Volunteer of the Month: Anita Henlein
Department: Pastoral Care
Insert Picture
My name is Anita Henlein and I have been a Pastoral Care volunteer
for 28 years. I bring the Holy Eucharist to the Catholic patients at
St. Joseph Hospital.
My desire to become a volunteer was born out of tragic circumstances.
Thirty years ago my husband was a patient at a non Catholic hospital in
Ohio. People from a neighboring church brought the Holy Eucharist to
him. He very much enjoyed their visit. I was so moved by the way pastoral care volunteers provided the
Holy Eucharist and compassion that I wanted to volunteer in this way.
After the death of my husband, my daughter and I returned to Ypsilanti. I contacted the Pastoral
Care Department, and Sr. Mary Victorine Rapin trained me. I was still teaching and so was only able to
volunteer on Sunday mornings. When I retired six years ago I added Monday as my second volunteer
day.
Visiting with patients is what I enjoy most. That is why I am here, to serve the patients sharing with their
sorrows and joys. It is an extremely fulfilling ministry and I am always thankful for the opportunity to serve
as a volunteer.

means ten. It was originally the tenth month of the year in the Roman calendar which
began with March. When January and February were added to the Roman calendar,
December became the twelfth month of the Gregorian calendar. It is one of the seven
months that has thirty one days.
