June 3, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians, The final month of the school year is here! Can you believe it? Here are some highlights: Monday: We practiced writing sentences with word wall words of our choice. In Math we compared and sorted different 2D shapes. In Science we learned about animal habitat and researched the habitat of their own bugs. In Social we inquired and researched about why the Inuit settled in Iqaluit. We had the Talent Show in the afternoon. FSE definitely has talent! I was especially proud of the students in our class: Nathan, Owen, Amy, and Ella. Tuesday: In Social we inquired and researched about why the Acadians settled in Meteghan. We began writing our spelling test of all 125 word wall words. We read the story Diary of a Worm as a mentor text for using voice in our writing. In Math we created our own 2D shapes and sorting rules. In Science we learned that different bugs can be eaten by predators as a food source. We learned about food chains. In PE we demonstrated our Black Belt Attitude in some very intense fitness circuits. Wednesday: Happy 8th Unbirthday Hayden! In Writer’s Workshop we began practicing the writing trait of Word Choice. We read the story The Best Class Picture Ever! and wrote different words that make us smile/laugh. In Math we continued creating our own 2D shapes and sorting rules in partners. In Social we inquired and researched about why the Ukrainian’s settled in Saskatoon. In Science we watched a video clip about insects and their unique characteristics. Thursday: In Social Studies we studied a Then and Now photo of Saskatoon and wrote about the changes that have happened over time. In Writer’s Workshop we came up with a big lists of synonyms for common words to strengthen our word choice. In Math we observed and described 3D objects. In Science we learned about how bugs can protect themselves in unique ways like camoflauge. We also learned about how some bugs can be helpful and/or harmful to the environment. In PE we began learning some Track and Field events. We practiced running relays with a baton in pairs and we tested out our high jump skills. Friday: Happy 8th Birthday Ashton, Jordyn and Klöe! In Writer’s Workshop we practiced using stronger word choices and adding details in our home journals. In Math we continued studying and describing the attributes of different 3D objects. We read the story Diary of a Fly as another example of how writer’s put voice in their writing. In Science we continued researching our bugs using the Chromebooks and non-fiction books. In Art we learned about symmetry and drew/coloured the other half of a bug as symmetrically as we could. In PE we went outside and practiced relay running. We also learned the running long jump and standing long jump. Things to know: We’ve begun testing the students on all the 125 word wall words from Grade 2. Please find a few minutes each night to review these words. Students do enjoy playing review games on spellingcity.com! URGENT: Track and Field Fun Day is coming up this Friday! FSE is still in need of more parent volunteers! Please let me or the school know ASAP if you or someone you know can help out in the morning, afternoon, or all day! Upcoming week: On Monday Happy 8th Birthday Austin! We have our Community Assembly at 10:25AM. On Tuesday we have the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village field trip all day.
