2016 CHINA TRIP – “THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME”
“The best week of my life” and “an unforgettable experience” are just two among many
extremely positive comments from students who spent the October half-term holiday visiting
China. So what made the visit so exceptional?
We travelled by plane, coach and overnight train to four cities and experienced first-hand Chinese
culture.

YEAR 9 STUDENT WINS YOUNG VOLUNTEER
OF THE YEAR AWARD
On Monday 17 October Phoenix Govey-Gray (9J) and
her parents attended Surrey Heath’s Annual Sports
Awards at Camberley Theatre. Phoenix had been
nominated for 'Young Volunteer of the Year' because
of everything she does in her own time to help and
encourage others in their judo. She attends seminars
and meetings to keep herself up to date with rules
and regulations as a junior referee and she also
assists in the coaching of under 12s, taking them to
competitions and coaching them during their fights.
Phoenix was shortlisted as a finalist!

COLLINGWOOD RUGBY NEWS
Our Year 9 team has recently played two
tournaments. The first was a Surrey Cup
tournament. Collingwood comprehensively won all
four matches against Weydon, Salesian (Chertsey)
and Howard of Effingham. Of those schools two
made it to the semi-finals of the Surrey Cup last
year. On Monday 17 October Collingwood played
in the Gordon’s 12 a side tournament in very wet
conditions. Collingwood won against Winston
Churchill, drew with Fullbrook and lost to Gordon’s
and Heathside. Well done for a good start to the
Autumn term.
Team: Imrule Munshi 9I, Harry Johnson 9E, Josh Lovell-Smith 9I, Dan Glendinning 9E,
Luke Wiseman 9C, Tom Wyatt 9K, Chris Lear 9E, Cameron Voss 9C, Danny Watson 9K,
Sam Attard 9A, Finn Ward 9E, Toby Nowell 9C, George Inoke 9K, Matt Hill 9A, Judd Dugdale 9B,
Euan Jardine 9D, Jay Dhaliwal 9F, Dan Parry 9E.
The Year 11 team also played a Surrey Cup game on
Monday against a school known for their rugby, Glyn (an
Epsom school). Unfortunately due to illness we could not
field a full 15 players but had 10; so we played 10 v
12. Collingwood scored two excellent tries in the first half
with conversions kicked by Cameron Reid. After half
time Glyn picked up their game and scored in the middle
of the half to draw the game. Collingwood continued to
attack. However, during the last play of the game too
many penalties were given away and they bundled over
near the try line. We managed to turn the ball over and
the slippery ball popped out and Glyn dotted it down for
the try. Collingwood 14 – 21 Glyn.

Girls’ rugby is well underway and we have our young leaders helping out giving one to one
coaching. These Year 10s and 11s play rugby themselves. The under 13 girls receive extra help to
bring them up to speed for their fixtures starting on 20 October as they have never played contact
rugby before. First impressions over the first few weeks is they are going to be amazing and I’m
excited to see how well they do.

2016 CHINA TRIP – “THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME”

In Beijing nearly all the group managed to climb to
the top of the Great Wall and were enthralled by the
spectacular views across the countryside which
awaited them and made the arduous climb
worthwhile.
We travelled by rickshaw through the old city of
Beijing called the Hutongs, we met a Chinese family
and ate in their home before visiting The Summer
Palace - The Emperor’s holiday retreat!
We were
amazed by
the massive
size and sense
of history in
Tiananmen
Square, where
Chairman Mao
proclaimed the
establishment of
the People’s
Republic of
China in 1949
and in
1989 the
tanks rolled in to disperse the crowds who were
protesting.
NEWS
Have you ever eaten scorpion, spider or snake? Many
of the group now have, as these were among the
exotic delicacies on sale in the night market we visited
one evening before leaving Beijing! (Eating of these
delicacies was not compulsory!)
The group got to grips with bartering at the Pearl
Market and saw it as a great challenge to buy their
souvenirs and gifts as cheaply as possible.
& VIEWS
The overnight train to Xian was memorable for the small compartments into which we crowded for
the 12-hour journey.

Even more memorable was the sight of the terracotta warriors
which were made according to the instructions of an Emperor
more than 2000 years ago and only recently discovered by
accident in 1974. The warriors and their horses are life-size
and no two are identical. They occupy a field larger than a
football field and there are still thousands more underground
waiting to be excavated!
In Xian we also took a
cable car ride up the
volcanic mountain to
see the city from
above before dipping
our hands in the hot
springs.
Our next stop was
Shanghai, the most
modern of China’s
cities, with
skyscrapers
more than 100
stories high.
We took an
elevator to the
top of the Pearl Oriental TV tower and gazed down
through a glass platform at the river, ships and smaller
skyscrapers far below us.
NEWS
No trip to Shanghai would be complete without a trip to
the famous Yu Yuan Gardens and Market.
A highlight of the visit for many students was the visit to
Jiangning School, our link school in the Putuo district of
Shanghai. We were warmly welcomed and treated to
some
delightful
performances of traditional Chinese music and dancing.
Our students also provided enjoyable demonstrations of
modern dancing. Most of the group went with students from
the school to their homes for one night. Everyone had a
different experience of life in a Chinese home and talked
excitedly about what had happened for most of the
following day!! For many, this was the highlight of the trip.

