2013 ANNUAL REPORT 2 | mazon.org A LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Dear Friends, What does it mean to be a JEWISH response to hunger? Does it mean that we strive to follow particular values and ideals, including tzedakah and tikkun olam? Does it mean that we rally together to care for the most vulnerable in our midst? Does it mean that we feel a rooted obligation to alleviate hunger? Our response is certainly the aforementioned but also so much more. Over nearly three decades, our leaders have defined and redefined what MAZON – and what a JEWISH response – is and means. Starting with our founder, Leonard Fein, and continuing with each of our former Executive Directors, Irv Cramer, Susan Cramer and Dr. Eric Shockman, our leaders have helped to shape the multifaceted organization that we are today. Their accomplishments and dedication inspire us every day. But also framing the JEWISH response is you. You are part of our network of almost 50,000 supporters, partner synagogues, advocates and grantee partners who collectively allow us to be a JEWISH voice in every community. We ask you where you are, and you always answer generously with “Hineni, here I am.” Your support is the cornerstone of every advocacy win, every successful initiative and every grant we award. Because of you, we’ve advocated to create meaningful changes in law and policies that protect the most vulnerable among us. Because of you, we’ve addressed issues in the anti-hunger community that might otherwise remain untouched. Because of you, we have a robust network of grantee partners that expand our reach to communities across the country. All of our accomplishments are because of you. And you, too, should be honored by them. In the forthcoming pages, you’ll read inspiring stories of our devoted donors (page 10, 12 and 19), our advocacy efforts (page 19), and the impact of our grantmaking (page 26). By working together, we will no doubt transform how it is, into how it should be. Justice, justice you shall pursue. -Deuteronomy 16:20 B’shalom Abby J. Leibman President & CEO Rabbi Harold Kravitz Board Chair mazon.org | 3 4 | mazon.org Chair Rabbi Harold Kravitz, Minnetonka, MN Vice Chair Our Jewish Ideals Jews share a sacred duty to accept responsibility for the vulnerable people in our midst. MAZON seeks to uphold that obligation by embodying twin Jewish ideals: Shirley Davidoff, Dallas,TX Vice Chair Ruth Laibson, Philadelphia, PA Secretary Robin Thomas, Oakland, CA Treasurer TZEDAKAH Justice TIKKUN OLAM Repair the World We support hundreds of nonprofit organizations that provide for vulnerable people today. We work to develop and advance long-term solutions so that no one goes hungry tomorrow. Adam L. Berger, Boston, MA Board of Directors Robert L. Leibman We employ three interrelated strategies as part of our holistic approach to ending hunger: Education and Advocacy Partnership Grants Strategic Initiatives Working to ensure that hungry people have access to nutritious food today and that no one goes hungry tomorrow. Awarding financial grants that strengthen our partners’ ability to serve the needs of hungry people in their communities. Creating and implementing innovative programs that advance knowledge and capacity within the anti-hunger community. mazon.org | 5 “Hunger is an issue that everyone can get behind – how can you be on the other side of hunger?” Sweet Honey Tzedakah The Brandeis Hillel Day School website lists Ometz Lev (Integrity), Chesed (Kindness) and Tikkun Olam (Service) as core values. As we’ve gotten to know them the last few years, it’s clear that they are a community that embodies these qualities. Three years ago, in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, the Parent Association at Brandeis Hillel sampled apples and honey in the school lobby, which was very well-received. “One parent asked if we were selling the honey, and we thought we should be – it would be a festive fundraiser for tzedakah. So the next year we did,” Jacqueline Shelton-Miller, Brandeis Parent and Parent Association Honey Sale Chair, tells us. “At this time of plenty, when we’re getting together with family and friends to bring in the New Year 6 | mazon.org and to celebrate, we have a perfect opportunity to think about people who aren’t as fortunate, who aren’t sitting at our table and who might not even have enough to eat.” Brandeis Hillel started selling Marshall’s Farm Honey and Irving’s Premium Honey Cakes (both local to San Francisco) and the sales have been tremendously successful. In just two short years, they have raised over $7,000 for MAZON - truly making it “A Sweet Year” for all. Brandeis Hillel Day School is an independent co-educational school for students in grades K-8 on two campuses – San Francisco and San Rafael (Marin County). Their mission is to serve the Jewish community by providing children with an outstanding academic program in general and Judaic studies within a dynamic and diverse Jewish cultural environment. (Which is precisely the idea upon which MAZON was founded.) Instead of registering for gifts, the couple “registered” with four charities: a local organization (Congregation Beth Shalom in Seattle, their synagogue); a national organization (MAZON); an organization in Israel (New Israel Fund) and an organization with global impact (American Jewish World Service) asking their guests to make a contribution to one of the organizations in lieu of gifts. MAZON was a natural choice because hunger is an important issue for both of them. “If you’re hungry you can’t really do anything. You can’t think, you can’t be productive…and it’s so easy to all of a sudden find yourself in a position of food insecurity. MAZON is a meaningful organization to us because we value the importance of both providing immediate assistance and working to create long-term solutions to end hunger.” What would they like to pass on to others? “Far too often we focus on taking care of ourselves first. And in this world of abundance, it is our responsibility to care. We all live in a better world when no one is hungry. We have the ability to change lives.” David Finkler Steven & Adriana Finnie