loss was: "I'm so proud of the team. Congratulations. They are
our champions. My very warmest congrats on a great season. Mr C."
Whist the St Pius crew gathered in the foyer of the gym (the gym was full--we hosted around 400 people on Friday night)
the head of the CSDA told me to get our boys into the gym as they were about to be presented with an award. The
final and most prestigious award for the CSDA 2015 season is the Senior Aggregate Cup which acknowledges the
excellent results that our Year 11 and Year 12 debaters have achieved in 2015. St Pius X Senior debaters have had the
most wins of any senior teams in the competition this year and were presented with a huge trophy.
12a
Matthew Harris, Hans Lee, Tyler Jarvis (4 wins from 6 rounds and Tyler had never debated before!!)
12b
Lyndon Maher, Harry Vinter, Adam Melzer (unbeaten until the Quarterfinals)
11a
Ryan Attard, Josiah Lising and Keenan Smith (5 wins from 6 rounds and then won through to Finals)
11b
Billy Moran, Patrick Mckenzie, Zac Triantafilis (5 wins from 6 rounds; won through to Elimination Round)
These boys are AMAZING!! All praise to them!!!! Their determination, commitment to team work and exceptional
individual skills.
Click here to return to Woodchatta Extras Index page
Mr Couani's reply after I texted him re the Senior Aggregate Cup win was: "This is a massive achievement. They have
done so well and certainly the best of any teams in my time as Principal. Congrats once again. Mr C".
I have to beware of gushing about how wonderful our debaters are, Year 7 through to Year 12 ... but hey … am I right
or am I right!! They are champions!
MASSIVE THANKYOU TO ALL DEBATERS – YEAR 7 TO YEAR 12 AND THEIR COACHES FOR MAKING THE HOSTING OF THE FINALS
HAPPEN!!! Without the dedication of these terrific workers—they slogged it out from 5pm to 10.30pm: setting up chairs,
classrooms, moving walls, putting up signage around the school, greeting guests and directing cars, setting up the food
and cleaning the canteen area and then the massive clean-up and packing away that just seemed to go on and on.
Thank you to all debaters and their dedicated parents who are so supportive or us. Our Year 12 Debaters ran the setting
up of the classrooms and the gym. Without the organisation and leadership of this spectacular Year 12 group, under the
exceptional leadership of our Debate Captain, Matthew Harris. Without Matthew’s leadership and his dedicated Year 12
team mates we would not have been able to get through the 2015 season, let alone pull of such a successful CSDA Finals
event. Thank you to all debaters and their dedicated parents who have been so supportive of our efforts.
We plan to have a pizza “partai” in the Sarto Centre later in the term when we can thank and congratulate all of our
debaters for their amazing efforts this year.
SCHOOLS DEBATING NETWORK
Last Friday, 24th July, Ms Easton travelled to Abbotsleigh, Wahroonga and after a 1.40 hr bus trip up the Pacific Highway
they arrived for their debates. Unfortunately we gained no wins that night but we are hopeful for our SDN debate event
this Friday night, 31st July, when St Pius X is hosting Monte Sant Angelo, North Sydney.
Students have allocated teams for this Friday night in our regular Tuesday C2 morning tea meeting. They are allowed to
travel to Westfield on the bell at 3.15pm and are expected to be back at the College for training from 4-5pm. At 5pm
we will be setting up debate rooms and our guests should arrive after 5.30pm for our 6pm commencement.
Coin toss for Years 7 - 9 is 6pm SHARP with debates commencing at 7pm. Coin toss for Years 10 - 12 is 7pm SHARP and
debates commence at 8pm. Years 7 - 9 debate commencement is 7pm with a 7.30 - 8pm conclusion/pick-up and
Years 10 - 12 debate commencement time is 8pm with an 8.45 -9.00pm conclusion/pick-up. Thank you to parents for
their support.

FOOTBALL CLUB NEWS
Some great results last week against Oakhill - keep up the effort as we approach the final 2 rounds.
Special mention to the 13D’s who recorded their first win last weekend - great work boys.
The weekly Results Round-up digital publication is back - earlier editions are still on the website for those
who missed them. Thanks to those parents who contributed so far; we’ve had a great response please keep it up.
This week’s ‘in focus’ teams are 14A & 15B & 16B - so if you have a boy in one of these teams we really
want you to take some action shots this weekend.
We always welcome photos from any other match as well!
Send your photos to
[email protected] - save this to your phone and upload those photos as soon as you take
then. We need the photos in by Sunday afternoon.
 SPECIAL REQUEST
We need full team photos now in preparation for the ‘Year in Review’ magazine. We want a photo from
all Senior and Junior teams.
Please organise a quick photo before or after the game and send it to [email protected]
The full senior calendar of matches is on our webpages as well - there are no times as they are only
confirmed week to week.
We wish all our teams good luck this weekend -- GO PIUS!!

GAMES THIS SATURDAY, 1st August: ISA Round #6 v St Augustine’s - HOME
As SPX has drawn the BYE for round #7, this will be the last match for the season (for the majority of
teams). Please encourage your son to support the 13A’s & 16A’s, who will both be battling it out
with Augie’s for the ISA Premiership.
Best of luck to all teams!
LAST WEEKEND - SPX v St STANISLAUS, BATHURST
The weather smiled upon us, and though cool it was a cracking sunny day for rugby and the
supporters in Bathurst. Congratulations to the winning teams, and indeed all the players who fought
hard against tough opposition and displayed admirable sportsmanship across the matches
following the very early morning start. On the annual trip across the mountains, we had great
feedback from the boys and parents who enjoyed a bonding & social evening on the Friday night
in Blackheath, and look forward to next year in Orange.
REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY – Sydney Junior Rugby Union (Club/District Rugby)
Best of luck to Dominic Easy (Yr10) competing in the U15 Sydney Rep team versus NSW Country on
Sunday. Kick-off is 11:10 at TG Milner, with the state selectors casting their eye over the players for
NSW selection.
