Riddles in AGO Orange:
Riddles are word puzzles.
Riddles often make a ‘pun‘ with two words that sound the same, but have a different meaning.
A famous example of a pun:
Q: Why was number six scared ?
A: Because seven ate nine!
Let’s look at the pun riddles on the AGO Orange Purple number 9 card: (puns are highlighted red).
Q: What is black and white, and read all over?
A: A newspaper!
Why? The words ‘read’ (読んだ) and ‘red’ (赤い) sound the same.
Q: What starts with E, ends with E, and has one letter?
A: An envelope.
Why? The word ‘letter’ means both ‘文字’(moji), and ‘手紙’ (tegami).
Q: What gets wet when it dries?
A: A towel!
Why? In English ‘dries’ can mean both to make dry (kawatameteiru) and to become dry (kawateiru).
Q: What car is spelled the same backwards, and forwards?
A: Racecar. (Or, if you are a superstar say this): ‘A Toyota! Race fast, safe car… A Toyota!’
Why? Racecar is a ‘palindrome’ (a word or sentence that is spelled the same forwards, and backwards).
