Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (Small Groups, 25 minutes)
* 1. Glow! (application activity)
What You Need: “Glow!” Activity Pages, Bible, scotch tape
What You Do:
• Guide the kids to gather around you. Ask kids to name the BEST place to discover what God
says. (The Bible)
• One at a time, invite volunteers to open the Bible to a marked verse. Read the verse aloud or
invite a child to read. Set the puzzle piece aside.
• When the kids find all the pieces, invite kids who haven’t yet had a turn to work together to
assemble the puzzle on the table.
What You Say:
“When King Herod wanted to know where Jesus was born, where did the chief priests and teachers find
the answer? Yes! The answer was in God’s Word. In King Herod’s time, God’s Word was in a scroll.
(Ask if anyone knows what a scroll is. If not, explain that it’s how paper was put together in biblical
times. Roll up a sheet of paper from both sides, like a scroll would be.) Where do we find God’s Word
today? Yes! God’s Word is the Bible. The Bible tells us everything we need to know about Jesus. It tells
us that Jesus is God’s Son, that He never did anything wrong, that He loves you, that He died to save
you from Your sins, and that if you believe in Him you’ll live with God forever!
“So remember: [Bottom Line] discovering what God says helps you know Jesus. And knowing
Jesus is the best thing in the world!”
2. Bible Review
What You Need: Bible
What You Do:
Ask the kids…
• Is our story today in the Old Testament or the New Testament? What book is it in? (New
Testment, John) (Show them how to find the book of John in the Bible.)
• Who did John say he was in John 1:23? (I’m the messenger who is calling out in the desert)
What is a messenger? What does a messenger do? (tells people about something, in this case,
the coming of Jesus)
• Who did John say Jesus was in John 1:29-30? (the Lamb of God, the one John was talking
about)
• What came down from heaven when Jesus was baptized? (the Holy Spirit in the form of a dov)
• Do people get baptized today too? What do we use to baptize people today? Why do people
decide to get baptized? (Yes / water / to let others know the person believes in Jesus)

When Jesus decided to get baptized, He was showing us, by example, what He’d like us to do. Once
we accept Jesus into our hearts, the Bible says that we should get baptized to let all of our friends know
that we believe in Jesus too!
Does anyone have any questions about how to ask Jesus into your heart? (Review gospel presentation
pages if any of the kids show interest and tell the kids about starting zone. If kids show interest in
accepting Christ, please share this information with their parents when they pick them up.)
3. Lamp, Light (memory verse activity)
What You Need: Bible, “Lamp, Light” cards Activity Pages, tape, flashlight
What You Do:
• Open the Bible and read Psalm 119:105 aloud.
• Say the verse phrase by phrase as you hand a card to each child. Encourage the kids to repeat
the phrases after you.
• Guide kids to gather in the middle of your area.
• Cue kids to hold up each card when you shine your flashlight on it and say that part of the verse
together.
• Continue with the remaining cards, varying the pace as you progress through the verse.
• Repeat as time allows.
What You Say:
“God gives each of us an AMAZING ability to learn and to know new things. And guess what? You just
took a big step toward learning this month’s verse! You might even be able to say it with me. (Say the
verse, encouraging kids to say it with you.) Great job!
“How do lamps and lights help us? (They help us see things; they help us find our way in the dark; they
help us not be scared) How is God’s Word like a light or lamp? (It makes us happy like light makes us
happy; it shows us the way to go; it tells us about God’s love; because people around the world love
Jesus)
“God’s Word is amazing and wonderful and true! So never stop learning God’s Word! Because

What You Need: Bible
What You Do:
• Invite kids to gather closely around you.
• Use the conversation below as a guide to lead them into prayer.

“What is the most important thing to know? Yes! [Bottom Line] What God says is the most
important thing to know. Why do you think that what God says the most important thing to know?

you can be with Him forever!”)
Lead the kids in prayer, thanking God for giving us the Bible so that we can discover what He says.

Each morning brings an opportunity to learn
something new about this incredible world God
created. This month, spark your child’s curiosity
by placing a new wonder note somewhere she
looks each morning. Grab a pen and paper (or
get as artsy as you want!) and finish this sentence: “I wonder . . .” with something cool you
think your child would enjoy discovering about
God’s creation. Where is the deepest part of the
ocean? The highest mountain peak? The most
recently discovered species? Talk about what
they discovered at dinner that night!

Read Luke 2:41-52 as a family. Take a minute
and brainstorm all the different things you
could learn or do if you had the time. The list is
endless! You could spend every minute of your
life learning and never stop! So . . . where do you
start? Jesus knew, and we can too, that the most
important thing to learn is what God says. In
the Bible, God tells us how to love Him and love
others and how to make wise choices. When
you focus on God’s words first, it changes every
part of your life, and starts to spill into the lives of
people around you.

It can be hard getting back into the swing of
homework and school projects after a long
break. And with all of that, plus the endless
“Why??” questions, learning something new is
all you feel like your child is doing these days!
But here’s the good news: you don’t have to
give your child all the answers! In fact, it’s better
if you take a break and have them discover the
answers for themselves. Next time your child
asks how a TV works or what the moon is really
made of, encourage them to research the answer online or in a book at your local library and
report back to you about what they discovered.
