Newsletter of the Flagstaff Flyers R/C Airplane Club June 2004 Come Have Some Fun Annual Long Fly is Sunday - June 6 Our annual long fly is on the 6th of June. Once again it will be held just outside of Winslow. The chariman of this years long fly, Rick Magnan has put together a poker run stlyle event. With prizes going to the group with the highest and lowest hand and possibly some other type of prize. I’ve had a group from Phoenix planning on attending. You don’t need to fly in order to enjoy the day. In fact usually a pilot needs some assistance with a spotter or even an open type vechile to ride in. At the end of the 1st leg we will take a lunch break, so bring your favorite picnic lunch. No fire will be allowed. Also don’t forget the sun screen, hats, possible gogles if your a pilot. It is a blast and a very different aspect of R/C flying. No real fancy plane is needed in order to partispate. What works real well is a trainer. An extra fuel tank will be needed in order to prevent from landing midway to refuel. Once your in the air you don’t want to be looking for a place to land along the way. At the end starting point as well as the mid-way point a long strip of roadway is available for landing. You flying skills are tested somewhat so keep that in mind. If you want to travel with a group, then meet in the Sears parking lot on the side where the auto shop is located. They will leave promptly at 7:30. Everyone will meet at the turnout just past the lake and a pilots meeting will take place at 8:30. We can always use trucks, so even if you are not flying you could provide transportation for someone. Cont on page 2 Traveling to Chino Valley We are invited for a day of food and flying. Again this year we will exchanging a swap fun fly with the Chino Valley Club. The date is June 13th. We will meet at the Wal Mart parking lot and leave from there no later than 7:00 a.m. This is on a Sunday which should make it easier for more members to attend. We will be treated to a breakfast and lunch as well as a day visiting and flying with our neighbors who enjoy this hobby. Club members as well as their families are invited. I will need to know if you plan on attending and the number in your party before June 10th. You can let me (Durwood) know by calling or sending an email. My phone number is 526-3675, email at [email protected]. You can also let Bill Young know by calling him at the hobby shop at 526-8666. We will be returning the favor to the CVMA membership sometime in middle of August. More Long fly Playing cards will be given out to teams as follows. 1 card for showing up. 1 card for taking off. 1 card for landing for lunch. 1 card for taking off for the return trip. 1 card for landing at the end. Prizes will be given to the team with the highest and lowest hands. For more information or questions call Rick Magnan at 526-0039. This weakens glue joints to the point where an aircraft could fall apart in midair. Try using CyA kicker (catalyst). You just have to spray it on and wipe it off. It pulls the oil right out of the wood. Several treatments may be necessary. This also works if a fuel tank develops a leak, and the fuselage gets soaked with fuel. from Evergreen Flyer Evergreen Radio Modelers Association Tim Shea, editor Marysville WA Balancing a new airplane Here’s a neat idea for balancing your new airplane in “all directions at once.” A model airplane has one point of balance where the wing’s center of gravity (CG) and the fuselage centerline intersect. That’s where the secret lies, and here is how you can use that point to get a perfect balance for your new airplane. When you build the wing, install a light plywood block at this intersection (your plans will show the recommended CG). For a high-wing model, the block should be installed on the top of the wing. On a low-wing model, the block should be installed on the bottom of the wing. Mark the center of the CG on the block and leave the wing uncovered so any unnecessary weight can be added for lateral balance. When you are ready to balance, install a small screw eye into the block and hang the assembled airplane from the eye bolt. Fasten sufficient (use as little as possible) weight to the main spar of the wing to achieve lateral balance. Now, move the battery, receiver, or weight as required to attain proper balance, from front to back. This simple system will result in an accurately balanced model. from The Cam Journal Central Arizona Modelers Inc. Marvin Hinton, editor Sedona AZ Landing gear If your wire landing gear has lost its spring and seems to have gotten weaker, place it on a cookie sheet and heat it in the oven at 450° for one hour. Turn off the oven after an hour but do not remove the gear until it cools. Don’t try to speed up the process and remove it too soon! This heating/cooling process re-tempers the wire and should put new life into it. Don’t be concerned about solder joints on the gear. By Durwood Cline, President I have covered most of what I needed to say in other parts of the newsletter, but maybe I can come up with some other stuff to fill the page. Another ‘Good Luck and Our Condolences’ to Jerry Clark. It was learned at the last meeting that Jerry’s mom had passed away. At the same meeting Jerry was in attendance to let everyone know that he was on his way to Iowa. