Application of 3M™ Overlaminate Film for Validation Stickers Using Web Process Hot Stamp Print Label Equipment Product Bulletin Lorem Information Folder 9.3 ipsumDate 0000 June 2014 Replaces IF 9.3 dated January 2013 Introduction 3M Label Sheeting, Validation Security Sheeting with Ensure™ Image and 3M™ Overlaminate Film are designed for the production of reflective labels and validation stickers. The sheetings are printable with hot stamp label making equipment using commercially available hot stamp foils which are then protected with a clear, weather resistant overlaminate film. The sheetings and films have pressure sensitive adhesives protected by removable liners. ™ Printing Reflective sheetings can be printed with commercially available hot stamp foils and printers. The hot stamp foils are opaque and printed copy of reflective sheeting will appear black when viewed by reflected light. To obtain maximum reflectivity of finished stickers and visibility of security markings, it is recommended that sticker copy be direct printed only. When using Validation Security Sheeting with Ensure™ Image, the label printer should provide the correct orientation of the printed design with the security image. Consecutive numbering must read across the web. Contact a 3M technical representative for assistance on mark orientation, roll unwind direction and liner scoring requirements. Both face and liner side printing are possible with certain hot stamp label maker processes using reflective sheetings. Contact your equipment supplier to determine accessories and adjustments needed to attain optimum printing. Print head temperature must be maintained according to foil and equipment supplier recommendations. Some units require precaution to minimize contact of the sheeting and overlaminate stocks with the heated surfaces to prevent web breaks. Processing 3M™ Overlaminate Film Y-7735FL is applied in continuous fashion after all design and number printing resulting in a smooth, clear laminate. Thread-up leaders may be necessary in some units and subsequent rolls should be spliced to the preceding roll for operational convenience. Allowances must be made for roll thread-up and splices when considering quantities. A waste factor of 1.2 to 2.5% has been reported by some users when operating at normal conditions. For new programs a 3% waste factor is suggested for estimating material requirements. In-process die cutting for the overlaminate/sheeting construction is possible, but users are cautioned to maintain cutting dies in sharp condition. Experience to date shows that butt cut processing provides maximum cutter life as compared to steel rule die cut method. Roll lengths supplied by 3M are 250 yards maximum. Widths of sheeting will depend on the design and machne capability. Some machines require overlaminate stock width to be 1/8 inch narrower than base stock to allow for proper stock alignment on finished stickers. Equipment and foils evaluated to date include Markerm Corporation Hot Stamp Label Maker LP 375 TS and Markem Corp. Series 730 matte hot stamp foils. With this unit and Series 730 foils, the print heads must be kept as close to 250°F as possible when printing on reflective sheetings. Another unit used successfully is the Model 164 Franklin Precision Hot Stamping Machine, Franklin Manufacturing Corp., Norwood, MA. Users are cautioned to assure themselves that processing and finished stickers will meet their expected requirements.
