Everyone
It is the year 1241. All of Russia lies in ruins, lain
waste by the heathen Mongols under Batu
Khan. He now stands ready to cross the Carpathians into Hungary. The Kings of Europe
must put aside their petty wars and stand against
him or surely they will perish!

OPEN FIELD BATTLE – 2 bouts with Resurrection. The first open
field battle will be all three armies in contention with one another
(War Point Battle). Having settled any dispute, the Western armies
will face the Mongol Horde. Archery is definitely on in this scenario.
BRIDGE BATTLE – (Western armies vs. Mongol Horde) Once again,
this is a timed resurrection battle consisting of 1 bridge with a central resurrection point easily accessible by both sides. The object is
to win and occupy the other side of the bridge. Again, the duration
of the battle will be undisclosed. Step off or get pushed off the side
of the bridge is instant drowning. Archery is again on for this scenario.
CASTLE AND CITY BATTLE – (War Point Battle - All armies will fight
this battle as a round robin. For Example: Mongols attack/Poles
defend; Poles attack/Hungarians defend, Hungarians attack/
Mongols defend). This will be a standard Castle/City battle with
each army having a turn to hold and attack the Castle/City. The
army holding or capturing the Castle/City will win the point. Combat Archery and Siege Engines will come in handy in this battle.
RIVER CROSSING BATTLE – (War Point Battle - All three armies will
fight this battle as a round robin. For Example: Mongols attack/
Poles defend; Poles attack/Hungarians defend, Hungarians attack/
Mongols defend). The objective is to win and occupy the other side
of the crossing or to successfully defend it from the attackers. No
Resurrection in these battles.
Stepping out of bounds in the crossing is instant drowning. Knights
and Squires (to include Centurions) may cross standing (as if
mounted)…all others must cross on their knees (as if wading). Archery is on for this scenario.
Archery
This year’s archery will competition will be done in the spirit of the
mighty Mongol horse archers, i.e., shooting while moving. Archers
will ride a straw bale ‘horse’ in a moving ‘wagon’ while shooting at
multiple targets. Archers may shoot as many arrows as they can
between the starting and ending points. Each archer will declare
for one of the three Kings and the high scorer will win the war point
for his/her King.
At the beginning of winter in 1237 a Mongol army of 120,000 led by
Batu Kahn, grandson of the mighty Genghis, crossed the frozen
Volga River into Russia. The contentious Russian princes could not
unite against the invaders and one after another their principalities
fell. By December of 1240 Russia lay in smoking ruins and the Mongols prepared for their most audacious move yet: the invasion of
Europe. The Kingdom of Hungary was the Mongols’ first objective.
Its troubled King Bela IV, beset by enemies both within and without,
valiantly attempted to mount a defense. The Mongols knew that
Hungary would be difficult to defeat and thus it was essential to
prevent any reinforcement from Poland and Bohemia. Batu split his
army sending a force of 20,000 of his best Mangudai to the north to
engage the Poles while his main force of 100,000 plowed through
the Hungarian defenses in the passes of the Carpathians. The Northern Mongol army burned and pillaged across Poland finally engaging
the army of Duke Henry the Pious of Silesia at Liegnitz. Henry had
assembled a force of Polish nobles, Silesian cavalry, and conscripts,
and small but splendid contingent of Teutonic Knights to repel the
Mongol assault. Using the old steppe
tactic of the feigned retreat, the
Mongols slaughtered Henry’s army
leaving the Polish aristocracy and
the flower of Northern Europe’s
chivalry dead upon the field. They
then turned south to join Batu.
Batu’s main army, meanwhile, had
swept into eastern Hungary. After
receiving word of the Mongol victory
at Liegnitz, Batu retreated across
the Sajo River by the only bridge and
prepared to engage the Hungarians
on the heath at Mohi. The Battle of Mohi lasted two days and involved multiple attacks and counter attacks across the Sajo Bridge.
In the end, the Mongols managed to flank the Hungarians’ position
by sending a large contingent across the river twenty miles to the
north during the night. The Hungarians panicked and fled west
through a gap in the Mongol lines. This, as it turned out, was an
intentional ploy by the Mongols. After allowing the Hungarians to
stretch out over several miles, the Mongols closed on both sides,
cutting the Hungarians down with arrows as they fled. Nearly
80,000 Hungarians were slaughtered and King Bela barely managed
to escape, eventually seeking asylum in Croatia. For the next year
the Mongols occupied Hungary, resting and preparing for an assault
upon Austria and the rest of Europe. Then, just as Europe braced
for the expected attack, the Mongols suddenly rode back across the
Danube, retreating into Russia and the steppe, never to be seen
again. By fateful chance, Batu had received word of the death of
Ogedei Khan, Batu’s uncle. He and all his forces were commanded
to return to Mongolia to elect a new ruler. Thus was Europe spared
the fate of Russia and escaped the grip of the Mongol yoke.
Three Kings Principals
War Chest
Each person participating in any of the scheduled war point activities is asked to bring a prize to contribute to the War Chest.
These items will be collected at Armor Inspection and should be of
such a quality that you would be honored to receive it. The War
Chest will be awarded to the victorious King and his allies!
The Shire of Rosenfeld is pleased to announce
the principals for Three Kings
Send in the Khans!:
Sir Gethin Albrit as Batu Khan
Sir Alexis Le Bouche as Duke Henry the Pious
Centurion Almarr Bjarnklo as King Bela of Hungary
Equestrian
This year’s Equestrian competition will be a ‘Lightening Raid’ scenario. The Great Khan needs supplies for his troops. Accordingly,
riders will have four minutes to raid a peaceful village and collect
as much loot as they can carry. Riders must: shoot two combat
arrows at sentries, open a gate, collect booty, and flee out the
gate. There will be many, let’s say, ‘interesting’ objects to loot,
each with a different point value. Riders will lose points for each 15
seconds over the four minutes allowed.
In addition there will be a class, ‘SCA Horses - How to enjoy equestrian activities for the non-rider’ taught by THL Alicia Seale at 8:00
am and an Equestrian Challenge offered by THL Celestine Albrit at
10:00 am for which prizes will be awarded.
Arts and Sciences
This year, we invite each King to acquire artisans who will represent him in the Arts & Sciences competition. Each artisan is asked
to bring their best single item for judging. At the end of the day,
the King with the most total (cumulative) points will be awarded
the War Point for Arts & Sciences.
Chivalric Scenarios
WOODS BATTLE – (War Point Battle - All three armies in contention
with one another) Timed Battle with resurrection. Resurrection is
accomplished by checking in at the “Resurrection Point” and returning to the battle. The objective is to capture the opposing
army’s flags. The captured flag must be presented at the
“Resurrection Point” to be counted toward the win. The winner will
be determined by most
flags captured No archery
in this scenario.
Poles – Red
Hungarians – Gold
Mongols – Black
