Charlemagne
Charlemagne came to power in 768 A.D., after the death of
his father who had replace the last of the Merovingian rulers
Charlemagne, or Charles the Great, was great ruler because of
his personal intelligence and interest in rebuilding civilization.
Charlemagne expanded the Frankish Merovingian Empire over
much of Western Europe.
Charlemagne used his power to make things better for the
serfs and tradespeople of his Empire and to improve
education.
Although Charlemagne’s push for education was a far cry from
today’s universal education, he still did a lot to establish new
schools and to encourage learning.
Charlemagne succeed in bringing out a rebirth of learning and
the arts and historians often refer to his time as the
Carolingian Renaissance.
However, like the Merovingians, his Empire fell apart due to
the bickering and in-fighting of his heirs, and their weakness
in the face of Viking invasions.
