Spotlight on School January 20, 2017 SEMESTER IN REVIEW (CONT.) Jack and Hazel Supporting School Choice Week National School Choice Week is held every January and is designed to shine a positive spotlight on effective education options for children. This year’s celebration is January 22-28, 2017. Please help us spread the good word about the phenomenal educational experiences we provide students, and encourage prospective parents to contact us for a tour. JKL Points of Pride: Anishinaabe Culture Small class sizes Low student to staff ratio Orchestra Program Gifted & Talented Program Competitive middle school sports Strong parental involvement Free After School Programs Culturally diverse environment Semester in Review We started our year off with the Welcome Back BBQ and a summer reading celebration. This summer recorded more minutes than the summer before. We had a great fall book fair. As a result of our sales, we now have almost $3,000 in book credits. The Fall Craft Fair/ Apple Sale brought many people to our school and earned the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) approximately $2,500.00 to be used toward the Santa Store. In October, families were invited to attend a Fall Feast with hay rides, pumpkin carving, and a family Halloween Party. The number of participants at family events has increased this year. In November we celebrated the end of the first marking period with a Drum Dance Social. Ogimaa-Minisinoo (school drum) as well as Aabizii (Bay Mills) and the Bahweting Singers (Sault Ste. Marie) helped the students celebrate. Family activities for November included a Veterans’ Day Assembly, Gifts in a Jar Night (making recipes in jars to give as gifts), Family Book Night (each child received 3 free books of their choice,) a Social Studies Workshop featuring activities to raise global awareness, and participation in the local Holiday Parade. In December, students were able to purchase gifts for their family members at the Santa Store. In December PAC hosted an antique photo fundraiser that was able to raise additional money for the Santa Store. The final family event of the year was the Elf Extravaganza. Parents and students enjoyed making several crafts and sampling snacks as we celebrated Elijah and Esmerelda BoJingles (our school Elves on the Shelf) before they headed back to the North Pole until next year. January saw the partnership of JKL Bahweting School and Sault Tribe Law Enforcement join forces to raise money for the Sault Tribe Junior Police Academy and the 8th Grade Class Trip in the first ever charity basketball game here at JKL – The Fuzz vs. The Staff. Four PAC Meetings were held featuring topics such as Title I, homelessness resources, fundraising, and reproductive health. Important Attendance Reminder Regular attendance at school is essential for educational growth. The school day begins at 8:20 a.m. Any student who arrives in the classroom past 8:20 a.m. will be considered tardy. Four tardies equal one full day’s absence. All absences both excused and unexcused are subject to the Truancy Protocol if the absences are effecting student success. Please review the truancy protocol in your Parent and Student Handbook for clarification and contact the main office if you have any questions. Eagle Athletics The first semester is over already! Middle School Sports are successfully competing for the first year in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference. Four JKL students were named to the All-Conference Cross Country Team. Girls’ Basketball (both elementary and Middle School) are over and we are in the last stretch of Middle School Boys’ Basketball/POMS and the second week of Elementary Boys Basketball/Cheer. Next up is Middle School Track & Field which will begin at the beginning of April. A formal athletic banquet will be at the end of the year with recognition for all athletics. Date and time will be sent at a later date. Stay current with all athletic announcements on the Athletic tab at JKLSchool.org or JKL Eagle Athletics on Facebook Page. Behavior Update We have started setting school wide behavioral goals to earn incentives. If, as a school, the students have under a certain amount of referrals, all students will be able to attend the PBIS event. Students are made aware at the beginning of the month what the goal is and what the incentive will be. So far both elementary and middle school students have earned all of their monthly incentives. Elementary students enjoyed an offsite movie/ popcorn afternoon, a grade level dodgeball game, and a grade level dance. Middle school participated in a staff/student dodgeball game, played Capture the Flag at Minneapolis Hill, and earned an ice skating trip. The referrals are down 17% from last year An Exciting New Space at JKL JKL has a brand new MakerSpace. A MakerSpace is an area where kids have the opportunity to make – a place where some tools, materials, and instruction can get them started. A MakerSpace shares some aspects of a shop class, a home economics class, an art studio, and a science lab. Our MakerSpace is in the back of the library and has supplies for our students to experiment with circuits, crocheting/sewing, photography, movie making, 3D printing, crafts, painting, jewelry making, Legos/K’nex, robotics, computer science coding, and a host of other STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities. The sky is the limit as our students learn through creation using the JKL MakerSpace!
