FOURTH GRADE
FIFTH GRADE
Welcome Fourth Grade Parents
5th grade has had an amazing start. Mrs. Hopkins, Mrs. Naranjo and Mrs. Russ are an amazing team. Together we are working on establishing a positive learning environment. We are incorporating the 7 Effective Habits of a Leader to ensure that all students are proactive throughout their journey. Students are learning to be responsible, make goals, work hard, think positively and be a team player. Fourth Grade is off to a great start! The mission of the fourth grade team is to view students as unique individuals. It is also our mission to provide many opportunities for our students to meet their learning goals and to provide work, which will promote academic growth. The teachers and students are having fun learning Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. In reading, students are learning about different genres within >iction and non>iction. The students are identifying the main ideas and themes of various texts. To demonstrate writing skills, students are learning how to respond to stories and articles and identifying evidence directly from the text to justify their responses. Students are also working hard to improve their vocabulary. For math, fourth grade is learning place value, multiplication and division. To help students at home, please encourage students to read, and answer why and how questions. This will improve their critical thinking skills. You can also help your children identify math and science in the real world by pointing out various things in the community. Please ensure students complete their homework, come to school prepared, and encourage appropriate behaviors in school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Fourth Grade team. We have been using our weekly fruit and vegetable program to create Thinking Maps that lead towards opinion writing. In Math, we are learning how to multiply and divide decimals and are working very hard on independent learning centers. In Science we are reviewing The Scienti>ic Method and the learning about the water cycle. We are here to make sure that your child is College and Career Ready. If you have any concerns, please reach out to us so that we can set up a conference to discuss your child’s learning needs. News Around North Side

CURRICULUM CORNER
From Our Reading Coach
Welcome to the 2015 -‐2016 school year. We are off to a busy and productive school year, but would like to keep you informed. As a school-‐wide initiative we are implementing Thinking Maps. What are Thinking Maps? A language of eight visual patterns each based on a fundamental thinking process; based on 8 cognitive skills; applied in all content areas; used by all teachers; increase student achievement. Thinking Maps provide a common visual language in our classrooms and whole school. The eight Thinking Maps: 1. Circle Map; 2. Bubble Map; 3. Double Bubble Map; 4. Tree Map; 5. Brace Map; 6. Flow Map; 7. Multi-‐Flow Map; and 8. Bridge Map. The Thinking Maps language for learning is effective as shown in three areas of research: cognitive science, effective instructional practice, and brain research. The use of Thinking Maps across whole schools has brought about a wealth of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of these tools. Parents, now is the time that we must go beyond helping our students graphically organize information, our students must become independent critical thinkers, our students using Thinking Maps learn what thinking looks like. Parents, you will see your child's Thinking Maps when you come to our Open House on Sept. 9th, at 6:00pm. "You are your child's >irst teacher".
Ms. Young, Literacy Coach
From Our Math Coach
What’s new with Mathematics at North Side? This year at North Side we have added Re>lex Math to our curriculum. Re>lex helps students of all ability levels with their basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division. Re>lex monitors each student’s
performance to create the optimal experience for every student. Students can use Re>lex Math anywhere there is
an internet connection. Our students will make great gains with Re>lex Math.
Students in grade two, three, four, and >ive will be using Re>lex Math as part of
their curriculum. Our goal is to have
our students achieve automaticity with their basic math facts so they recall their basic math facts quickly and effortlessly.

CURRICULUM CORNER
From Our Science Coach
North Side cares to be the BEST in science! The teachers have been working diligently in order to make sure that all the students in grades 3-‐5 are given a baseline assessment to pinpoint the areas of de>iciencies that our students might be facing in science. With the assessment results collected, the teachers will be working collaboratively with the science coach to plan effective and engaging lessons to target all the science standards. Additionally, we have implemented a science lab where all the grade levels will be involved in hands-‐on activities with a science teacher to make real-‐world connections with the science topics that are being taught in the classrooms. We are looking forward to an exciting year in science where our students are empowered to maximize their scienti>ic knowledge!

CHESS CLUB
This year at North Side, we have started a chess club
that meets after school every Wednesday, from 3:00 4:00 p.m. Chess is a board game that requires its two
players to make moves against each other in hopes of
capturing their opponent's king. It is a game of strategy
that develops memory and concentration. In order to
play chess successfully players need to attack their
opponent’s pieces and eliminate them. Chess is a lot of
problem solving. Your mind is constantly scanning the
board and piecing together possible solutions. Chess
challenges you to explore new combinations and
anticipate the result. Often people play chess and do
not realize their developing their math skills. Chess is
about thinking logically.
