UK Libraries lists of databases or its OPAC. No answer is correct unless full source
information is provided. URLs are not necessary but accurate and clearly formatted
references (e.g., APA, MLA) are helpful. No collaborating and no asking for help.
1. What is the word for the wall in a mosque that faces the holy city of Mecca? I would
inform the patron that the answer they are looking for is mihrab and refer them to chapters one
and three of this book for further questions regarding mosque architecture.

2. What is the word for the quality or characteristic of wine that leads to the taste
difference between red and white wines? I would advise the patron that the particular quality
that causes the taste difference between red and white wines are tannins. I would also refer the
patron to the sources I found in the process of searching for the answer if they are interested in
learning more about wines.

3. What source may I use to browse and find biographies by specific indices, such as
ethnicity, geographic terms, place of birth, and so forth? Based on the description of the
BGMI database from UK Libraries’ Biographical Information research guide, I would direct the
patron to use the Biography and Genealogy Master Index.
4. Where can I find a list of handbooks on methods for conducting scientific/scholarly
research? You can find a list of handbooks if you search the University of Kentucky’s
Databases and other electronic resources. Under the ‘Browse by NAME’ category select ‘H’ and
you will be shown many different electronic resources, most of which are handbooks of various
topics, many of which also include sections on research methods for that particular field. This is
the link. I would also recommend the SAGE Encyclopedia of Qualitative Research Methods,
although it is not a handbook.

7. I know that the Springfield News-Leader in Springfield, MO changed its name sometime
in the 1980s, but I don't recall its former name. Can you tell me what that name was and
the date it changed names? Utilizing UK Libraries’ Ethnic and Alternative Newspaper
Collections, led to Wikipedia’s List of Online Newspaper Archives, and then the Springfield
News-Leader website, the paper was formerly known as the Springfield Daily News until 1987
per the ‘About Us’ section of their website.

8. I'm looking for a directory of consumer magazines related to women's interests. Can you
show me how to retrieve such a listing? If you browse the UK Libraries’ research guides, then
you will find the 19th Century Periodicals research guide, which includes a tab on “Digitized
Periodicals: Art & Fashion.” This tab has links to digitized back issues of magazines like
Cosmopolitan, Vanity Fair, Godey’s Lady’s Book, and Everyday Life and Women in America
from the 1800s through the 1900s (in some cases, but not all).

9. What is the phone number for the admissions office at the University of NebraskaLincoln? The phone number of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is 402/472-2023 and their
toll-free number is 1-800/742-8800. This was found by searching the White Pages tool from UK
Libraries’ General Reference Sources which led to a listing with UN-L’s website and eventually
to their Office of Admissions page.
10. What do the initials ASEAN-ABC stand for? ASEAN-ABC stands for Association of

The Ajax Public Library’s Main branch is located at 55 Harwood Ave. South in Ajax, Ontario
L1S 2H8 and their phone number is 905/683-4000. This was found by using UK Libraries’
General Reference Sources, which led to the White Pages and redirected to the library’s listing
on Yellow Pages Canada.
19. How big is the area of the earth in square kilometers and including both land and
water? According to NASA, which is located on the UK Libraries’ Federal Government
Resources research guide, the surface area of Earth is 510,064,472 KM2.