A night of Karaoke awaited those that didn’t take
part in the homestay and we were treated to
some memorable renditions of Rick Astley’s
‘Never Gonna Give You Up!’
Our last day was spent in the Chinese silk capital
of Suzhou. The city is often called ‘the Venice of
China’ due to its ancient waterways. We had a
river cruise from where we could see Chinese life
from a different perspective. We also visited
the silk factory that made the area famous as
well as indulging in some last minute shopping
and bartering in the market.
I would like to thank all the students and staff on
the trip who were amazing at all times, despite
some late nights and early starts! This was our 4th trip to
China and it’s easy to see why every visit the students return
and call it their ‘trip of a lifetime’
Why not be part of our next trip to China!
Letters will shortly be available on the portal for our next trip
in 2018 which is open to applications from Years 9, 10 and
11 students on a first come, first served basis. In the
meantime,
please email or
speak to Mr
McKay or Mrs
Jones to register
your interest in
coming on the
next trip.

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES - UPDATE
At the end of September, the MFL Department celebrated European Day of World Languages
through a range of activities.
Years 7 and 8 students were asked to
write an acrostic poem using the word
LANGUAGES. What a success! The
quality of the poems was amazing, so
much so that it was impossible to decide
which was the best.
The MFL Department has been hugely
impressed by students' creativity and
style. Well done to all!

LOCAL DERBY ENDS IN 4-1 VICTORY FOR
COLLINGWOOD’S YEAR 11 TEAM
This Collingwood/Tomlinscote derby started off at a fiery pace. For the first ten minutes Tomlinscote
dominated possession but could not get any clear cut chances. However, it was Collingwood who
first broke away when Elijah Anyan burst down the right wing, before whipping the ball across
Tomlinscote’s 6 yard line for Joe Burrell to tap in at the far post. But Tomlinscote soon struck back
when a floated ball into the box was struck in from close range. This again left Tomlinscote with
momentum and they almost struck in another when a similar ball was floated in and kneed towards
goal. However, Scott Heard was equal to it, pulling off a miraculous fingertip save. Collingwood
soon managed to convert another, as Harry Rice flicked a great ball round the corner into the run of
Joe Burrell who finished calmly claiming his second of the half.
After a brilliant first half performance by Collingwood they continued with the same hunger and drive
into the second half and soon found the back of the net again. Once again, Elijah Anyan burst down
the right wing into space before lofting his cross to the back post where Callum Palmer drove his
header into the Tomlinscote net. At this point Tomlinscote tried to get back into the game by
dominating possession, however they did not create many chances and only really worried
Collingwood’s defence with one long shot that zipped over the bar and one lofted cross which was
cleared off the line by Calum Wright at the back post. Tensions were still high as one goal would put
Tomlinscote back into the match. Late into the second half Collingwood managed to seal the game
with an amazing solo goal by Beeshesh Rana, who dribbled the ball from the half way line all the
way down the left hand side of the pitch before cutting inside and slotting the ball through the legs of
the Tomlinscote keeper at the tightest of angles. The outcome was now pretty much decided and
soon after the whistle blew.

TOPPING UP FUNDS ON STUDENTS CARDS
We are seeing an increase in the number of students visiting the year offices without any money
on their cards to purchase food and drink. Could we please respectfully remind parents to
ensure that funds are available for students to use by topping up funds on ParentPay if they have
not been provided with a packed lunch.

YEAR 9 FOOTBALLERS MARCH ON WITH 5-2
VICTORY
The Year 9 football team continued their fine form from the Madrid Football Tour over half-term to progress
into the 3rd round of the Surrey County Cup.
On Tuesday 1 November we entertained St Andrews School from Leatherhead. The boys took a little while
to adjust back to playing on grass pitches after the nice lush 4g pitches of Madrid but soon started to find
their rhythm. The back four looked solid with debutant Callum Gunn fitting in nicely. The boys started to find
their passing game and soon enough we took the lead with a good finish from Jakob Carl. Just before half
time we made it 2-0 with a well taken goal by Kyle Odendaal after some excellent build up play.
The second half began and our boys continued to control the game. We soon managed to score three more
goals from Jakob Carl (2) and Jonathan Marsh. Late on, St Andrews rallied with two goals but the win never
looked in doubt.
We move onto next week now in the National Cup with a 3rd round game against St Pauls, Sunbury.
Team: Jacob Cowler, Cameron San Emeterio, Joe Terry, Callum Gunn, Alex Emery, Stanley Grosch,
Oli Ewing ©, Josh Ford, Charlie Hawes, Kyle Odendaal, Jakob Carl, Dan Simmonds, Lewis Collin,
Matthew Barnett, Jonathan Marsh and Sean Cullen.
Man of the Match: Alex Emery – another solid display at the back.