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors, including a happy retirement. “Hohaw” Jerry. Beat The Heat Is only a couple of months away. Things will start getting crazy soon. Tickets have been printed up for the raffle prizes and every member should sell at least one book. The price is $1.00 each or 6 tickets for $5.00. Flyers will me mailed to clubs and hobby shop’s this month. I expect the forest service to once again close the forest due to dry conditions. We just have to hope and pray for a big monsoon. July 4th Parade We have submitted our application to enter the 4th of July parade again this year. All members are encouraged to walk in the parade along with family members. All members are asked to were something patriotic and club oriented. If you have some type of plane to display on the float bring it. Once we get our location in the parade we will pass it along to everyone. Soaring has been great lately with all the wind we have been having. The best places are the overlook at Mormon Lake and Sheba Crater. I prefer the outlook because it has a better up draft of wind with the steep cliff. Also it has the ability to sit back from the wall and get out of the wind. At Sheba besides having a steep drive to the ledge the wind is brutal blowing in your face. I did not make the Zagie day at the overlook but I understand that everyone sure had a good time. Mike Bailey had his “Mother” ship flying. Some were not successful and ended up in some trees. I’m sure the winds will continue for awhile so get out and enjoy the wind by flying. By the way those new Wing Warriors are great flying slope planes. If you are in the market or planning on getting a slope soaring plane these come highly recommended. Bill Young Hobby is selling them but they are leaving the store as fast as he can get them in. For some pictures of the Zagie day go to our web site; www.flagstaffflyers.com. Please support the club come to the meetings and events. Till next time - Be Safe Durwood Robert Gillette - FredTretta -Tom Walton - Bill Young Welcome Aboard... Our newest member is Derrell Fennell The July 2 meeting is being moved up a week in order to get ready for the parade on July 4. A meeting and float building party will take place on June 30 at Curt Johnston’s home. Pizza’s and soda’s will be served. We need to get our float in shape for the parade. Starting time is 6:00 PM. Curt’s address is: 4148 E. Brokenrock Loop To get there, take Soliere off of Country Club and go west to Elk Run. Go down Elk Run to Brokenrock. The float will be in the parked at the house. e had a great turn out for our pancake breakfast - field W day. Thanks to those members who showed up to make things better for us all. I’ll list those who attended at the end of the article. We were able to accomplish several things. The shed was repainted along with the outhouse. The entrance gate was finished up by painting the ‘H’ supports. Robert Hood brought out the tables which were assembled, set in concrete, and painted. The impound board was painted and some repair work was done on the plane tables. Food was prepared by Jack Gray and Durwood Cline. Although a lot was accomplished, we must do some other items before our beat the heat in July. When we painted the tables something went awry and the paint bubbled. So it looks like they will need to be scraped back down and repainted. Some of the work tables will need to be repaired and the BBQ needs a paint job. Speaking of the BBQ. I’m asking that members donate a can of high temperature black paint and bring it out to the field, or to the meeting. If at least half of the members bring a can we can save the club some coin and get the job done. We have a new awing! At the last meeting the votes were counted and the consensus of those voting was to purchase a 10x20 awning. Phil Arnold has already purchased it and now we must get our plans out on how to secure the framing to keep our local thief at bay. Once we get the item together we can get out an put the framing up. I have talked with Gary Valentine who has