David Firestone & Susan Brenna Rick Fischel Dr. Keith Fishbein & Dr. Nancy Feldman Eric Fishman & Dr. Shuly Schwartz Rachel Flamholz Dr. Robert & Amy Folberg The Ford Foundation The Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies The Foundation For The Jewish Community Fox Family Foundation Eugene Fram The Frank Family Fund Allan Freedman Dr. Matthew & Dr. Gladys A. Gloria Greengard is doing just this. After hearing about MAZON at Temple Isaiah in West Los Angeles, Gloria was inspired to turn mindless snacking into an opportunity to give back. For the last 12 years (yes, 12!) each time Gloria eats a snack at work, she marks a tally on a post-it. When the tally marks reach 50, she sends a gift to MAZON and starts the whole process over again. Not only do her gifts to MAZON make a difference in the lives of others, but her post-it serves as a visual reminder that not everyone has access to snacks – or even meals - when they are hungry. “Giving to MAZON has become a part of my life. At my temple, we are taught that if you’re fortunate, you should share it with others. While we donate to other charities, giving the ‘snack money’ to MAZON just seems like the pragmatic thing to do.” Snacking has never been so meaningful! I asked why and as she glanced towards a man sitting on the steps of a church she told me that she wanted to buy him coffee and a sandwich,” Stuart Gleich recalls. That single gesture, a grand one for a 10-year-old, turned into something much greater and with lasting effect on their family. After that cold day in NYC, Stuart, his wife Debra, and their children Elizabeth and Joshua started giving to MAZON, a tradition they’ve upheld for the last 20 years. They learned about our work through their synagogue, Temple Rodeph Torah of Western Monmouth, NJ and appreciate that while we are a Jewish response to hunger, we work to end hunger among all faiths and backgrounds. The Gleich family embraces the idea that giving should be a habit - part of their every day effort to realize Tikkun Olam. “We live in a tough world. If you have food, clothes, a warm home…you are blessed and you should find a way to give. Give what you can, small amounts grow into large amounts over time,” Stuart urges. “Giving has become routine for us and we give by sending tribute cards. We send them for joyous occasions, for congratulations, and in sympathy. And no matter what the occasion – happy or sad – the recipients are always thrilled. It means so much to them and also for us - we’re able to help those who need it.” L’dor V’dor (from generation to generation) certainly rings true for giving in the Gleich family. MAZON Advocacy Projects Our belief is that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. It’s why our commitment to advocacy is the foundation of our work and why we launched a renewed commitment to empower our synagogue partners to join our advocacy efforts through the MAZON Advocacy Project (MAP). programs, to supporting local and sustainable farming, to increasing access to nutritious food, to influencing state implementation of SNAP. Together, MAZON and MAP participants are working to transform how it is into how it should be. MAP unites synagogues, grantees and like-minded advocates into a powerful constituency to advance the interests and dignity of those who struggle with food insecurity. Current MAP initiatives (see map for locations in blue) led by local synagogues are actively addressing issues ranging from reforming school breakfast and lunch mazon.org | 19 SUSTAINER SOCIETY cont. Changes to policy are slow and a product not of a single strategy, but the cumulative effect of multiple strategies over time. The work can be frustrating and thankless. It requires immense flexibility because no matter what you anticipate, especially in our current political climate, modifications and cuts to programs can come out of (what seems like) thin air. While advocacy work is challenging, it’s worth it. Our desire to create long-term solutions to ending hunger is why all of our partner grantees must include advocacy in their work. Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (JFS) is a multiservice agency that provides a wide range of human services (SOVA Community Food & Resource Program, Senior Services, Shelter Services for Survivors of Domestic Violence, Home Delivered Meals, Counseling, Child & Family Services, Services for People with Disablities) to poor and disadvantaged people in their community. But JFS is more than just a direct-service provider; they actively – and successfully - advocate on behalf of their clients as well. Why is advocacy work a priority at JFS? “Direct service is critically important, but if we can fix issues legislatively… we can make a societal-level difference. You have to have both,” Paul S. Castro, JFS CEO tells us. Advocacy looks different at every organization and depending on each goal, what does it look like at JFS LA? • Federal level: meet with members of congress and conduct senior meal site visits; send advocacy alerts • State or Regional level: provide testimony about anti-hunger legislation; educate legislators about the impacts of poverty and hunger 26 | m a z o n . o r g • Local or Community level: encourage community partners to support anti-hunger safety-net programs • Organizational level: work to expand and simplify enrollment in CalFresh (SNAP) • Media and Public education: bring attention to the real impact of hunger through social media, newsletters, press releases, paper plate campaigns and participate in local hunger awareness events • SNAP Outreach: assist with CalFresh enrollment at JFS SOVA locations What advice would Paul give to organizations just beginning their advocacy journey? Start simple and build relationships. “Find out who your representatives are, leverage existing relationships and talk about what you do. Advocacy work is all about relationship-building – and not always asking for something.” As for what inspires and guides JFS? Jewish values. “Tikkun olam – repairing the world – clearly is an underpinning value for what we do and our advocacy work.” And we couldn’t agree more. GRANTEES cont.
