Grade 2 Tour Ecabazini
This past Sunday was a hugely
successful day for the school,
due to our annual Bike Ride
fundraiser. Despite the miserable
weather on the day, we had a
fantastic turn out at the event
(one of our biggest in the past
few years) with well over 300
riders competing. There were so
many positive comments passed
on to us about the event; how
well organised it was, what a fun
day it was and despite the slippery conditions, what an awesome course it was. Congratulations to all, particularly the
Parent’s Committee Members
and those parents who offered
their assistance on the day, who
put in a great deal of effort to
make it such a wonderful event.
Our thanks and congratulations
must of course go to both Karen
and Geoff Wolhuter for their
tireless efforts in organising and
promoting the event, sourcing
prizes, marking the track and for
opening up their farm (along
with the other farm owners) to
host the event. My only regret
from the day is that we didn’t
have more NHP families supporting or assisting on the day,
as mentioned before, the event
does bring in much needed and
substantial funding for the
school, which ultimately we all
benefit from. In discussions with
the Parents’ Committee we have
proposed a few changes for 2017
on how to get more of our parent community actively involved
in our three main fundraisers
(Bike Ride, Fishing Competition, Colour Run) in order to
spread the workload and develop
more comradery and spirit. We
will communicate these ideas
with you early next year.
Wishing you all a very happy
week, a lovely mid-term weekend
and strength for the rest of the
term – only 27 school days left!
Kind Regards
James

SCHOOL NEWS
What a fantastic start to the fourth term
we have had, with many of our sporting
teams (boys’ cricket and basketball as
well as girls’ basketball) performing well
and achieving comprehensive wins. The
U9/U10 cricket team won a nail biter of
a game this past weekend against Wembley, which was very exciting to watch. A
lovely comment passed on to me from a
parent at a PMB school, at one of these
sports matches this term, was how the
New Hanover Prep. children are renowned in PMB for their fine manners
and wonderful team spirit! As you know
the Grade 3-7 children have been exposed to tennis throughout last term and
again this term during their PE lessons.
These lessons will come to an end after
the mid-term break. We thank Karl von
Fintel for his input and enthusiasm in
this area. Swimming during the PE classes will start after the mid-term break
(starting in the week of the 7th of November). The focus in these lessons will be
on stroke correction, as well as on preparing our children for taking their safety badges later in the term. Our Grades
R – 2 can also look forward to their Fun
Gala later in the term, aimed at preparing them for 2017!
I
remind
you all that
this week
brings our
mid-term
break - incorporating only Monday (31st
October) and not Friday (28th October).
Friday will be a normal school day; however, we will finish a little earlier - @
12:00. Another “event” this week to be
aware
of
is
another
“No Homework
Evening”
on
Wednesday
(26th October). We
would love for our
children to discuss
with you, around
the dinner able,
some of the lessons they have
learnt in assemblies this term,
particularly around the theme of “Straight
A’s”.
Congratulations to our five Grade 7’s who
were confirmed in the NHELC last Sunday (Stefanie, Hanelie, Charnè, Bolan and
Caitlin). What a lovely service it was and
what a huge milestone it is in their lives,
committing themselves to God and confirming their wish to be part of His family.
Our
senior
children
are
preparing for
their
exams
which start at
the end of next
week. As always,
sport
practices during this exam and test time
for our seniors (Grade 5, 6 and 7) is optional and we encourage the children to
be learning during these afternoons, but
also recognise that for some, the opportunity to de-stress and participate in some
physical activities is just as important. Our
school transport will run at the usual
times in the afternoons as sport practices
will continue as usual for all other Grades.
Those children in Grade 5, 6 and 7 who
catch the bus, but would like to use the
afternoons to study, may do so in the li-
brary (supervised by a staff member). However, if during this time
they are not focused on their studies, they will be asked to join the
sports practices. Those not attending practices must excuse themselves from their coach. We wish
our seniors all of the very best for
these tests and exams.
I remind our current Grade R parents that we will welcome you all to
an information morning about the
transition from pre-primary into
primary schooling on Friday the
18th of November (New Pupils
Orientation & Grade Swap Day).
All other Grades will spend the
morning on this day with their
2017 teacher and class. John Love
will be coming in to spend time
with next year’s Grade Seven’s.
We are looking forward to watching
our pre-schoolers next Friday (4
November) at their Nativity Concert. It is sure to be a special morning, with many memories created –
be sure to have your cameras and
video camcorders ready!
As you know, the school photos,
that were taken last term, can be
ordered online. I remind all parents
that all these orders are to please be
made online by Tuesday 1 November if you would like them to be
delivered to the school free of
charge. Orders may still be made
after this date however an additional courier fee will be charged. Details on the ordering process have
once again been included in this

KIDS CORNER
Professional Pusher
Japan is indeed a hardworking nation. It makes sure that all its people reach
work on time and that's why Japan has employed people to push others onto
trains so that nobody's late for work.
Professional Stand-In-Liner
As long as there are queues in the world, Narabiyas (Japanese for stand-in-liners) will never be
out of fashion. These freelancers will happily wait in long queues for you as long as you pay
them some money.
Professional Sleeper
My first reaction when I came across this job was... Wow! You actually get paid to...
Sleep! Professional Sleepers doze off while scientists conduct research on sleep disorders.
This has to be undoubtedly the most comfortable job on the planet.
Vomit Cleaner
Some roller coasters dip, rise and turn at such crazy angles that your breakfast is bound to
come out the wrong way. Amusement park owners knew this fact and thus this job came
into being.
Deodorant Tester
You have a habit of poking your nose into other people's business. Well,
these people poke their noses into other people's armpits to test the odourfighting powers of deodorants.
Wrinkle Chaser
The name says it all. Wrinkle chasers make sure there are no creases on shoes when
they are whisked out of the factory. Yeah, I said that right - shoes . How else do you
think those high-heels look so classy?

KIDS CORNER
Water Slide Tester
All play and no work makes Jack a dull boy. Not in this case, because Jack's work involves a lot of playing in water. Water
Slide Testers have to check all aspects of safety and make sure these rides are absolutely safe. There's always medical
insurance for those who break a bone or two.
Paper Towel Sniffer
Paper towel manufacturers leave no stone unturned (loosely translated to leave no roll unsniffed) in ensuring that their rolls don't smell foul before, during and after use. How do they
check for any unwanted smell after use?
Pet Food Taster
Whoever came up with this job must be a true-blue animal lover or someone who likes to chew
weird-tasting food. Do animals and humans have similar taste buds?
Professional Mourner
You'll need these mourners if nobody cared about you when you were alive. It's sad
that you won't be able to see them mourn for you because you'd be in the coffin.
Bicycle Fishers
Amsterdam is the most bicycle friendly capital city of the world. It's no surprise then that a
lot of these two-wheelers end up in one of the canals, thus giving rise to another profession - the bicycle fisher. Each year Amsterdam fishes out around 14,000 rusty bikes from
its waterways.
Gross Stunt Tester
For every guy who chomps down a grasshopper on a reality show there are many more
who've done the same thing in real life. These crazy guys are called Gross Stunt Testers
and their job includes doing (testing) everything that's gross.
Furniture Tester
As long as the furniture's not made of cactus, this job's pretty cool. You have to sit, wriggle and
sleep on the furniture to asses its comfort. This job is so cool that it's weird.