agreed to bring out his welder for us. Here is a list of members that attended along with a group picture. Thanks Guys! 25% RatsReups (SuperStar). I just aquired this plane in a trade. It has a fresh Zenoah G62, and all the servos you need to get in the air. I will get this plane flyable so you can test fly before you buy! It is the perfect airplane for someone who wants to get into 1/4 scale real cheap. $450. See a picture on the flagstaffflyers.com website. Hangar 9 Cap 232 (120). This is my first 1/4 scale airplane. It flew OK with a Saito 150 4 stroke. Right now it does not have an engine or servos installed. The firewall has been upgraded, I pruchased a new cowl and the wing has been strengthned so this airplane has all of the bad things fixed. A OS 160 would be the perfect engine for this plane. If you want to get a 1/4 scale airplane that can do all of the tricks (or not) this is it. At $150, it is affordable. D-800 16' Glider - This scale glider I have owned for a while. It has several JR servos installed and obviously has been flown and lightly crashed. However, it would be easy for someone to finish and fly. With the exception of the canopy, everything is there and in good shape. This would be a great project for someone with an interest in gliders. $300.00 with some servos. 20% Extra 300 - This is an airplane that I just finished. It has a Saito 150 4C, all servos and is finished and ready to fly. It has a 68.5 inch wingspan (foam wings) and a painted fiberglass fuselage. The servos are digital. It is built real straight and has been test flown. At $500 it is a perfect setup for someone who wants to get a bigger plane without going 1/4 scale. These items can be viewed on the web site www.flagstaffflyers.com and are for sale by Phil Arnold 779-3602. Have any item to sell??? Send them to me and they can be listed on the web site by contacting Dawson Henderson at [email protected] The following members showed up to help... The Long fly is coming up on June 6th Durwood said Chairman, Rick Magnan would update us at the next meeting. Dawson has added some new things to improve the website and has asked for permission to spend another $ 1.00 per month to improve our site for future needs, this motion passed. Damien said the club trainer is coming along and just needs covering. Dawson looked up some information concerning insurance requirements for training pilots and gave this to Damien. Durwood gave a BTH report and said we have almost run out of raffle tickets, we need to print some more. Phil is taking some BTH flyers to the May fly to hand out. Prizes for BTH will be as follows; Pilots prize- Hitec Radio 1st prize- 4 Star airplane with LA .46 engine. 2nd prize- Flight simulator. 3rd prize- Futaba Radio. 4th prize- Field box. 5th prize- Starter Motor. Jerry Clark has moved early to Iowa and the club agreed to have a plaque made to thank him for all the work he has done for the club. Old business- Durwood reported the vote on the awning purchase was in favor of buying the 10’ x 20’ size and another vote was taken at tonight’s meeting to see which one to buy, Pep Boy’s for $ 69.00 with small pipe supports or Sam’s Club with larger pipe support’s, Sam’s club won. Curt and Phil have been appointed to purchase this when they are back in stock. The field cleanup was a success everything looks really nice, thank’s to all who helped. The out house needs servicing, Roger agreed to call Sandoval’s and be available on a Wednesday morning to do this. Durwood and Roger have been working on the prairie dog holes at the field. A reminder that May 16th is Zagi day at Mormon Lake overlook at about 8:00, directions are on the Flagstaff Flyers website. A Chairman is still needed for the float fly in September, Roger volunteered for the Soaring in the Pines Chairman spot. Door prizes drawing went to Janik Knittle and John Livingston. New business- Chino Valley has invited us again this year to their field for flying and a free lunch on June 13th, they would like a head count so they can buy the supplies, we could return favor in August. Nominations for Vice President and Secretary were held and Bill Young was nominated for VP again and Robert Hood was nominated for Secretary, both accepted. The vote will be at the June 2nd meeting with the positions effective July 1st. Dawson mentioned when we become incorporated with a 5013c, if we keep track of our time spent volunteering for the club we can show this to prospective donors and on our website. Show-N- Tell- Bejorn showed a trainer he has for sale and John Livingston showed his new Skylark ARF. Drawing winners- Bob Parson’s, Roger Jacobson, and Robert Hood. Meeting adjourned at 7:49 pm.
