RIVERFORD CASE STUDY
Project Name: Riverford Recipe Box; Client: Riverford
Client Brief: Riverford, the Devon based enterprise which delivers organic vegetables and meat direct to UK
homes, has launched a brand new Recipe Box. The Box contains all the ingredients to create three dinners for
either two or four, with the emphasis on fresh, organic and seasonal ingredients.
Riverford are confident that the recipe boxes are the next major trend in home-cooking, offering a 100%
organic, no fuss, no waste, meal preparation kit for busy consumers who want to whip up a gourmet meal
quickly and easily.
Atlas’s Response: Atlas, who already manufactures Riverford’s vegetable boxes, was delighted to respond to a
brief for a design to accommodate the new concept.
The Atlas team, who pride themselves on a holistic approach to packaging, set about the complex challenge
taking into account a number of key considerations.
The design was required to: Reflect Riverford’s core brand values – quality, organic & environmentally conscious
 Accommodate a wide variety of sizes, shapes and weights
 Divide flexibly into compartments to protect the ingredients and prevent cross- contamination of
fresh ingredients
 Be compatible with Riverford’s supply chain, on the production line and in terms of palletisation.
 Be user-friendly, reflecting the core ethos of the concept.
 Protect the ingredients (which include fresh vegetables and delicate herbs)
Outcome: The solution conceived by Atlas’ skilled structural engineering team was a crash lock box that could
be assembled in less than a second on Riverford’s busy production line. A sturdy grade of recyclable
corrugated board was selected for the task. Sample cases were extensively transit tested with varying weights
to ensure capability. A grooved inner container and multi-adjustable dividers means that the box can be
sectioned off flexibly and according to the size of the ingredients. Finally, the finished product integrates
successfully with Riverford’s existing supply chain.
